CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN
Laura walked into the jailhouse visitation room with Captain Irby and Dominick behind her. She looked at Deanna and felt sorry for the woman. She was about to turn that woman’s world upside down.
“Deanna Placid, I’m here to inform you that your son, Cyrus, is dead,” Laura firmly told the woman.
When Deanna just looked at her and shrugged, she looked over at Dominick in confusion. She could see he mirrored the same look toward her.
“Are you fucking kidding me right now? I tell you your son is dead and you just shrug? That man worshipped the ground you fucking walked on!” Laura shouted at the woman in anger.
“He was one of several children I gave birth to. He wasn’t the one I wanted to keep. I had to give up the daughter I wanted because David ordered me to keep him. Keeping him didn’t get me status, desired, or saved. He’s gone now, so David will leave me alone. Not like he gave two shits about the boy.” Deanna shrugged, looking away from Laura.
“You and Kathy are so much alike, it’s hilarious.”
Laura got up and started to leave the room until Deanna called her name. Turning around, she glared at the woman at the table.
“David was always a competition between me and your mother. Neither of us really wanted him. Yet, we both got stuck with him. He’s made our lives a living hell. Now, I’m free of him.” Deanna started laughing, smacking the table a few times before the laughter turned into tears.
“I feel sorry for you. The fact that a man was a competition for you that you blame him for the hell he put you through. He only gave you the karma you two gave him. You do realize that now that Cyrus is dead, your usefulness will end for him. If you make it to trial alive, you’ll be lucky!”
Laura didn’t even wait for a response. She left the visitation room without a glance back. What the hell kind of organization did David truly run? She could only hope they found him and Maria soon and were able to dismantle that man’s empire completely.
Once Laura completed her report, she turned it in to the captain and left. The kids were coming home today, and she had taken the rest of the week off so that she could spend time with the kids and be there for Highlander as he recovered from the gunshot wounds he received from Cyrus.
When she pulled into her driveway, her grandmother’s large black SUV was at the curb. Looks like the gang was already home.
She walked into her home and was greeted by the kid’s yelling “Momma” and rushing toward her. This was heaven to her.
She hugged her kids and gave them kisses and laughed as they all started talking at the same time about their visit with their great-grandmother. She looked over at the woman in question who smiled at her as she tapped her cane on the floor to get everyone’s attention.
“Children, let your mother into the house. You will have plenty of time until you’re grown and out of the house to tell her about our visit,” Jeannette shooed the children.
“Yes ma’am!” all three children said in union.
Laura walked into the house and saw her husband lying on the couch as ordered with a sleeping Aurora laying on his chest. She looked at him with a quirked eyebrow which he returned daring her to say something.
Laura couldn’t help but smile and give a silent thanks to the big man upstairs. Her family was home. Her family was whole. To her, that’s all she needed.
“What’s next on your agenda, dear?” Jeannette watched Laura sit next to her husband and play with his hair.
“Vacation, Grandma. I think it’s time we took a friend of ours up on his offer to come to Montana for a few days. Captain has ordered the team to take a week off,” Laura said as she looked down at Highlander to see his reaction.
“Sounds good to me, lass. Would be nice to get out of California for a few days.”
“Montana it is then.”
“What will be the plan when you come back?” Jeannette asked, looking between the husband-and-wife duo.
“House hunting. After everything that has happened, I think it’s time we found a new place. One that doesn’t have all the nightmares of the past. The kids deserve a home that they can truly feel safe in,” Laura decided as she looked down at Highlander who smiled up at her, nodding his agreement.
“We can start searching when we get back from Montana,” Highlander agreed, kissing Laura’s hand that had been holding one of his.
