Abby

“ T hat was a beautiful ceremony,” Abby said, hugging her best friend, Xyla.

“Thank you,” Xyla said, smiling at her new mate, Sean McCullum, a wolf shifter from the Nightshade Wolf Shifter Pack. “Never in a million years would I have thought that I would go through a mating ceremony with a shifter, especially Sean.”

“I’m so happy for you,” Abby said. “You know, I was thinking about moving down here. I know you’ll be busy with Sean and your soon-to-be pup, but I need to get away from the folks, and I would miss not having you around.”

Xyla gasped. “That’s a great idea. We’ll talk more later. Right now, I want to dance with my new mate.”

Abby watched Xyla walk into Sean’s arms and saw her looking into his eyes so adoringly. The chemistry between the two of them was tangible, and Xyla imagined that she could see a bubble form around them as they danced their first waltz as mates.

Once others began to join them on the dance floor, a deep voice next to her asked, “Would you care to dance?”

She smiled and nodded. Sawyer was Sean’s best friend and had been his best man during the ceremony. Abby had felt a tingle of electricity explode inside of her when she had lightly touched his arm.

Sawyer swept her onto the dance floor, his hand on her waist and holding her other hand. She put her hand on his shoulder and they glided across the floor.

“Theirs was an interesting love story,” Sawyer said, nodding at Sean, who was smiling at his new bride.

Abby smiled into Sean’s silvery gray eyes. “Yes, it was. It took a lot of courage for her to stand up to her father the way she did.”

He nodded. “I’m glad she did. Sean was about to drive us all crazy because he had fallen in love with her and thought that he lost her.” A huge smirk covered his handsome face.

Sawyer was an amazing dance partner and led so well. Their bodies were close together and a tiny fire flickered alive inside of Abby. The tuxedo did nothing to hide the fact that Sawyer worked out regularly and was extremely well-built. Abby imagined what he would look like naked and how sensual and incredible it would feel if their bodies were pressed together.

Abby licked her lips and imagined him kissing her. She could almost feel his lips against hers as their naked bodies were pressed together and his arms held her tightly. She felt a moist heat growing between her legs, and she wondered what it would feel like to make love to him.

“Um, the dance has ended,” Sawyer said, smiling at her.

“Oh, sorry, I was uh – lost in thought.”

Abby blushed bright red as she stepped away from Sawyer and quickly rushed over to her seat at the table. She gulped down the entire glass of water, refilled it, and drank it, too, trying to cool down.

What in the world is wrong with me? I’ve never had that reaction to any man before, and I’ve danced with a lot of men and dated a few. She had never gotten beyond the kissing stage, and here she was trying to have sex with him in her mind in the middle of the crowded dance floor.

She glanced at Sawyer out of the corner of her eyes. He looked over at her and smiled.

Oh, heavens. I’ve heard that shifters can read people’s minds. What if he knew what I was thinking?

Xyla sat next to her. “Are you okay? Your face is bright red.”

“I’m okay. I just got hot.”

Boy howdy, did I just get hot.

Xyla’s father walked over and held his hand out to his daughter. “Would you like to dance with me?” he asked, almost shyly.

“Of course, Daddy,” Xyla said.

Abby smiled. She was glad that Xyla and her father had made peace. Sipping her water, she looked around the room. Never in a million years would she have guessed that she would be in a room full of shifters, mostly wolf shifters. She had known they existed and was sure that she had probably met a couple during her life, but it wasn’t like they advertised who they were, especially to humans.

Her eyes kept going back to Sawyer. She felt a twinge of jealousy as he danced with several other women who had attended the mating ceremony and were now at the reception. She told herself that it was stupid because Sawyer probably didn’t even remember her name.

Throughout the night, she danced with a couple of different men, but none of them had the same effect that Sawyer did. The feeling almost knocked her off of her feet.

