A week later
“Are you okay?” Rian asks me as she enters my room.
We buried Beckett yesterday and there is a part of me that has died. I’ve called to him to come see me. I’ve tried to summon him. I’ve done everything in my power to see him again, but he won’t answer.
No. I’m not okay. I no longer want to exist in a world where he doesn’t exist.
I stare out the window, unblinking, unmoving, and didn’t answer her.
“I brought you some water and food. You need to eat, Quinn. The coven doesn’t know what to do. They feel so terrible. They had no idea your twin flame was human. They had no idea there was an imposter in the Arcana Guild.”
I don’t say anything. They should have known. I don’t want their apologies or pity or guilt.
I only want Beckett.
“I’m going to sleep now. Tell everyone I’m fine.” After today, no one will have to worry about me again.
“Quinn—”
“—Please, Rian.” I try not to lose my temper. More tears shed, dripping down my cheeks. “—I need to be left alone.”
“Of course. I’m always here if you want to talk.”
“I know.”
She opens her mouth to say something and decides against it, giving me a slow nod before leaving. The door clicks shut and with a wave of my finger, I lock it.
I’m done living a life half-fulfilled.
I lie down on the bed, lift the covers to my chest, and close my eyes. I focus on the soft tick of the clock next to my bed, allowing it to lull me into stasis. It isn’t long before my soul is outside my body and I’m looking down at myself.
I’ve lost weight. My cheeks are sunken in, and I have dark circles around my eyes. Grief took a toll on me, but I’ll no longer live in sadness.
I think of the Far Away and open the door to my closet, taking a step inside. That’s what is so beautiful about astral projection. Every door in the mind leads to where you need it to.
My feet land on dark soil. The familiar tall trees surround me. Spinning around, the door remains there to be my way out.
“Beckett!” I scream for him, running through the unknown brush. “Beckett!” I call for my twin flame again.
The further from the door I travel, the more I risk not being able to find my way back.
That’s fine.
I don’t plan on going back.
“What did I tell you about coming here?”
I jump, holding a hand to my chest when I see a familiar face. “Lorcan.”
“Yes, Lorcan. And do you want to know what Lorcan is? Exhausted. People never listen to Lorcan. You are about to be locked out of your body. Is that what you want?”
“Yes,” I answer fast, without thinking.
His empty eyes widen in shock. “Well, welcome home. You’re looking for the new guy, right?” He checks out his nails before rubbing them on his cloak.
“Yes! Yes. Is he here?”
“Here? He is miserable. I’ll take you to him.” With a snap of a finger, we are near a cliff with a view of a reddish-black sky.
But sitting at the edge is the man I can’t live without.
“Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do,” Lorcan whispers before waving his fingers and disappearing.
Beckett’s shoulders tense, and he turns around, gasping when he sees me. His eyes are red and his cheeks are wet.
“Quinn?”
I sob when I see him, and we run to each other. He catches me, holds me tight, and swings me around in a circle.
“What are you doing here? You have to go back. You can’t be far from your body—”
I silence him with a kiss, my soul shifting and igniting with our flame again. “I don’t care about my body when you are not there to hold it. I am here. With you. Forever.”
“You found me this time, Stardust.” He smiles, giving me another kiss. “Are you sure?”
I can’t stop searching for his lips. Wanting to speak, but not wanting to waste another second. I want to touch him constantly. I hold his hand to my chest, finally feeling complete.
“In all the universes, in all the worlds and dimensions, my soul will always search for you. I’d rather live in death with you than live in life without you. I found you, Cosmic Rose. I will stop at nothing to be with you.”
His kiss is powerful and intense. I can taste the tears on his lips. Our tongues meet as if it is the first time we have found each other again.
“I can’t believe you astral projected to find me. You stubborn woman.”
“I can’t believe you didn’t answer my calls. This is what you get.”
He stares into my eyes, his thumb tracing my jaw. “It’s because I knew seeing you would destroy me, and I knew seeing me wouldn’t help you, not when nothing could be done.”
“I did the only thing I knew to do in order to be with you. I’ll do it all over again, Beckett.”
“I want to be angry at you for throwing away your life.”
I silence him with another kiss. “My life meant nothing after the moment your heart stopped beating. Now, my afterlife will give me everything I’ve ever wanted. Forever. With you. And that is something the world has never given us.”
He brings my hand to his mouth, kissing my knuckles before that crooked smile tilts those lips.
I love that smile.
Our bodies might be still, but our souls will live forever.
Together.
The End (for real).
