CHAPTER NINETEEN
T elling them that I might have heard the spell to unlock their powers from the Headmaster’s mind did not go well. They have been searching for a way to unlock their energy for a long time. I got their irritation with me, but I didn’t hide it from them on purpose. I just forgot.
We argued for so long that we missed our chance to meet with Lust. We’d have to do it after school. We still had the short schedule, so it wouldn’t be as bad as it could have been though it was still annoying.
Alaric and Dex forgave me first. The brothers were pissed. We talked it out, and I was promised a spanking as punishment later, but they understood. After they ranted and stormed around the kitchen of course.
Now, we were sitting in class like nothing happened. Kain was still bugging me through the bond. I promised not to close it, but he was getting on my nerves.
How could you not tell me right away? I helped you orgasm to get your strength. I was literally right there. Yep. His voice was sexy as fuck, but I wanted to make him mute just then.
As I’ve told you before, I don’t remember. I think it was because I didn’t completely trust you back then. You were always going to side with Tila, and she wanted me dead. Why would I tell you something that could make you even stronger against me?
He scoffed in my head and out loud. Professor Meatt gave him a shut-the-fuck-up look but didn’t say anything. I was glad. He was one of the good professors. I didn’t need more drama.
I would have never hurt you.
You literally held me down with your shadows so Bones could whip me with his air magic to make Tila happy. Stop lying to yourself. He was sitting next to me, so he reached over and pinched the back of my arm. I smacked his hand away. Asshole.
That was before we met you. He drummed his fingers on his desk as he glared at me.
My eyes rolled in the back of my head with my sass. How about the times you guys bullied me all because I killed a horrible man that tortured Vivian. Her last Master let it happen. I was making it clear that shit didn’t fly with me.
Fine. I get it. It just sucks you may not remember it correctly. We’re going to have to break into the Headmaster’s office. He knows the spell but can’t tell us because Lucifer bound him. Believe me, we’ve tried to get it out of him.
A knock on my brain had me groaning. I rubbed my temples as I focused. It was Demarcus. Stopping the link between Kain and me, I picked up the connection. I could feel his nervousness. We might be getting closer as friends, and he might be dating my best friend, but I’d still cut him. The image of blood waterfalling out of a cut made by my soul weapon had me sighing in satisfaction. I might have sent him the image as well… Oops.
Lilah is worried about you. You didn’t crawl into her bed last night. A bit of jealousy seeped into me from him. I had no intentions of doing anything with Lilah, but I still sent him an image of us kissing. He hissed at me like a vampire, which only made me chuckle.
Tell Lilah that I am working things out with my mates. Oh, and Demarcus, fuck off.
His fear through the bond was almost as good as coffee. He didn’t respond, but I felt the unspoken understanding. My mouth opened in a drawn-out yawn. Today had already been long and it was only first class. I shifted in my seat.
Classes just didn’t seem important when I was constantly fighting for my life. I would rather be doing other stuff right now. Like breaking into the Headmaster’s office.
I couldn’t miss anymore classes, though. The Headmaster could only give me so many days off. Grades counted here. Get bad grades and the professors have the right to kill you.
I chanted out my schedule in my mind to hopefully help me relax. I always found going through facts helped me. I used to do the types of demons and types of magic. It helped before. I might need to start that coping habit again.
History with Meatt.
Magic 101 with Mr. Blood.
Curses 101 with Mrs. Pain.
Combat with Mr. Fear.
Lunch and my day is done.
Then I get to train, hunt, interrogate, and torture. The life of a Queen was long. Why couldn’t I just lounge in bed with my mates, being fanned and fed like in the movies? It seemed like such a royal gig. Despite the long day ahead, the chanting helped. My restlessness faded as I focused on Professor Meatt.
“When Lucifer fell, met his mate, and claimed the Underworld as his domain with his seven brothers, it was a brutal place. No one survived long. The land was beautiful, almost mimicking the Fae dimension, but it was just as deadly. No one really knows why, but after the fight with angels over Earth, the loss changed the land, turning it into what is before us today. It made the red sand cover everything, killing the wildlife. It also bound the demons to their rules.” He moved the papers around his desk as he spoke. “No one, except maybe the gods, may understand why the land changed the way it did. We can all only theorize.”
I ignored him after that. My mind couldn’t focus on history when the future was more important to me. I’d focus more when Lucifer was dead. Besides, watching everyone go all dopey-eyed when Lucifer came up irked me. He was not a leader people should idolize.
I lifted my communicator. The hologram screen appeared. No one else could see it unless I wanted them to.
“How is the prisoner?” I texted the Headmaster.
He wrote back instantly. “He is still alive, but seven of your faction members have been fucked within an inch of their lives.”
My gut churned. “Forced?”
“No.” The waiting circles appeared, indicating he was typing more. I took a relieved breath. “He’s polite until his dick comes out. The bastard made me watch the first few sessions to prove he wasn’t killing them. You should take over this babysitting job.”
I snickered. The professor glanced my way. His eyes left mine in a second, though.
What’s funny? Dex asked, but I could feel them all linked into the conversation. My brain almost vibrated with the energy.
Talking to the Headmaster. Lust is screwing tons of his guards, but to prove he meant no real harm, he made the Headmaster watch. He is not pleased. As soon as I finished, the chuckles and pleased murmurs came.
Serves him right for locking us out of everything just because you said so. We knew him longer. Kain’s tone was still like that of a petulant child, but in his sexy voice. It was confusing.
Get over it. I outrank you in all ways right now. Once we kill your daddy, you can become king and get some of that power back. Just tell your demon to focus on that. I met his gaze halfway through my response.
He rolled his eyes at me. You’ll still be higher up.
I shrugged. We can figure something out. I honestly didn’t care who was in charge. If he didn’t want to lock me away for my safety, I would have let him run things. My demon would have grumbled about it, but our goal was to get revenge.
I focused back on my texting. “So, how long are you going to be there? I could skip class and take over.”
“No. You need to be in class. Queens still have to follow the rules. I’ll be here until lunch time.” I couldn’t help but smile. It was a perfect time for a B & E.
“Fine, but I’d rather be there.” My attempt to sound disappointed didn’t quite hit the mark.
“No fucking Lust.”
Growls erupted around me. Shit. I had the bond open enough that they could hear me read the messages.
You’re not going anywhere near Lust. Kain had a snarky tone that made me react.
I’ll fuck whoever I want. More growls. Trigger’s and Bones’ desk were vibrating as their anger grew. Dex didn’t look happy, but he didn’t look murderous. Alaric knew I was bullshitting because he just rolled his eyes and went back to his note taking.
I swear to fucking Nyx, I’ll spank your ass raw if ? —
I cut Kain off. Instead of demanding and ordering me to do shit, just ask me if I’m interested or if you have to worry.
He sighed. Well, are you? Do I?
No. He’s attractive, but I don’t plan on adding anyone to my lover list. My scowl deepened. See? Was that so difficult?
His answering grumble was cute. I had to stay focused though, because I had a plan that didn’t involve sitting in class all day. I just hoped we could pull it off because it would change everything. And might win us this war.
