Chapter Thirty-Three

QWIN

I make myself stand here and face all the same questions and concerns the last group had. Rehashing the exact speech and lowdown on what has happened to us. The only difference is this group has several couples that were retrieved together. One set is slightly older than anyone else I have seen so far. While the pods are being removed so that the last group can be brought in. I make my way over to them as some of the others are being led out of the room.

“ Hello , are you guys ok?”

“ We are together and breathing youngin, we’ll figure the rest out as we go.”

“ I know I introduced myself earlier, but I wanted to make sure you guys know that you can call on me for anything you might need. I have only been awake a few days longer than you, but it’s amazing how quickly we adapt. May I ask who you two are?”

“ My name is James and this beauty here is my wife, Carla .”

“ Did you two purchase your pod?”

“ No , we were kinda talked into it … forcefully. Once the storms hit, we knew things were going to get bad quickly, and it wouldn’t be long before the looters started moving from place to place. We were on our way out of the city, pulling our camper to a spot where we were going to meet up with our kids, and blew a tire. We ended up breaking down right in front of the Scientific Center . When I first saw the guards come out. I was trying to explain to them that we would leave as soon as I got the tire changed, but they insisted that we come with them at gunpoint.

“ One of those scientist fellows met us in a room and explained what was really happening. At first, Carla and I both tried to get them to send someone younger. We have had a good life, and the thought of leaving all our loved ones behind was not something either of us wanted to do. However , we did not realize that no was not an option. They threatened Carla to make me get in the pod. Then because I was in, she followed reluctantly. So here we are. A little beat up, and slightly concerned about what’s next. Not to mention a little heartsick, but we will figure it out, we always have.”

“ I’m so sorry. Unfortunately , I worked for that Scientific center ,and I know exactly how you feel because I was forced into one of the pods myself. I understand all your emotions. Is there anything you need right now?”

“ Nah , Carla is still feeling light-headed, so we are just going to sit here until her body settles. We appreciate your kindness, though.”

“ That should be fine, don’t be alarmed when the Maintenance bots start moving the pods out from around you; they are making room for the others.”

“ Well , since we are in the way, we should go … Carla dear, do you think you’re able to get up now?”

“ Help me get my legs under me, James and I’ll do my best.”

“ Wait just a second. I don’t know how they work, but I’m sure these bed things move. Would you like me to ask someone?”

“ No , thank you, dear. We’ll manage.”

I watch as they literally lean on each other as they walk slowly out the door that all the others exited through. Standing in the middle of a now empty room is where EvO finds me. The moment my eyes lay upon him I smile, as butterflies seem to take off in my stomach. “ You lost, handsome?”

“ Been walking in circles, looking for my girl.” His long legs eat up the distance between us.

“ Must be some lucky chic, if she has you chasing after her.”

“ I’m not sure how fortunate she is, but I know I crave her like no other.”

“ You almost make it sound like she is edible.”

“ Oh , she is, in more ways than you can imagine.”

“ I have a very active imagination.”

Just as he leans down to kiss me my stomach growls. He immediately picks me up in his arms. “ Seems like someone is requiring sustenance.”

Draping my arms around his neck, I lift myself up, kissing his cheek. “ You know I can walk, right?”

“ You are too weak right now; your belly told me all about it.

“ Well , then carry on my handsome alien, who am I to argue.”

For a moment, my smile fades as my mind starts to doubt this is real. How did I go from a normal working girl … to this, and what is my place in this new world? It’s that mind against my heart thing again.

“ EvO , what’s going to happen after all this?”

“ I don’t know all the details, but I believe my Father and Commander ZoD are looking into reestablishing your people on a world they can make their own.”

“ I see.”

“ What troubles you, my Qwin ? Moments ago, you were all smiles, now I can tell you are sad once again.”

“ The unknown is scary. I don’t know why it’s any different here than it was on Earth . I didn’t have a clue where my life was headed there either.”

“ Nonetheless , it was familiar, at least you are not the only one of your kind on board. Things will calm down in time, Qwin . Until then, I must ask that you stop your stomach from attacking me, as it seems to be getting angrier the longer it takes me to get you to the sustenance area.”

I can’t help but laugh, as he seems so serious.
