CHAPTER 4
DELANEY
D elaney woke slowly, luxuriously. Early fall sunlight streamed through her window, warming her bed, and she felt wonderfully relaxed. As she woke, memories from the night before returned to her. She and Logan had slept together. It had been wonderful — more than wonderful. Maybe, despite their differences, there was a chance of something between them. Perhaps not a serious relationship, but at least something casual. Delaney felt her lips tug into a smile.
With a yawn, she opened her eyes fully and sat up. She was alone in bed. She felt a moment of worry. Logan wouldn’t have left without saying goodbye, would he? But then she saw him emerging from the bathroom, dressed again in his slacks and button-down. His hair had been neatly combed and he looked refreshed. Once again, he could have stepped off a poster or out of a fashion magazine.
“Good morning.” Delaney rolled out of bed and pulled on her robe. Logan had seen her completely bare last night, but in the bright light of the sun, she wanted to have something on. “How did you sleep?”
“Well.” Logan reached for his belt, which was on the floor, and threaded it through the loops on his slacks.
“I can make breakfast. I’m not sure what I have, but there’s definitely coffee.”
“Thanks, but I have to run. I’m already going to be late for a meeting.”
“On Saturday?” Delaney wrinkled her nose.
“Unfortunately so. Ordinal requires a lot of work.” Logan seemed strangely distant this morning. Delaney crossed her arms protectively over her stomach.
“I get that. How about some coffee for the road?”
“No, thanks.” Logan was already by the door. He slid his feet into his shoes. Delaney felt a rush of worry — was he really just going to leave? With barely more than a word to her?
“Well, will I see you later?” she blurted. Logan turned slowly, one shoe still in his hand.
“Delaney.” He smiled, but it wasn’t the playful grin of the night before. “We spent an enjoyable night together, but I don’t see this turning into anything. A one-night stand is all I imagined we’d have — I’m just too busy for anything else. I think you are, too. There’s just no future here.”
“Oh.” Delaney felt like the air had been knocked out of her. She hadn’t expected that they were going to become a couple, but she’d at least hoped that they’d make plans to see each other again. After all, they’d just spent an amazing evening and night together — or at least she thought they had.
“I really do need to go.” Logan bent down and slid his other shoe on. “Have a nice day.”
And with that, he was gone. Delaney stood in the middle of her studio, reeling. Had he really just wished her a nice day, like they’d just had a business meeting instead of spent a passionate night together? For a few minutes, she didn’t move. Part of her expected that Logan would come back through the door with his grin and an offer to grab lunch later.
But when there was no knock at the door, Delaney knew it was time to face facts. Logan was just like all the other rich jerks she knew, who felt like they could take anything they wanted with no regard for the consequences. Everything Logan had said the night before had probably been a lie. At the very least, he was done telling her how beautiful she was.
Delaney’s hands balled into fists. It wasn’t right for him to walk out on her like that, before they’d even had a chance to talk.
There was nothing she could do about it, though. She’d made a mistake by throwing caution to the wind the night before. She should have just sent Logan home outside her building.
Although the night they’d spent together… well, it was hard to regret that. It really had been amazing, which was part of why it hurt so much that Logan had walked away like he had.
Delaney wandered into her kitchen and began making a cup of coffee. Yes, Logan was handsome and good in bed, but he was also a jerk, and she wasn’t going to waste another second being sad or upset about what he’d done. Maybe she’d just give him some bad art advice if he ever turned up at another gallery opening. Delaney grinned at the idea of the minor piece of revenge. At least it was something.
She took a shower and got ready for her day. She had a lunch meeting with an important client to discuss how to curate her personal collection better, and Delaney needed to be prepared. She didn’t have any time to moon over Logan.
He’d probably already forgotten about her, anyway.
