Chapter 14
Jake
“ A lmost there…”
“I’m afraid I’m going to fall!”
“I’ve got you, don’t worry, I’ve got you,” I reassure Caroline as I guide her into the barn with my hands over her eyes. “Okay, open!”
As soon as I draw my hands away, Caroline’s head juts up like a calf who has just been born, looking up to the sky. Her mouth falls open at the sight of the barn. “Jake, this is beautiful.”
I smile. “It is, isn’t it?” I walk past her to the table and chairs set up at the center of the barn. “Although, I have to admit, I had some help.”
A lot of help. All my brothers pitched in to make the unused barn some picturesque moment out of a fairytale. Brody and Coop hung the lights and Sean sourced all the flowers. Eddie was in charge of sweeping the floor, which he could still use some work on, but at least it’s not as dusty in here as it once was. And, of course, Mom helped too, cooking us the mouthwatering meal.
“It’s like a little piece of heaven,” Caroline says as she steps forward into the cascade of light.
You’re like a little piece of heaven , I want to say, but that’s corny even for me. It’s not far off from the truth, though. For our first official date, Caroline has on a burgundy red dress with buttons all up the front. It hugs her curves perfectly. Matched with her simple makeup and big blonde curls, I think I could die happy in this moment.
I pull out her chair. “You want to take a seat?”
She smiles through closed lips. I’ve already snagged multiple kisses from her, so delectable I think I could survive on a steady diet of them, but dinner awaits.
“Thank you,” she murmurs as she settles into her seat.
I lift the cover off her plate to reveal the meal. “Dinner courtesy of Chef Lori Simmons. Every piece of the dish utilizes a different Simmons Sauce. I know, annoying, but –”
Caroline folds her hands up by her cheek. “Compliments to the chef.”
“You haven’t even tasted it yet,” I say with a chuckle as I take a seat across from her.
She laughs too. “If your mom made it, I know it’s going to be good.”
I beam with pride. “Um, I know it’s a little grandiose, but –” I pick up the bottle of Dom Perignon settled in the champagne bucket. “You know, special occasion.”
“Dom? You’re crazy.” Caroline holds up her empty champagne glass. “I love it.”
I smile and pour the fizzing bubbles into her glass. “You’re worth it. But of course, you don’t need me to tell you that.”
“No, I do. It’s nice to hear you say it, Jacob.”
I blush.
“Jacob Leslie.”
“Okay, you are bad.”
Caroline leans back with laughter.
Dinner is easy. We’ve done this before, just not quite like this. On a date, just us, under the manufactured starlight of the barn. Our voices echo off the walls as we chat about anything and everything. Conversation flows as freely as a river and I can’t help but feel like all of this was somehow inevitable.
“It was nice to… meet your family,” I say toward the end of the meal. “I’m sorry I showed up out of the blue like that, but –”
“They liked you. Very much,” Caroline says with a firm nod.
I raise an eyebrow. “I got the feeling your grandmother might have thought I was a little bit of a country bumpkin.”
“You were talking about goats and had hay stuck to the bottom of your boot.”
“What?!”
“Kidding! Well, not the goats part, but –”
I clutch my heart. “You scared me half to death.”
Caroline’s hand shoots out across the table for mine. As soon as she takes it, I’m at a loss for words and thoughts. She is the only thing that exists and her touch is something I never want to lose. “Teasing you. I like to tease you.”
Her thumb slides over my knuckles tenderly. I watch her watching her thumb, the way she considers the touch with curiosity.
“Gram is an opinionated woman,” Caroline says.
“I can tell.”
She pauses. “Her opinions don’t matter to me outside of business, though. I want you to know that.”
It’s not the ideal thing I want to hear. Getting approval from her family is everything to me. At least when it’s at that point. I shouldn’t be rushing things. It’s hard not to though when things feel so perfect.
“I appreciate you coming all the way out here tonight,” I say, changing the subject.
“My pleasure. It’s not often a gal gets a whole barn to herself.”
I laugh, but it peters out softly. “The least I could do for you, Caroline.”
Her pretty brown eyes blink, lashes fluttering.
“I hope it’s not presumptuous, but…”
“Yes…?” her voice lilts in a way that causes blood to rush to my crotch.
“Well, those country roads are dangerous at night,” I say, harkening back to our first night together, the one when everything changed. “And I’d hate to send you into a dangerous situation when you could stay here instead.”
Caroline tilts her head to the side, a sly smile on her lips.
