Chapter 18

Eighteen

SUNNY

I t's been two weeks. Two weeks of a pure hell of Nix giving me heated looks every time I meet his eyes. I’ve been taking care of him since he got home, well, as much as I could and only the basics. I help him with his bandages, make him food, and do anything I can to make myself feel useful. All the while, he watches me with a possessive look that I can't seem to shake. It sends a thrill down my spine every damn time, even if we haven't kissed or barely even touched since the last incident. I felt so guilty for days. I thought I hurt him again, and it nearly killed me. Even though Nix has reassured me a million times, I still feel guilty.

I finish making a sub-style sandwich for Nix and Paisley before cleaning up my mess and heading back out of the kitchen. I pass Izzy as she’s feeling her way down the hall.

“Hey, hun, do you need any help?” I ask, stopping beside her. Before shaking her head, she gives me a kind smile, one I rarely see leave her face.

“I just need to heat up a bottle for Jett. Hitter wanted to do it, but I wouldn’t let him. I swear he would keep me in a bubble if I let him,” she says, laughing softly. I smile back, not afraid to admit I’m just a bit jealous of Izzy and Hitter's love. Hell, Piper and Swift, too, and even a bit jealous of Halle and Loki on the milder days, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

I’ve gotten so close to these ladies over the past few weeks, and I know they deserve this love beyond a shadow of a doubt. After hearing their stories, I didn’t feel so alone. I felt connected to them somehow, and they have brought me into their fold one hundred percent.

“Alright, well, I’m taking Nix and Paisley some food. I'll see you around,” I tell her, starting to walk away. She stops me before I get too far.

“Hey, Sunny,” she says quietly.

“Yeah?” I ask, turning back to her.

“I hope you know what you mean to this club. We all love you and Paisley so much. Just…” she stops, and I wait for her to continue. She takes a deep breath before doing so. “I wish someone would have been able to convince me sooner that Hitter loved me and how much I meant to him. I didn’t feel like I deserved his love with everything my family put this club through, and sometimes I can feel you struggling with that as well.”

I swear, this woman may be blind, but she sees more than anyone I’ve ever met. Sometimes, I wonder if she is a witch. The good kind, of course.

“Nix is really into you. Please don’t hurt him because the demons from your past are telling you what you should and shouldn’t do. Those demons are there to put doubt in your mind, to make you feel worthless. It's their one job, and your job is to overcome them. Don’t let them get to you. Don’t let them take away your happiness. That’s what they fight to do, but you fight harder because this life is too short to spend it being controlled.”

After that, she turns and continues into the kitchen while I just stand here and stare at her retreating form. I half expected Izzy to warn me of hurting Nix, like Halle did. I should have realized Izzy has her own tactics. While Halle runs more toward violence, Izzy runs more toward love, and I take it to heart. I finally shake myself free and start making my way back to Nix’s room.

Does he really feel more for me than this attraction? I know for a fact I fell for him a while ago. Hell, probably the minute he eased my daughter's fears when we arrived. I’ve been holding back because I wasn’t sure what he wanted from me. He has said nothing, and hell, he pulls away from me at every damn turn. He’s been so hot and cold. One minute he’s all over me, and the next, it's like we’re just acquaintances again.

Then I think over Izzy’s words again. If he feels the same way I do, maybe there’s another reason he’s holding back. I walk down the remaining hall with a new determination in my blood. I’m going to get Nix to fuck me, and he’s going to let go of his control this time. It’s time, past time, and I’m going to make damn sure of it. I smile as I push his door open and see him messing with something on his computer, but he has Paisley set up right beside him at his desk, where she’s humming and coloring.

“You guys hungry?” I ask them. They both turn around at the same time, and I want to laugh at the matching expressions and movements, but I head over to the small table Nix has set up in the corner.

“This looks amazing, sunshine. Thank you,” Nix says, helping Paisley over to what has become her usual seat at the table, and I watch them dig in, barely coming up for a breath. I swear the similarities between the two are astounding. I want to laugh as they shovel the food down. Nix finally looks up and notices me watching.

“Where’s your food, Sunshine?” he asks.

“I ate a little bit ago. I’m fine, promise,” I say, smiling at him.

“What were you guys working on?” I ask them. Before Nix can answer, Paisley jumps up and runs to the desk. I look at Nix in confusion, but all I see is the evil smirk on his face, and I know he’s probably fucking with Jason. He already told me about sending a box of BDSM toys and purple dildos to his office. He subscribed to over a hundred random magazines in Jason’s name, from women's clothing lines to “Sexy enlarged Grandpas.” I wanted to scold him, but it's too funny. Plus, it feels good to know Jason’s life isn’t the perfectly put-together show he likes to portray. Paisley rushes back over and puts a picture on the table between us.

“I made this for you, Comp. I hope you like it,” Paisley says, setting the picture down. I look at it and see a grassy lawn with green hills. One lonely sunflower is sticking up out of the ground, and the bright yellow sun is shining down straight on top of it.

“Oh wildflower, you drew this? It's amazing!” Nix says, smiling brightly and picking up the piece of paper.

“It's me and mommy. It's for you, to make sure you never forget us when we have to leave. The flower is me cuz you call me wildflower, and because you call mommy sunshine, I had her shining down on me,” Paisley says. I watch Nix’s face soften before he looks her dead in the eyes.

“Baby girl, you and your mama ain’t going nowhere,” he tells her before turning to me, “Unless I’m riding shotgun.”

The look in his eyes is a challenge, daring me to argue. He thinks I’m going to fight and push him away. Oh, how wrong he is. I give him a flirty smirk and wink at him. I probably look like a complete idiot, but I couldn’t give two shits at the moment. I want him to know what to expect tonight because the minute Paisley is asleep for the night, I’m coming for him… hopefully in more ways than one.