Finally, the evening ended and she made her way back to Angel’s Creek Inn. She soaked in a hot bath for a while. Every time she closed her eyes, she pictured Sawyer. She smelled his scent and wondered what kind of cologne he wore. It was intoxicating. Spreading her legs a little, she touched the hard pebble between her legs and rubbed it. She imagined what Sawyer would look like naked and pretended that he was touching her.

Tingles of electricity started at the top of her head and the tips of her toes and danced through her body, meeting in her belly. She trembled and exploded all over her hand. Moaning, Abby wondered what had happened to her and what it was about Sawyer that had brought on that kind of reaction.

The next morning, Abby got a text from Xyla. Sawyer just bought the local clinic from the old doctor who retired. He’s looking for a nurse.

Abby wrote down the address. After printing out a copy of her resume and newly issued RN license, she headed to the clinic, hoping that she could keep her cool while they talked.

Sawyer greeted her with a wide smile and, in spite of herself, she blushed.

“Xyla said you were looking for a nurse. I just earned my degree and license,” she said, handing her resume to him.

“You’re planning on moving to Angel’s Creek?”

Abby nodded.

Sawyer looked over her resume. “I need a nurse and you’ve got the qualifications. Can you start tomorrow?”

“Absolutely,” she said enthusiastically.

She went back to the inn. Benny, the older man who owned the place, greeted her.

“You’ve got a big smile. Good news, I hope?”

“Yes. I was just hired as a nurse at Dr. Sawyer Cooke’s new office.”

“That’s terrific. Sawyer is a good man. I’ve known him since he was born.”

“He seems to be pretty great. My best friend, Xyla, just married Sawyer’s best friend, Sean.”

“I was at the ceremony. I didn’t stay too long at the reception, though. I saw you there.”

“Oh,” Abby said, not sure what else to say. She hadn’t noticed Benny there.

“So now, you’ll be needing a place to stay, I reckon,” Benny said.

Abby nodded.

He looked intently at her for a minute as though he was trying to look into her soul. “I know a guy that has a place for rent. Let me call him for you.”

“Thank you.”

Two hours later, Abby was setting her bag on the kitchen table in the small, furnished, cottage-like house she had just rented. It only had one bedroom and the kitchen was small, but it was perfect for her. It was also in her price range, which was also important. It included the utilities, which made her happy.

She sat on the couch and texted Xyla. Got the job and got a cute little house. I’m going up to Albuquerque to pack my clothes and everything else in the apartment. Luckily, I don’t have much.

Abby made the couple hour trip back to Albuquerque and quickly packed her clothes, sheets, towels, pots and pans, dishes, and books. The apartment had been furnished so she didn’t need to worry about that. She had just enough room left in her car for her small TV in the front seat.

She walked down to the manager’s office and told him that she was leaving and gave him the keys. It was a month-to-month lease and she was giving him the two weeks’ notice as was required. He was a nice man and went up with her to do the walk through.

“Everything looks good. Where should I mail the check for your deposit?”

Abby wrote out her new address, hugged him, and was on her way. When she got to her new home, she got online and changed her address with the post office.

Feeling very satisfied, Abby ordered a pizza and a couple of sodas and sat on the couch. A small twinge inside made her wince. This had gone so fast. Abby had been wanting to get away from Albuquerque for a long time, but this was sudden. She could hardly believe that it was real.

After dinner, she took a quick shower and went to bed. She was so excited that she lay awake for a while. Staring at the ceiling, she thought about Sawyer and wondered what it would be like to work for him. It was one thing to dance with him and fantasize about him. That nice persona he put on could be fake.

Xyla really likes him and says he is a great guy.

She wondered how she was going to work with him and not have an orgasm every five minutes as she fell asleep.

Morning came quickly and Abby was ten minutes early, which was exactly as she planned it.

Sawyer smiled widely at her, as he pulled into the parking lot at the same time that she did. “Good morning. How are you?”

“Excellent. I found a house to rent already. Benny, the owner of Angel’s Creek Inn hooked me up.”

