Chapter 20

If a fat man puts you in a bag at night, don’t worry. I told Santa I want you for Christmas.

Sitting at Theo and Elliana’s kitchen countertop, Dante looked over the spread of information on Linda True. She was a mom of three kids ages eleven, twelve and thirteen. Stairsteps.

She’d gone into business with a friend a few years ago selling refurbished or thrifted items worth way more than they’d found them for, and they’d turned their idea into a multimillion-dollar business. Her husband had quit his job and did small contract work at home, mostly IT stuff. But he was the one who hauled the kids around everywhere, took them to their doctors’ appointments and such. He drove a hybrid SUV and she drove a little car.

The Cadillac had belonged to her dad, and according to the records Elliana had found, she kept it in a storage locker off Brickell. So she’d been careful not to use something that obviously belonged to them, but likely hadn’t counted on anyone following the guy she’d hired.

“She must think Aileen is having an affair with her husband, but why would she want her phone? She’d want her husband’s phone,” Dante murmured as he pulled up another tab. This one was simply of the woman’s phone records so he turned away from the laptop.

“Maybe…ugh, I don’t know.” And Elliana looked pissed about it .

Since it was late and Aileen was having a movie night with Nessa, they’d opted not to include her in this. No sense in ruining her night with her daughter when Dante, Elliana and Theo could handle looking over information.

And at least they finally had a name to go with this nonsense.

“Have you found any connections between the True woman and the gang member who reached out to Adam Jackson?” The first Santa.

“Not yet, but she—or her company—has done a lot of business so there could be any number of connections there. And her business partner is from the same neighborhood-ish as the guy who hired Jackson. Not saying that’s a connection, but it’s not nothing. I’m going to work on this angle tonight.”

“I can help,” Dante said. Aileen and Nessa would be asleep now and he didn’t want to go home just yet. She hadn’t asked him to stay over, but had promised to set her alarm. Her promise to do that had made it clear that he wasn’t invited over to her place.

Which cut deep, but he’d brought it on himself. She needed space and he could appreciate that. Sort of.

Okay, not at all.

He wanted to be in her bed holding her, keeping her safe and happy and…ugh. It was going to be a long, stupid night.

Pulling out his phone, he texted Sarah, who was sitting on the Trues’ house. Linda True must have ditched the phone somewhere too because it had gone offline not long after she’d tossed the purse. She’d gotten what she wanted so hopefully this was the end of whatever was going on.

But they weren’t taking any chances. Any changes? he texted.

Nope.

That was about as much as he was going to get from Sarah so he set his phone down and sighed. Tomorrow morning, he was going over to Aileen’s place and apologizing in person. Then he was going to give her so many orgasms that she would just have to forgive him.
