Hope
“Where are we going, Nico?” I asked.
“Hope, I’m not telling you. Just like I didn’t tell you the 814 times you asked before,” he said.
“It’s my graduation. Shouldn’t you be nice to me?” I asked.
“I’m already being nice. After all, I didn’t put you in the trunk,” he said.
“Ha-ha, jerk,” I muttered.
But even still, I smiled, leaning back against the car seat.
Something glinted, and I looked down, my gaze landing on the ring Nico had given me.
I still wasn’t used to it, and more often than not left it at home. But on days like today, special days, I wore it. But whether I had it on or not, each day was still filled with joy and ecstasy at what had become my life.
Nico, never one to drag his feet, had proposed two weeks after I moved in, and we’d gotten married two weeks later.
It was a small ceremony, just Sebastian, Enzo, a few of his associates, and Molly.
And, of course, Champ as the ring bearer.
It had been beautiful and something I never dreamed of.
Nico had insisted I quit my job and told me that he wanted me to focus on finishing my degree. I hadn’t realized how much that meant to me, but today, when I had walked across the stage, my husband and best friend there from the audience, I felt so happy I thought my heart would explode.
“Where are we going again?” I asked.
Nico didn’t even bother to answer my request.
Instead he kept driving.
When we were about thirty minutes outside of the city, he turned off, drove down another road, and pulled to a stop.
“We’re here,” he said, smiling.
I looked around, then met his eyes.
“We’re in a field,” I said.
“No. Not a field. Your field,” he said.
“My field for what?” I asked, looking at him.
“Your rescue,” he said, his face in a bright smile.
“What rescue?” I asked. “Nico, what you talking about?”
“You always said that the rescue in the city was nice, but it got too cramped. But if you had space, you’d be able to help more dogs and keep more of them alive longer. Now you have that space,” he said.
“You mean…” I asked, looking at the very ground, then back at him.
“Yeah. You can design it from the ground up. We own about fifty acres. We can even build a house here if you want,” he said.
“You did this for me?” I said.
He frowned. “What kind of question is that. Of course I did this for you. And you deserve this and so much more.”
He walked over and cupped my face with his hands. “Hope, I love you with all my heart, and I’m going to spend the rest of my life proving it,” he said.
Then he kissed me.