“You wouldn’t have to spend it with me if you didn’t want to,” I backtrack. “My house is, well, it’s got a few bedrooms, I don’t –”
“Jacob Leslie?”
I stop, bite my lip, laughing. “I hate when you call me that.” Hate how much I love it.
Caroline leans across the table and gingerly kisses my cheek. “I would love to spend the night with you.”
Dad’s idea for me to convert the old hayloft into a house was a good one. On my eighteenth birthday, we started on the project. It took several years, but man was I grateful for it. Didn’t have to keep sneaking girls up to my room where the floor creaked and the bedframe rocked.
Now, my house is a quarter mile away from my brothers and mother and I don’t have to worry about anyone hearing what antics I might be up to.
First things first, I give Caroline a tour which ends right back into the main room with big windows where the doors used to be, all the way to the ceiling, sending in light from the silvery moon.
I throw on some music on my old record player, my vinyl collection one of my proudest possessions, and then swing Caroline around the room in a dance. We trip over each other’s feet, laughing, swooning, and kissing, until we tumble back onto the couch, making out like kids in the backseat of a car.
I trap Caroline’s hair in my hand, working my mouth against hers as her hips wriggle against mine. But we’re in my home. Officially on a date.
We can go slower for once. I’m not in a rush to be inside. But I am in a rush to have her.
I pull my mouth away from hers. “Let me taste you.”
Caroline moves her hands up to her chest almost nervously. “Are you sure?”
“Of course, I’m sure,” I say with a half-smile. “Don’t tell me you’ve never had a guy do that for you?”
“No, they have I just…” Her eyes refuse to meet mine. “I just don’t think they’ve ever really liked it. They felt like they had to.”
“Oh, honey…” I say and kiss her softly. “Those fools aren’t men. They’re boys.”
Caroline sighs happily.
“I promise you…” I say, pressing a line of kisses down her neck. “I want nothing more than to have your sweet pussy in my mouth.”
“God, Jacob, what am I going to do with you?”
I laugh against her, continuing the line of kisses down her collarbone, releasing each button of her dress and pressing yet another kiss on her bare skin. “You don’t have to do anything, sugar,” I say against her belly, nuzzling the soft curve. “I’m going to do everything.”
I pull her underwear down, revealing all of her. I have half a mind to ask if I can keep her panties as a token to remember her by. Instead, I cast them aside and press a kiss to the inside of her thigh.
“Mm…” Caroline whimpers.
“I’m going to make you feel really good, alright?” I say. “This is all about you, Caroline.” Not entirely true. If she knew how hard I was right now, she’d realize I was doing this for myself just as much as her, but hey, I’m a gentleman and I have to feed into my image.
I kiss her lower lips softly at first. Then again, working my tongue in as if it was her mouth. The taste is incredible. Sweet, tangy, salty, all in one. My probing tongue then flicks at her clitoris which is starting to swell.
“Oh!” Caroline’s body jerks and then settles back down. “My God…”
I slide my arms under her legs, gripping her thighs so I can completely control the pressure. I take my time, teasing and taunting her, delighting every time her body tenses, every sigh and whimper that comes from her mouth until, finally, I’m languishing entirely on her clit, harder and harder until Caroline’s hips jerk up to my face, and she screams out in ecstasy.
“How did you… how did you do that?” she asks, her hand rummaging through my hair delicately.
“Never underestimate a man with a goal, I suppose,” I say with a throaty laugh. I rest my head on her hip, unwilling to leave my home between her legs so soon.
Caroline heaves a sigh. “Thank you.”
“Absolutely anytime.”
We lay like that for a while. Enjoying being close without rushing away from each other.
“I like you a lot, Jake,” Caroline says.
I lift my head and crawl up to meet her lips with mine. “I like you a lot, too.”
If it wasn’t rash, I’d ask her to be my girlfriend right here and now. But I just got her to agree to a date. I don’t want to rush things or scare her off.
Caroline caresses my cheek softly. “How can I take care of you now?”
“Oh, I don’t need anything. Just need to look into your brown eyes and… mercy.”
Caroline laughs.
“That’s all it takes. Really.”
“You’re a softy, Jake.”
I tuck my head onto her shoulder, holding onto her like a baby. “Maybe. Is that a bad thing?”
“No, not at all.”
“Good. Then let me tell you, Caroline Gladstone, I am soft on you. I am so damn soft on you and I don’t think I can stop.”
Caroline’s lips brush up against my forehead. “Then don’t.”
