CHAPTER THIRTY
TRIGGER
W hat just happened? These fluffy fuckers just appeared out of nowhere. The fear in the air coated my skin when they first arrived, giving me an urge to make cute rugs for my mate. Then, they asked us to visit their home. Well, they asked Ivy, but I go where she goes. I wouldn’t miss the opportunity.
Kain, Bones, and I were obsessed with ancient creatures as kids. We all wanted to shift into one and escape. I couldn’t miss the chance to actually hang out with them. The beasts were as smart as humans, but they didn’t have a form to shift into. They were their beasts, which was why most demons thought of them as animals.
Why did crazy things like this keep happening? Prophecies? Extinct Hell creatures? Curses in the fruit cups? Seriously, what the fuck? Killing all of Hell and starting from scratch sounded better than the drama piling up. That way, I could be spending time with my Dreamgirl without the negative aspects tainting the moments we share together.
“I say, this was one Heaven of a night. The hunt with Ivy was amazing, but that was intense. Do you think shit like this is going to keep happening?” Dex asked, taking the words right out of my mouth. He moved over to our girl and wrapped an arm around her and Alaric’s shoulders.
“I about shit myself. They made my animal roll over and expose its stomach. Thank goodness my vampire didn’t give a shit. It was the first time I truly loved my blood-sucking side.” Alaric’s brown skin was paler than normal, so I could have guessed.
These men were my brothers now, so watching them had become a game to me. I waited for my time to strike. Sometimes, I needed to be the trickster. Sometimes, I wanted to be kind. Every so often, vengeance or antagonism called to me, but I usually saved those for people outside of my family. I had a habit of taking things too far, at least that was what Kain said, and I’d never want to hurt my people.
Ivy sighed. “I hope not. Let’s go home before anything else happens.” The somber voice didn’t sound like my girl. She let the stress get to her. My Dreamgirl should be living on cloud nine, not worried to the point that strain lingered in her voice. I’d need to fix it, but how?
We made it almost to our building and I didn’t have an answer to that question. So, when a shrill cry sliced through the air, it was a welcome distraction. My natural reaction was to ignore it, but my mate didn’t even hesitate to dart off toward the panicked cries.
“Ivy, wait,” Kain called out, but she was gone. Good thing I’d follow that ass anywhere. We all would, and we had no shame admitting our obsession. It was clear through our bond.
In the back of our building, hidden in the shadows were a group of men attacking a female. She wore jeans and a pink shirt that drew attraction. Did she deliberately want to stand out? In Hell, the weak should blend in.
I didn’t even get a good look at the male demons before my Dreamgirl tackled the biggest one to the ground, and she flung another away with her air magic. Her badassery took my breath away. She was too good for me but fuck if I’d give her up. Being selfish didn’t usually work with my girl, but she was the exception.
One of the men moved to help his friend, but his grubby hands weren’t touching my mate. I focused on my witch ability. The energy felt like a storm inside of me. My eyes turned red as I shouted, “Ignis.” Commanded by my words a fireball formed in my hand. I didn’t hesitate to throw it at the Troll reaching for Ivy.
They were all Trolls. The larger form almost looked like rocks of some kind. Their noses are long and droopy. These assholes were also strong, so I didn’t want any of them hurting Ivy. My girl was strong, but I preferred to be cautious.
“Get off me, bitch. I’m going to eat the fucking Pixie. Do you have any idea how rare it is to find one that big?” the man on the ground yelled.
“Somnum,” I said and flung the spell in his face, knocking him out. My mate had a soft spot for creatures. I helped her free the ones a professor had caged not too long ago. So, he couldn’t eat while we’re around.
My magic sparked around me like fireworks. I usually depended on my potions, but I’ve practiced my spell work for moments like this. I just wished it wasn’t so difficult. I could do the little stuff, it was the big stuff I had issues with. Those took a lot of concentration, and I didn’t have it in me to focus that hard. It was annoying. The magic should listen to the words I said, not my intentions.
Sensing the danger, the trolls scattered. Kain’s shadow, the one Ivy called Smokey, pounced on one of the runners. He was on constant patrol these days because he listened better than any of Kain’s other shadows. The others wanted to play, got distracted, or had a desire to kill that couldn’t be stopped. Smokey was a good boy, even if he kept trying to bite my hand off when I petted him.
Dex and Alaric went after a troll trying to climb the wall of all things.
Bones let his rage out and tackled the last one with his fists flying. He was going to need another calming shower.
I grabbed my dream girl by the hips and lifted her into the air, putting her on her feet. Maybe she needed a spanking to remember not to run off half-cocked. This could have been a trap.
“Ivy! Bitch, your timing is impeccable. These assholes wanted to eat me and not in the fun way.” The woman with sepia skin, a mischievous glint about her, and curly hair that bounced when she moved knew my mate? Argh, the spanking wouldn’t work now. She saved… a friend? Classmate?
“Holy fuck, Marnie?” My mate dashed out of my arms like they were made of fire. If this woman wasn’t close to Ivy, I’d kill her. My demon didn’t like that one bit.
“What the fuck are you doing here!” Ivy shouted. Her excitement almost turned the air around her into a rainbow.
As they hugged each other, my annoyance rose. I couldn’t do spankings and now, I couldn’t kill the large Pixie. She was tiny for a woman, my mate had to bend over just to hug her, but I had never seen a Pixie so big.
Honestly, I didn’t understand it. Did her father use a human’s vagina as a swimming hole and jacked off in it? I snorted at the image. Could I do that? Disappointment hit when the rules came back to me. I couldn’t turn my body that small. Sighing, I pouted. I wanted to swim in my mate’s pussy.
Kain came over to me and nudged me. “Don’t be a sour puss. That’s the friend she left behind on Earth. She has been around since Ivy was a child, remember.”
I folded my arms over my chest. I wasn’t being a sour puss, dick, I said in our connection. Kain could control it, so only he heard me. Out loud I said, “She better not be gay, or I might accidentally stab her.”
He snorted. “Let’s get them inside before other Pixie eaters come around and smell her. Use the potions for them.”
My head snapped to his. “But I didn’t bring enough.” I folded my arms around my chest.
He rolled his eyes and called Smokey over. My hand went out to give him some loving around his ears. The cutie pie growled and snapped at me with his sharp teeth.
I cooed at him for being so loving. It was how all Kain’s shadows showed their affection. “Aww, such a cute puppy.”
The little shit rolled its eyes at me. Two in the matter of seconds. That was a record for me. Wait, no it wasn’t, but I still took pride in my pretend record.
“You go with the girls. We’ll walk and grab Lilah on the way.” I nodded. Kain knew me well. Separating me from my mate while this potentially gay woman held my mate would get the Marnie girl stabbed. My hungry blades needed some action. The night wasn’t over yet.
