Chapter Seven

NADINE

It’s one day until the wedding, and I’m beyond impatient to see Kayden.

That morning, I dress and slip out early to stop by a café that I’ve discovered with Melody. I like many things on this planet, but I love the freedom to walk safely. On Earth, aside from the brutal heat, there’s always the risk of walking alone and having some man looking for a mate try to kidnap you.

On Aphroditea, I feel safe and protected. I walk into the café, and a female orc, Trudy, smiles at me. She’s startlingly tall. “Hi!” she says when I stop at the counter.

“Good morning. What do you recommend today?” I ask.

Jane has set me up with a tab here, explaining that the royal family will take care of me until I find a job.

Trudy grins. “You like the bitter coffee, but I think you should try one of the sweet ones.”

“I’ll try it! Everything you suggest has been great.”

She quickly made me something that she called a froth latte, explaining the term came from Earth during an era when they made these. It’s sweet and light, and I love the flavor.

“You know, you could get a job here,” she says with a smile after she serves me.

“I could?”

“Yes. We have several open shifts because we’re expanding. I know you’re getting married, and that’s a big deal, but this would be something you could do once you’re settled. Maybe after your honeymoon, which I hear will be all kinds of fun,” she teases.

My cheeks get hot. “Do you know what an infinity pulse is?” I ask.

Trudy nods. “I’ve heard about it. Orcs don’t usually experience that, but it’s all the rage here. Do you feel it with your man?”

Heat blazes through me as I nod.

“Kayden is one of the royal bodyguards. You will be important here once you marry him,” she points out.

I can’t help my nervous laugh. “I’m still getting used to the whole royal thing. It was in the old news on Earth, but that’s it.”

Trudy rolls her eyes. “I’ve been to Earth. Kind of sucks for people there these days.” She shakes her head.

“Where else have you traveled?” I ask.

“Here, Earth, and my birth planet. That’s it. Some orcs travel more than others. I actually like it here. It’s kind of peaceful. Even though I’m not from this planet, it’s nice to be somewhere where women are revered. It’s a pretty cool place to live.”

“I have to admit I’m not used to it,” I reply.

She snorts, resting her hip on the counter. “Earth isn’t the only place that treats women like shit. Trust me on that.”

“Will you be at my wedding?” I ask.

“I got the invitation just the other day. Of course I’ll be there. You’re my new friend.” Her eyes twinkle.

I smile. “I’m glad you’ll be there.” I lift my cup to take another sip just as a cluster of customers enters the café. “I’ll see you there tomorrow. I understand I’ll be busy between now and then.”

Trudy waggles her brows. “You’ll be really busy for the week after.”

Her sly laughter follows me. With my cheeks burning up, I turn to leave. I’ve heard all about how Kayden and I will have our honeymoon in our own private home for an entire week immediately following the celebration after our wedding. I can’t wait.
