Two Years Later

The chains rattled around my ankles as I walked to the visitation booth. A guard with an expressionless look on his face escorted me.

Dominic sat on the other side of the glass that separated us.

He didn’t show any emotion when our eyes met, but I knew he was as happy to see me as I was to see him.

The guard walked away when I took a seat.

Dominic and I reached for the phone at the same time.

“How are you?” Dominic asked.

His dark blue eyes took me in as if assessing for injuries. I could scoff over that. Prison was hell, but fuck if I didn’t carve out a place for myself, residing as one of the Devils.

I grunted.

He didn’t have to worry about me.

I just needed him to do whatever it took to get me out of here .

Even Hell could become too hot for Lucifer.

His eyes moved over to where the guard stood. Even through the phone, we couldn’t say what needed to be said. There was no way to tell if it was tapped or not.

And this city would love for nothing more than to put Dominic Madden behind bars for good.

It was sheer luck on their part—and stupidity on mine—that the girl had come across me as I took out Richard Jones.

I was careless and still paid for it two years later.

Her testimony and the recordings she took were all the evidence they had to go on to lock me up. It seemed that was enough, considering how many corrupt players were involved.

But the evidence was spotty at best, and we just needed something better to prove my “innocence”.

I was not gonna die here. I would bust out if I needed to, but it seemed I wouldn’t need to.

My eyes took in the man who was like a brother to me.

Him, Micah, the club, and seeking vengeance on the person who had put me here for the past two years.

Those were the only things I was living for.

“The stars were shining especially bright last night,” Dominic said, his voice gruff.

If I looked closely, I could make out the ghost of a smile curving around his lips.

I wasn’t as reserved.

I shot him a shit-eating grin.

The stars were shining bright last night, in-fucking-deed.

I was getting the fuck out of here.

I laughed, and Dominic lost his composure and joined me.

The guard, hearing the commotion, came out.

“Time’s up,” he said, kicking the back leg of my chair.

I saluted Dominic and stood up. His grin went up a notch .

I didn’t miss the fact that the guard, a much smaller man than me, took half a step back before thinking about it and stood his ground.

Did he think the chains holding me would protect him if I decided to go after him? Lucky for him, I was in a good mood. And I was about to leave this hellhole—legally. I wasn’t going to do anything to ruin my chances of that.

Not when Dominic had worked so hard to create the evidence that would prove my innocence.

I kept my eyes on the guard when I passed, noting the thin sheen of sweat covering his forehead.

I whistled as I walked back to my cage.

I was getting the fuck out of here. And I was going after everyone who played a part.

Starting with dear old Judge Hudson’s fucking daughter.
