2 Years Later

Jack

Looking around the café, I’ve never seen it quite so packed. It’s a massive turn-out, filled to the brim with our friends, family, and favorite customers, all smiling and staring expectantly at us. I grab Mia’s hand, clear my throat, and take a deep breath. I know she hates the attention even more than she hates crowds, but when she looks up at me, there’s only comfort and trust in her eyes. I squeeze her hand twice before starting.

“We wanted to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you for being here today to support us. Many of you have spent countless hours helping us prepare for this day, and we thank you for your time and dedication.”

There’s a balloon arch surrounding the front door, streamers hung throughout the newly renovated space, and treats and snacks laid out all around. It’s been incredible to see the space revamped in a way that still keeps the integrity of what it once was. The same hardwood floor, exposed brick, and seating, just modern additions that give the space new life. An upgraded barista bar, a giant glass pastry case, new light fixtures and paintings adorning the walls from local artists.

I’m definitely not one for speeches, but this is just too monumental not to commemorate. It’s either me or Mia, and I’d take the bullet for her any day, metaphorically speaking. Literally too .

“Cordelia’s has always held a special place in my heart. You see, this is where I met my beautiful wife.” I motion to Mia, whose cheeks turn the most adorable shade of pink, giving me the soft smile I love so much.

“Although she didn’t quite know it yet, it’s also where I fell in love with her.” I point to our spot, with a newfound reserved plaque hanging on the wall above it, an inside joke from my comedian of a wife. “That booth right over there is where I asked her to marry me.” I break out in a smile, as I do every time I picture the angelic creature I get to spend every day with.

“Safe to say this café has meant the world to me. Thank you, Harold, for working all of these years to make Cordelia’s such a gem. Thank you for trusting us to continue its legacy. I’m not sure I can brew a cup of Joe as well as you can, Harold, but I promise to try my hardest. I can at least guarantee that the cookies will always be delicious. My family and I are honored to be taking it over and will continue to ensure Cordelia’s remains a staple in our little community for years to come.”

Cheers erupt from the crowd as Mia nestles into my side. Doug and Bev Cameron step forward with their phones at the ready. I wrap my arm around my wife, pulling her closer to me. My other hand resting protectively on her stomach as we pose for the opening day picture. There’s a gentle thump against my palm, the best feeling in the entire world.

“I think he’s as excited as we are,” Mia whispers, resting her hand over mine.

There is no part of me that ever thought I’d reach this level of euphoria, that ever thought I’d be lucky enough to get this. But I thank the universe, my lucky stars, and fate every day for giving me my shot.
