Chapter 38
Charli
Oh my god!
The way Hunter worked my body was divine. His mouth did delicious things to me, licking and laving and nipping. Every time an orgasm crested, he backed off and let it subside, then dove in again.
By the fourth time, I was ready to take care of the issue myself. My hand crept toward my clit, and he swatted it away. “Please, Hunter! I can’t take it anymore!”
He looked up at me from between my legs, his chin shiny from my arousal. “You can and you will.”
I fell to my back and threw an arm over my eyes. It was sweet torture.
He stuck two fingers inside me, working them in and out, then added a third. My body stretched to accommodate the sweet intrusion. His fingertips tapped on that secret spot inside me only he’d been able to find and gave my clit a long, hard suck. My pussy clenched around his fingers, and everything tingled. I rode a razor-thin edge between pleasure and pain, heaven and hell, frustration and bliss .
Higher and higher I climbed, every muscle in my body coiled tight. With one last flick of his tongue, I exploded. A beautiful array of colors burst behind my eyelids, like confetti being shot from a cannon. My back arched and my hips lifted from the desk, my pussy pulsing. Wave after wave of euphoria flowed through my veins, little prickles of electricity zapping every neuron. My head thrashed back and forth, and a scream ripped from my throat.
Then Hunter was on top of me, filling me with his cock. “Please tell me you’re on birth control.”
“Yes, yes! Fuck me, please fuck me!” I couldn’t wait. I needed him now. Needed him to fill me up.
Hunter pounded into me furiously. I wrapped my legs around his waist and held on for dear life. It didn’t take long to feel him swell inside me and fill me with his warmth. Buried to the hilt inside me, he pushed my hair back and stared into my eyes. “Charli…”
“I know.” Maybe it was love, maybe it was lust. We didn’t need words to define it. We felt it. Saying it aloud would only complicate it.
I loved this feeling and wanted it to last for as long as he was willing to have me.
And maybe I was falling in love with him too.
The next night, snuggled into Hunter’s side with his arm wrapped around me, a distant wail filtered into the bedroom. Someone was either wet or hungry.
I scooted out from beneath Hunter’s arm and walked bleary-eyed to the nursery. Hunter and I worked again tonight and then he fucked me until my bones turned to Jell-O. I was exhausted but happy. Deliriously happy.
As I entered Carina’s room, her wails got louder. “It’s okay, baby girl.” I picked her up and cradled her to my chest, rocking her back and forth. She continued to cry, huge sobs and tears running down her cheeks .
I set her on the changing table and checked her diaper. Dry as a bone.
She had to be hungry. I warmed a bottle and tried to give it to her, but she kept pushing it away with her little hands.
I sat in the rocker and talked to her, hoping the motion and my voice would soothe her. “I don’t know what’s wrong with you, honey. Do you not feel good?” Maybe she had an upset tummy, and a good burp or fart would do the trick. I put her on my shoulder and patted her back. When that didn’t help, I got worried something else was wrong. I put my hand on her forehead. “Oh no!” She was way too hot. God, I was so stupid. I should have done that first.
Hurrying down the hallway with Carina in my arms, I shook Hunter awake. “Hunter, get up!”
He rolled over and looked at us through slitted eyelids. “What’s wrong?”
“Carina’s burning up. I think we need to take her to the hospital.”
He shot out of bed like someone lit him on fire. “Shit!” He quickly pulled on some sweatpants and a T-shirt. “Where are my keys and wallet?” he asked, patting his empty pockets.
Carina wailed again and rubbed her ears with her fists. “Hold her while I get dressed.”
Back in my room, I threw on the first thing I saw and slipped into my flip-flops. I didn’t really care what I looked like. Grabbing the diaper bag and my purse, I met Hunter back in the kitchen.
He already had Carina strapped in the carrier and was talking to her. “It’s alright, princess. Shhh. I know you don’t feel good but Daddy’s gonna get you all better.”
I sat in the back with Carina, trying to calm her, while Hunter drove. It was probably better for me that I wasn’t in the front. His careful driving ceased to exist as he barreled down the road at excessive speeds and made questionable stops. “Slow down, Hunter! It’s not going to be helpful if you get us in an accident.”
“I know, I know. It’s just that—”
“You’re worried. I get it, but please slow down. ”
If I thought Hunter was overprotective before, it paled in comparison to a daddy in distress. We pulled into the parking lot, and Hunter took Carina in while I parked the car. Of course, even in the middle of the night, the closest spot wasn’t close at all. My flip-flops flapped loudly as I speed-walked across the lot.
The emergency room was complete chaos. A group of about fifteen people took up half the waiting room, crying and hugging each other. A man in the corner threw up into a garbage can while his girlfriend rubbed his back. A bleary-eyed mom tried to wrangle her three children who decided they weren’t tired at all and played chase around the chairs. An elderly man with a cut on his head sat in the other corner, his wife continually dabbing it with a towel.
And in the center of it all was Hunter arguing with the receptionist. “I’m not sure you’re understanding me! My daughter has a fever. I need to see a doctor immediately.”
The woman waved her arm at the chaos. “So does every other patient here. We’ll call you when it’s your turn.”
“How long will that be?”
“As long as it takes.” She passed him a clipboard with forms to fill out.
“That’s completely unacceptable! She’s a baby!”
The receptionist sighed. “Mr. Dorsey, I understand your frustration, but yelling at me isn’t going to get you in any faster. We’re doing the best we can. We’re two doctors and a nurse short tonight. Please have a seat.”
“Come on, Papa Bear,” I said as I took Hunter by the arm and led him to some empty chairs, mouthing I’m sorry to the woman.
“This is bullshit! Can’t they see my daughter is sick? I’ll pay extra to get her in before these other people.”
“Careful, your entitlement is showing,” I said as I took Carina out of the carrier and rocked her in my arms. She was still fussing, but the sobs had stopped.
Hunter leveled me with a glare. “Do I look like I care? ”
“No, but you should. No one wants to be here in the middle of the night, yet everyone is here for a reason. Try to relax and fill out the paperwork.”
“Relax, my ass,” he grumped, scribbling furiously on the forms.
Three hours later, we walked out of the hospital with antibiotics and a much calmer baby. The culprit of Carina’s fussing: an ear infection.
Although Hunter’s protectiveness was over the top, there were no lengths he wouldn’t go to for his daughter and that was admirable. The way he defended me to Leonard proved I was under his protection too.
I hadn’t asked for it or expected it, but I liked it.
