Chapter 9

Chapter Nine

EVO

Leaning back with my eyes closed, with my arms crossed. I silently cuss LeX , as I am having a hard time pulling out of the sedatives he gave me. Now , no matter what. I can’t seem to stay awake. Just as I am dozing off once again, I hear a ticking noise coming from the other side of the glass enclosing this room. Blinking away the sleepy haze, I see Ember standing on the other side, waving at me.

While she is making an effort to speak to me, I nonchalantly shrug my shoulders signaling that I am unable to hear her. I can’t help but burst into laughter when she angrily stomps her foot. Ember is unfamiliar with the advanced technology always available on this ship and frequently forgets to ask for assistance. I’m somewhat tempted to let her keep searching for the microphone in the Med Bay that would let me hear her voice from this side of the enclosure, but I know that LeX will freak out when he sees her alone in the med bay, so I take pity on her.

“ Destroyer , can you advise Ember on how to turn on the two-way communicator, so that she can talk with me freely.”

I see Ember jump and I don’t know if it’s because the Destroyer’s voice scares her, or if she was messing with things she should not be. She comes back over, pressing herself against the glass.

“ EvO , can you hear me now?”

“ Yes , loud and clear, you don’t have to shout.”

“ Oh , sorry. Has she woken yet?”

Her facial expressions are always so amusing. “ Not that I know of Ember , but I dozed off again. You shouldn’t be down here. We are quarantined for a reason. Who told you about her, anyway?”

“ Well , ViN of course. I don’t know why either of you thought I wouldn’t notice that he has been working in the Control Center more than usual. Earlier , I wanted him to come help me hang a picture in our room, when he hesitated to leave the helm. Instantly , I knew you were all up to something. Then when I asked him where you were, and he shrugged his shoulders, that was simply an unacceptable answer. ViN has never been able to keep anything from me for long. So , a few kisses later, I had all the info I needed, and here I am.

“ Are you OK , EvO ? Is she going to be OK ? I sure hope she is. I can’t wait to talk to her. Do you think she will like me? Simply because we are both human girls doesn’t mean she will. Most of them on Earth didn’t; they just pretended because of my father. With that thought, maybe I should just come back later.”

“ Ember , I am sure she will find it soothing that another of her kind is here when she awakens. You need not worry yourself over such trivial things. To answer your question about her health. I don’t know how to read most of these screens, but I do believe she is stable. Unless LeX is keeping her under like he has me for the last rotation. I simply don’t know what is keeping her from awakening yet.”

“ What about you EvO how are you feeling? You took quite the risk going out there after her.”

“ I’ve been better, but I can feel myself healing.”

Before I can say anything else, she is motioning towards the female. “ Her eyes are moving. I think she is waking up.”

Instantly , I am on my feet, leaning over her.

“ EvO , for the love of god, get back. You are going to scare the living hell out of her. You need to remember she has never seen an alien. Go sit in the corner or something. I will try to explain to her what has happened and where she’s at.”

It takes all my willpower to recede back into a corner of the room as I watch her become more animated. Her hands start twitching first then her entire body stretches. The moment she starts to move around she is lowered down to the bed and side rails are put up around her to keep her from falling off.

However , the instant her eyes open, she goes perfectly still. I can’t see her eyes, but I swear I can smell her fear and I step back farther into the darkness, knowing that my own dark coloring will help hide me if she glances this way.

Ember instantly starts tapping on the window. “ Hey , over here.”

She waves and I watch the female turn her head slowly towards all the racket Ember is making.

“ Hi , I’m Ember … Don’t freak out. You are safe.”
