T he breeze off the water was crisp and salty, a perfect blend of ocean air and forest scent. I stood barefoot on the wooden deck, the sound of waves gently lapping against the shore filling the morning stillness. The house—our house—was everything we'd dreamed of. Nestled between the sea and a dense stretch of forest, giving us the best of both worlds.
After months of searching for the perfect place to call home, we'd almost given up. It seemed impossible to find somewhere that ticked every box. Near the ocean for Karel to swim, a forest for Lang to shift in privacy, and a place far enough from prying eyes that Henry could spread his massive—get this—rainbow-coloured wings without restraint.
Then fate intervened.
The guild's card arrived when we least expected it. Another hit. Another job. This time, a demon named Athos was moving into Chester's old territory, trying to seize control of the trafficking operation we'd shut down. And it just so happened that Athos had settled into a secluded waterfront property—a sprawling estate with an old mansion, a private beach, and acres of forested land.
The decision was easy. Take him out. Keep the house.
Lang appeared silently beside me, his arm snaking around my waist. His gaze followed mine out over the sea, the early sun casting a soft glow across the waves. "You like it?" he asked, his voice low and intimate.
I leaned into him, smiling. "Like it? I fluffing love it."
"You're not the only one."
I turned my head to see Karel emerging from the forest, his blonde hair slightly tousled, the salt air curling the edges. He had that easy smile I adored, the one that made my heart skip a beat every time I saw it.
Henry followed, carrying a stack of firewood for the pit we'd built tonight. The rainbow-wing tattoos that matched his wings peeked out from under his tank top, and his strong broad shoulders flexed as he dropped the wood beside the deck.
I grinned at him, happiness bubbling up in my chest as if it would spill over. "How the heck did I get so lucky?"
The battle with Athos had been brutal, but we'd taken him down together, just as we had with Chester. After the fight, no one batted an eye when we claimed the estate as our own.
Karel climbed the stairs and pulled me into his arms, his sea-blue eyes sparkling with joy. "We've got the ocean, the woods, and you. I believe we're the lucky ones, Little Bunny.”
Lang moved up next to us, his lips brushing my temple. "We have everything we need now."
I felt Henry step up behind us, completing a triangle around me. His warmth was solid and steady, anchoring me. He said nothing, but he didn't need to, my silent sentinel. His presence said it all. We were a unit.
My heart swelled. They were right. We were all lucky, and we were now complete.
As we stood there, the four of us wrapped in each other, the waves crashed softly in the background, and a seagull called from above. I knew, without a doubt, that we were exactly where we were meant to be.
Together. Forever.
And nothing—not demons, curses, or bad luck—would ever take that away from us.
