T he escrow has expired.
Our lawyers have assured us that the sale process will proceed automatically from hereon. They’re already drawing up the papers in accordance with the original tenancy agreement, and come New Year’s Day, they’ll arrange for a meeting with Orson St. James to get the property deed and any other additional documentation needed.
My heart is filled with joy for Cora and her sister. The two are currently at the bakery, celebrating in their own way, and we will see Cora later on for dinner.
Dario is busy folding gold-edged napkins, gently stuffing them into brass napkin holders, while Waylan places plates and glasses around the table. Riggs is in charge of the cutlery and the drinks while I get the food ready. Cora was expecting to cook, but we decided to surprise her with a meal so she can just relax and enjoy.
Better yet, Eva called this morning and asked if she could take Dario for the night. We were hesitant to let the little guy go on Christmas Day, but we talked it over with him and he was so excited to spend time with Eva’s girls we decided to let him. He couldn’t wait to tell them what Santa had brought him.
Ten minutes later, Eva pulls up, and I walk Dario out to the car with his overnight bag.
“Are you sure about this?” I ask her.
“Absolutely. You and Cora deserve a night to relax,” she says with a smile I can’t quite read. Maybe she knows more than I thought.
“Well, thank you for this.”
“The girls love spending time with Dario, and since Carl is still out of state with that new construction gig until New Year’s Eve, we’re glad for the company,” Eva says.
“And he loves spending time with you, too. I really appreciate it.”
“You’ve done so much for our family,” she replies with a warm smile. “It’s literally the least I could do.” She pauses and gives Dario a playful wink. “Besides, we’ve got a scrumptious Christmas dinner planned. How do you feel about gingerbread, buddy?”
“I love it!” Dario exclaims, throwing his little fists up in the air.
Eva laughs. “That’s the spirit. The girls and I spent most of yesterday baking. I didn’t know what else to do to make the time pass until midnight.”
“But it passed. You’re in the clear now.”
“And so are you,” she replies, and gets back behind the wheel of her minivan while I place Dario’s go-bag in the backseat next to him. “I’ll bring him back around noon, right?”
“Yes, ma’am. Thanks again. A thousand thanks!” I kiss Dario’s forehead and close the door, then pull back and watch Eva drive off before heading inside, my heart beating faster than usual.
Riggs greets me with a double scotch on the rocks. “Just got a text from Cora. She’ll be here in five. You need this. Drink up and take the edge off.”
