Chapter 18

Sasha

“ W hat am I doing?” I stared at my reflection in the mirror and I barely recognized myself. Like any woman who wanted to enhance her looks, I wore makeup regularly, but usually a bit of shimmery powder, mascara and lip gloss, just enough to look presentable in public. But today I had on eyeshadow, my brows were sculpted to within an inch of their lives and my lips were a gorgeous shade of pink. “I look like one of those yoga moms.”

I looked down at my outfit and frowned. Alex had asked me to meet him some place, which meant I had to leave the penthouse, and just outside were dozens of photographers. So I had to dress the part of a woman Alex would ask to marry him. The pale blue sundress had spaghetti straps which made my boobs look even bigger, but the fitted bodice highlighted by hourglass figure and the full skirt stopped at my knees, hiding my thighs. I looked nice, but too dressed up to care for a baby.

But caring for Dixie is my job, so I have to find a way.

“All right, I’m ready.” Henrietta appeared in the doorway with a smile and a sparkle in her eye. “Wow, you’re going to make Alex swallow his tongue in that dress. Maybe yours too,” she laughed.

“Doubtful,” I lied easily, shoving memories of his kisses deep down. “what are you ready for?”

“Alex asked me to look after Dixie while you and he took care of business .” She added an eyebrow wiggle that said she thought this outing was a ruse.

“What? Why?” The sole reason I was here was for Dixie, and now he was shoving my work onto poor Henrietta. “That’s not right.”

“It’s all right, Sasha. I don’t mind. In fact, I’m looking forward to it.” She smiled genuinely and my shoulders relaxed. “I’m positive.”

“Okay, if you’re sure.”

“I am, and you look too fine to waste that dress on me and Dixie.” She laughed and shook her head before she shooed me out of my bedroom. “Go on and have fun.”

I wasn’t sure about the fun part, but Alex had asked me to meet him so I grabbed my bag and headed down to the lobby, a pit of anxiety in my belly. I knew what was waiting for me out there and as the elevator doors slid open, I prepared myself for the onslaught.

“You can’t go this way, Miss Sasha.” Barry’s brows knitted together in confusion. “Your driver, Ben, is waiting in the garage for you.”

It was my turn to frown in confusion. “I don’t have a driver.”

He smiled. “You do now.” The gleam in his eyes should have made me feel better, but it didn’t.

“I don’t need a driver,” I told the man I assumed was Ben when the elevator doors opened again.

“Excellent since I’m not a driver. I’m your personal security.” His smirk would have amused me if it didn’t scare the hell out of me.

“A bodyguard! I don’t need a bodyguard.”

“Mr. Witter believes otherwise. Are we leaving now?” His dark brows hitched up as he waited for me to answer.

I glanced at the time and growled. “Yeah, okay. Fine.” I had about twenty minutes to meet with Alex and I didn’t have time to argue with my bodyguard.

“Sorry,” I grumbled from the backseat. “I’m Sasha.”

He smiled. “I’m Ben. It’s nice to meet you, Sasha.”

“You too, Ben.” It wasn’t his fault and I didn’t need to take it out on him. We rode in silence for fifteen quiet minutes before I interrupted the silence with a shocked gasp. The building was gorgeous with its wrought iron details and the bell tower above. Bell Tower ? I wondered what this place was, but when I spotted Alex outside with a well-dressed woman in head to toe beige, I knew. “Thanks, Ben.”

“Sasha,” he called out with a smile, meeting me halfway with a sweet hug, and a kiss that was a lot less sweet with a hell of a lot of heat. “Right on time,” he whispered in my ear after breaking the kiss.

“We have an audience,” I whispered and nodded towards the group of giddy photographers behind me.

“For a good cause,” he promised and pulled back, taking my hand in his as we walked to the woman in beige. “This is Zora, the manager of this venue. What do you think?”

“It’s gorgeous. Is that bell tower real?”

Zora nodded. “And working as well.”

I listened with half an ear as Zora guided us through the most gorgeous wedding venue I’d ever been inside of. I couldn’t focus, couldn’t concentrate with Alex’s hand in mine. The casual kisses on my hand, the way he brushed a strand of hair from my face, tucking it behind my ear. All of it was wreaking havoc on my mind and my hormones.

It was all too much and I needed to get a grip. This wasn’t real, not my relationship with Alex or this wedding. I mean it was real as in it would be legal, but we weren’t in love except for the cameras. I pasted on a smile and tugged his big body to a stop, smiling up at him as if he were mine.

“This place is great, babe. But do we have a head count yet? You still haven’t sent me your half of the guest list.” There, the mundane details of wedding planning should have helped get me back on solid footing, but Alex’s smile shot that idea all to hell.

His big hand cupped the side of my face and he slowly brought his mouth down to mine for a slow kiss that incinerated my panties and stole my breath. He pulled back with a slow, sultry grin. “You’re right, honey.” He looked over at Zora with a sheepish smile. “I guess I got so excited about marrying Sasha that I skipped over some important details, like all the details before the wedding day.”

I laughed and bumped him with my hip. “The wedding night, don’t you mean?”

Zora laughed and put both hands to her chest. “You two are so adorable,” she cooed. “Congratulations.” She handed me her business card. “When you get those details settled, give me a call.”

I promised I would and let Alex lead me out of the venue with one arm flung lazily around my shoulders as if this was perfectly natural. “That dress is making it hard to focus on anything but your cleavage.”

My breath hitched at his whispered words. “Luckily you don’t have anything else to focus on,” I said and smiled up at him. “Other than why I now have a bodyguard?”

He was still looking at my cleavage and licking his lips. “Yeah, sure.”

“Focus,” I smiled and snapped my fingers in his face. “Up. Here.”

His smile grew. “Jack recommended it and I agreed. You can’t focus on the road and Dixie while being chased by photographers, that’s what Ben is for.”

Ugh, that was an excellent point. “Fine. My eyes are still up here.”

“Yeah but your cleavage is still down there, and your tits are a thing of beauty.” He licked his lips and leaned in, brushing a whisper soft kiss across my lips. “How does dinner sound?”

“Like this, arrghrrhrh.”

He froze, smiled wide, and then broke out into a laugh so loud and so masculine that it was contagious and we stood on the sidewalk laughing together like we were completely alone.

It was the kind of moment that made a girl forget what was real and what was fake.
