Chapter 3
Brady
“ M y philosophy is that kids are best when they are not seen. Or heard.” Sarah, the latest interview to be Layla’s nanny, not my next bedmate, purred the words through expertly lined lips and heavy lidded eyes. “Don’t you agree, sir?”
My brows arched at the woman, grateful for my big oak desk as a barrier between us. “No, I don’t agree at all. What are your qualifications?”
Sarah waved a dismissive hand in the air. “Oh, I have a kid of my own about the same age. I tell her to go to her room when mama needs some fun and she does. It works best for everyone.”
Was this woman serious? “I’m in need of childcare and nothing else.”
Her pink painted lips curled into what was supposed to be a sexy smile but it only served to piss me off. “It’s my experience that sometimes men don’t know what they need. Sometimes, they need a little push in the right direction.”
“Wrong. Look Sarah, I’m only in need of someone to care for my niece and nothing else. Is that something you’re interested in?”
She leaned back in her club chair, slowly crossing her legs to their best impact. “Yeah, sure.”
That was not the answer I was looking for. “Layla, can you come in here for a second?” It went against my better judgment to bring Layla into this but I needed to give every candidate a proper chance. Right?
Layla walked in, her blond hair pulled into a bun on top of her head, dark jeans and t-shirt gave her a look of a child much older but to me, she looked just like my sister. “What’s up, Uncle Brady?”
“This is Sarah. She’s interviewing to be your new nanny.”
The look Layla gave Sarah put a smile on face. “Is she qualified?”
“Of course I’m qualified, Lola. Why else would I be here?” Her smile barely reached her eyes and she arched her back to show off a mediocre boob job.
Layla glared hard at Sarah, arching a brow as she studied her. “My name isn’t Lola,” she snorted and glared at me. “No. Not her. Anyone but her,” she shouted, arms folded as she exited my office.
I don’t bother to try for a sympathetic smile. “This isn’t going to be a good fit.” The woman was more interested in my bed than my niece. I was sure she didn’t know who I was but the house and the need for a nanny was a good indicator that I had money. “Thank you for your time.”
Sarah stood, placing one knee on my desk and then the other, crawling across the large space until she was mere inches from my face. “It’s probably for the best,” she purred. “It’s not good to mix business with pleasure.”
My eyes bugged out of my head in disbelief. This was not real life. It couldn’t be. I took a few steps back, shaking my head. “I’m afraid you don’t understand.”
“Oh, I understand all right. You’re playing hard to get.”
“No.” Even if I was into playing games, which I wasn’t, that wouldn’t be one of them. “You need to leave.”
She froze and then frowned. “You’re serious?”
“I am.” I quickly rounded the desk and headed for the front door, my strides long enough to put plenty of space between me and the ravenous babysitter. “Thank you for your time, Sarah.”
“Your loss,” she shot at me angrily, shrugging as she rushed out the front door.
At this rate I would never get this fucking game finished. I needed time, plenty of time. Hours of uninterrupted time to focus on all the fine details that would make my game stand out from all the other first person shooters on the market.
“It can’t be this hard to find someone to watch my kid.” I shook my head and went back to my office in search of a phone number I rarely used. A few years back when my company was just getting started, I did some freelance work for a big name gaming company and made friends with one of the players.
“Yo, Brady man, what’s up? I thought you were dead.” Alex Witter laughed happily, the only way he knew how to laugh.
“Why would I be dead?”
“Because I invited you to my wedding. To my kid’s birthday party and even a coed baby shower, and you didn’t even say fuck off, that’s why.”
I frowned. “There have been some, ah, developments in my life that have required certain adjustments, which is actually why I’m calling.”
“I’m listening.”
I gave him a quick rundown of my sister’s death and the newest addition to my household. “I read about you falling in love with your nanny and I’m hoping you can recommend one for me?”
“To fall in love with?”
I rolled my eyes even though he couldn’t see me. “Funny.”
“Elite Nanny Service,” he said and rattled off a number that I quickly jotted down. “She’ll find you exactly what you need.”
“Perfect. Thank you, Alex.”
“Don’t thank me. I’m planning an anniversary party for Sasha and I expect you to be there. I won’t take no for an answer,” he said before ending the call.
I stared at the phone until the screen faded to black. Alex was a decent guy but he was far too gregarious and lively which is why we almost never hung out, but the number he’d give me was worth considering his invitation. Maybe.
“Elite Nanny Service, this is Serenity. How may I help you?”
“Oh, thank goodness. Ms. Woods, I was given your number by a friend, Alex Witter, and I am in desperate need of a nanny. As soon as you can send one over.”
There was a long silence on the other end of the line before a well-spoken, sultry voice spoke. “That can be arranged,” she said slowly.
“Oh, thank you! That’s exactly what I needed to hear.”
“But first I need you to come to my office for a proper interview.”
My shoulders sank in disappointment. Of course this wasn’t going to be easy. “You can’t just send me a qualified nanny?”
“To a man I don’t know and haven’t vetted? Absolutely not.” The woman sighed patiently. “It doesn’t work that way, mister?”
“Fine, I’ll be at your office within the hour. Is that soon enough?”
“Yes,” she said with a smile in her voice. “That works perfectly for me. See you then, mister?”
“Brady,” I growled. “Call me Brady.”
“I’ll be waiting,” she replied and ended the call.
As if I didn’t already have a shit ton of tasks on my plate, I now needed to leave my house and worse, I had to interact with people.
At least one person.
As far as I was concerned, that was one person too many. “Layla, get dressed! We have to go out for a bit.” Hopefully by the time we returned home there would be some plan for a nanny to start.
Soon.