“He’s a great guy. Come on in and I’ll introduce you to the rest of the staff. They’ve been here for a long time. They worked for the doctor who just retired. He vouched for them, so I kept them on.”

She nodded.

The staff was in the lobby going over the day’s schedule when Sawyer and Abby walked in. “Everyone, this is Abigail Clark. She’s our new nurse. Abby, this is Martha, our physician’s assistant, and Jennifer and Georgia, who are medical assistants.”

They all shook hands with her. Sawyer pointed to a blond sitting behind the desk. “Cindy is the receptionist and keeps us all straight. Brent Davis is the office manager.”

“It’s nice to meet you guys. I’m excited to be here.”

“Welcome. Coffee is in the lounge, and Martha brought donuts,” Cindy said.

“Oooh, Martha is going to be one of my new best friends,” Abby said, rubbing her hands together.

“You’re going to need it. We have a busy day today,” Cindy said. “I suspect that everyone in town wants to meet the new doctor.”

Cindy wasn’t kidding. The day started off ten minutes later, and Abby felt as though she was running her feet off. Everyone who came in was incredibly nice, even the ones who truly didn’t feel well.

Sawyer was amazing. He treated every single person who walked through the door with respect and gentleness. He listened to everything the kids had to say, even if they just wanted to talk about their new game or something fun they did at school. She also noticed that he didn’t prescribe medications unless they were absolutely necessary. Instead, he would recommend ginger or peppermint for upset tummies, and other natural remedies that were proven to work.

It’s safe to say that he’s a hit. People won’t be missing their old doctor for very long. Sawyer has captured all their hearts.

They ate together during lunch, which was staggered so there was always someone taking care of patients. He gave her a quick rundown of the town.

“I know you know about shifters. Although only a small population in the world are shifters, there are quite a few in Angel’s Creek. Not only is our wolf shifter pack here, but there is also a bear shifter clan and a dragon shifter clan in the area. We also have various other shifters who aren’t attached to a pack or clan. We all get along. Angel’s Creek is an amazing place to be. You’ll love it here.”

Abby smiled at him. “I’m sure I will. Everyone’s been great so far.” She sighed. “It must be amazing to be a shifter. I wish that I could be one.”

“I think it’s pretty awesome,” Sawyer said, moving his head and shoulders back and forth and grinning.

Martha and Brent came into the lounge, signaling that it was time for Abby and Sawyer to get back to work.

Abby couldn’t help but notice the spark of electricity that hit her every time they touched. A couple of times, she had to close her eyes and push back naughty thoughts of him being naked and wanting him to touch her.

He is my boss and is likely going to be a good friend. I need to knock it off before I get myself into all kinds of trouble.

That evening, she headed over to Howlers’ . Jade, Sean’s manager, was working behind the bar. They had met before the mating ceremony.

Jade grinned widely. “Welcome to Howlers’. Xyla and Sean aren’t here.”

“I should hope not. They should be enjoying their honeymoon, even if they did decide to stay in town.”

Jade laughed. “I think both of them have had enough of vacationing out of town for a while.”

“Probably so.”

Abby ordered a sex on the beach fruity alcoholic drink and a cheeseburger.

“I have to be careful. These things catch me off guard. One minute I’m completely sober, and the next minute I’m sloshed.”

Jade laughed. “I’ll cut you off after one.”

A good-looking man sitting on the stool next to her grinned. “I’ll make sure you get home safely.”

Abby said, “I just bet you would.”

The man continued to flirt with her. Jade told Abby that Eddie was harmless and was a hopeless flirt.

Eddie lifted his glass to Jade. “I’m just trying to find the right woman for me since you broke my heart when you went through the mating ceremony with Marvin.”

Abby grinned at Eddie’s jokes and banter. She was flattered that Eddie found her so attractive, but she couldn’t help but wish that it was Sawyer sitting next to her, flirting, instead.
