6 MONTHS LATER
“No peeking,” Hudson said.
“I’m not peeking!” I insisted. I continued shuffling forward, unable to walk properly from a mix of fear of running into something and having to stay close to Hudson because his hands were over my eyes. “I couldn’t peek even if I wanted to. But how much further are we going?”
“We’re almost there,” he promised.
As far as I knew, we were still on his property, which was making me wonder what on earth this surprise could be. Over the past few months of dating, I was pretty sure I’d seen every inch of the backyard (which was huge), so I had no idea what he’d done that could be surprising.
“Are you ready?” Hudson asked.
“I’ve been ready for five minutes.”
“Three, two…” He didn’t bother to say one as he took his hands off my eyes and let me take in the sight. I gasped in delight. The patio furniture was completely wrapped in twinkle lights, illuminating the night sky. In the middle of the circle of soft benches was an already lit bonfire. Hudson grabbed my hand and pulled me to one of the benches and picked up the blanket from it, wrapping it around my shoulders.
“Happy six-month anniversary,” he whispered.
“Happy six months,” I replied. I brushed a hand through his hair. “This is so sweet, Bay.”
“I thought you might like it.” He ran a thumb over my lip like he was considering kissing me but was holding back. “Tell me a secret.”
“I don’t hate your band anymore.”
Hudson rested his forehead against mine. “Is that your way of saying you love me?”
“I love you, average teen boy,” I murmured. “Your secret?”
“I love you too, average all-American girl.” He kissed me, soft and sweet. “And I can’t wait to write a thousand songs about you.”
