CHAPTER SIX

Rowan

“What the fuck is going on?”

I blinked and looked around, my eyes heavy with sleep. The room was dark besides the burning embers in the fireplace. I couldn’t see much.

Suddenly I remembered and as the memories assaulted my brain, the lights in the room flicked on and Julian roared. Mila grabbed the blanket covering us and pulled it up to her chin. “Julian! What are you doing here?”

“Rowan! What the fuck man?” He stormed over. “Get the fuck off my sister!”

“Chill, man. I’m naked. I don’t think you want me to get up. The better question is what are you doing in my house? Don’t you knock?”

“I did! You didn’t answer! Maybe I wouldn’t have had to barge in here if you two answered your phones!”

Julian raised his fist and looked like he was about to swing. Maia screamed and jumped up, taking the blanket with her. “Get out! Let us get dressed!”

Cold air whipped at my skin and I grabbed my shirt laying next to me with one hand and covered my dick with it while blocking Julian’s swing with the other. “Dude! You need to chill!”

Julian backed away and shook his head. “That’s my sister! I trusted you!” He walked out of the room and I heard the bathroom door slam.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck! We shouldn’t have fallen asleep!” Mila cried as she began to get dressed. I got to my feet and did the same.

“He shouldn’t of just walked in here. Besides, I thought I locked the door.”

“Fuck! What are we going to do?”

I pulled her into my arms and thankfully she didn’t resist. “I think it’s time we tell him.”

“But…”

“We can’t keep sneaking around like this. I love you, Mila. I want to be with you. Your brother needs to accept that. Unless you don’t want to.” I searched her face for clues.

“I do. I love you, too. So much. I just don’t want him to get mad.”

“He’ll get over it.” I kissed her soft lips.

“How can you be so sure?”

“Because he knows I’ll spend my life doing whatever it takes to make you happy.”

“Oh, Rowan…”

“It’s true. I love you so much, Mila. I’m going to make you my wife one day.”

She grinned. “Are you now?”

“Yep. Now let’s break the news to your brother.” I took her hand in mine and squeezed it tight. “Julian, you can come back in now.”

I heard the door open and his heavy foot falls as he made his way towards us.

“You love her?” Julian stood before us, his feet spread wide, his hands balled into fists at his sides.

“I do. You know I’d protect her with my life.”

“You love him too, Mi?” Julian looked at his sister and his anger melted away into tenderness.

“I do.” Tears slipped down Mila’s cheeks and I squeezed her hand once more.

“Then who I am to keep two people apart who love each other?” Julian grumbled. “I don’t like it. But maybe, and that’s a big fucking maybe, I’ll start to.”

Mila clapped her hands and threw herself into her brother’s arms. “Thank you! He makes me so happy, Julian.”

“I know he does, sis. You think I didn’t notice the mood changes in you two? You’ve always been happy, but lately it’s been over the top, and you, tough guy, are a soft puddle of mushy love.”

My mouth fell open. “You’re full of shit.”

All three of us laughed and the tension in the air dissipated.

“Just no mushy shit around me, okay?” Julian said but then opened his arms. “C’mon, bring it in you two.”

The three of us hugged.

Finally, I had my girl and it was no longer a secret.

A week later, I was already shopping for a ring. Mila moved in with me only a few days after we told Julian and I couldn’t wait any longer to ask her to marry me. I dragged Julian along with me to give me some pointers on what his sister liked.

Then I planned the surprise. It wasn’t hard with Mila’s birthday coming up, along with a few of my guys helping me out, and a couple of the women at the spa. I picked up a cake from the bakery in town and wrapped up the ring in a box, before putting it in another box, and then another, until several boxes were layered in and I wrapped the final big one.

After a home made dinner, I took her out the back porch, which was now decorated with string bulb lights, rose petals, and a bottle of champagne on ice on the table. The cake and gift sat beside it along with two champagne flutes.

“Happy birthday, my gorgeous girl.” I cupped her face with my hands and kissed her deeply.

“Aw, Rowan, you didn’t have to do all this. Dinner was enough.”

“I know, but I wanted to. You deserve it. You deserve the world.”

She kissed me again and then hurried over to the table like a little kid on Christmas. “Mmm, cake!”

“I’d like you to open your gift first.”

“Okay.”

As she unwrapped box after box and laughed in between, I took pictures of her beauty and captured the moment on my camera. When she finally got down to the engagement ring, her mouth fell open. I was already down on one knee. “Will you marry me, Mila?”

“Of course I will! Of course!” She gasped and pulled me to my feet. I slid the ring on her finger and we kissed more.

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

We popped the bubbly and sliced the cake.

I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect evening.

Soon, my girl would be my wife.
