Chapter XXXIX

Jaxon

G etting to the coven house wasn’t the problem. I’d surveyed the house enough times over the last year to know exactly where to go, but something kept us from being able to blink onto the property this time. Every time we tried, we hit a fucking barrier and were thrown back to Emily’s studio.

Adrian braced his hands on his knees and bent over, out of breath after being tossed back to Emily’s conjuring room for the fourth time.

“They know - huff - we’re coming - huff -,” he panted.

“Obviously,” I stated. “I’m sure they had someone watching the warehouse.”

He turned from me and stepped back, his eyes widening in shock as Emily crossed the room, lifted the wooden chair that Erik had been strapped to just hours ago and smashed it against the wall with a violent scream.

“You sure she doesn’t belong to Wrath?” He whispered, not taking his wary eyes off of her.

I snorted out a laugh as she continued pacing the room, looking for more things to destroy.

No, she was mine. And she was fucking perfect.

The only woman who ever scared him was mother, but I could tell he was happy to keep his distance from Emily now. Personally, I thought her passion and rage were adorable.

“Okay. New plan,” she said, letting out a huff as she zipped my leather jacket up to her breasts and leaned against the workbench. Hell’s Fire, she looked so fucking sexy with her long raven hair down in waves and my riding jacket hugging her curves.

“Jax, you and Gul -,” she started.

“Adrian,” my brother grit out between clenched teeth, cutting her off.

I coughed to disguise my chuckle, but the side eye he gave me told me I was in trouble for sharing that.

She rolled her eyes and crossed one leg over the other, bracing her elbows on the bench as she leaned her back against it.

“You and Adrian , blink us down the road. I’ll approach the house first and try to find a weak spot in their shield to get in while you two search the perimeter and keep the Lycans away.”

“No. Fuck no,” I growled, but she lifted a hand, letting me know that she wasn’t finished and like the puppet I was, I waited for her to continue.

“We need to figure out what we’re up against and I need time to work on that barrier. I can do this. You know I can,” she said, her eyes glowing gold as she looked up at me from beneath her thick lashes.

“I can’t lose you too,” I whispered, taking her hands in mine.

Pulling one of her hands away, she raised it up, cupping it over the ball python tattoo on my neck that she’d given me on that first night when I barged into her world. My breath stuttered in my chest as she stared into my soul.

“Quod ad te pertinet, perdere non pores,” she repeated my own words back to me from just a few nights ago.

You can’t lose what belongs to you.

I shook my head, but I knew she was right. About everything. There was no other way and right now, this was our only option. The longer we waited to come up with a better plan, the more we risked losing them both.

Adrian stepped beside me and placed his hand on my shoulder before I could find another way to object, blinking us all to the stop sign just down the road from the coven house.

We walked together toward the property and I watched with my heart in my throat as Emily let go of my hand to creep around the back, staying just far enough away from the barrier to not be thrown back or noticed by the guard dogs on patrol.

“What’s the plan?” Adrian asked.

My stomach knotted as I reluctantly tore my eyes away from my Queen to focus on him.

“We take out as many of these fuckers as we can,” I growled. “We kill them all if we have to and give her time to get in. Then, we go get our brother.”

“Fuck, yes. Let’s have some fun.”

Brandishing his double swords from the duffle bag, he charged toward the front of the property, careful to avoid the glowing barrier, and let out a battle cry.

Not exactly the way I would have made my grand entrance, but fuck it.

I joined him with a bark of laughter, running head first into the chaos as I shot off fireball after fireball at the Lycans running toward us. Stupid fucking mutts.

A howl in the distance, coming from the direction Emily had gone, distracted me for just a moment, but it was enough time for one of the Lycan’s to get a claw into my side. He growled as he circled me and I growled back.

“It’ll take more than a fucking flesh wound to kill me, bitch,” I spat, raising my arms up into the air and summoning fire from below him.

The smell of burnt fur and charred flesh filled the air as Adrian and I continued to take on the pack, but no matter what we did, they just kept coming.

It was better that they focused on us though, hopefully that meant that the coast was clear for Emily.
