CHAPTER SIX

JAKE

Austin opens the gate, letting us through. Ethan rolls in behind us, with Skyler following him in her truck. Everyone else is already here, from the looks of it. We park our bikes in the lineup outside the clubhouse.

Sadie blows past all of us, parking Jinx’s truck down near the end of the clubhouse beside her Challenger. When she gets out, she wastes no time walking to her car, bending over and hugging the damn hood. These prospects obviously don’t know what’s good for them, since their eyes are glued to her ass. Not their fault it’s on full display in her tight denim shorts. But they should know better than to gawk at the Pres’s niece if they want to keep breathing on their own.

Hawk’s standing in front of his bike, watching her every move. He’s pissed at the little show she’s putting on. Can’t say I’m not feeling the same.

Backing away from the car, she proceeds to bend all the way over, nearly touching her toes, as she shakes out her long, thick hair, then stands back up

Fucking hell. She’s going to get someone killed.

I stalk to her before Hawk can do anything he’ll regret or have to answer to Pres for.

I don’t have ‘save my best friend’s life’ or ‘murder the Pres’s niece’ on my bingo card today. She sees me approaching and quickly throws her bag over her shoulder, looking ready to smart off. Skyler comes up between us, stopping Sadie in her tracks.

Skyler smiles at me while placing her hands on Sadie’s shoulders and says, “Come on, Sadie. Let’s go grab us a couple of drinks inside, huh?” Ethan trails behind them, pointedly glaring at us.

Once the women have moved inside, Hawk catches Colt by the arm and growls, “The fuck you think you’re looking at, prospect?”

Feigning innocence, Colt replies, “What? Don’t tell me you don’t enjoy watching a good-looking woman walk away when she’s got an ass like that.”

“You’ve got a fucking death wish, kid.” I grumble.

“She’s family, shithead.” Hawk emphasizes each word. “You want to keep the cut on your back? You best remember Sadie Jay is off fucking limits. You got me?” Hawk gut punches him for good measure on his way to the door. The prospect scowls back at him but doesn’t argue.

“Go get her fucking keys and bring them to me. Now .” I order over my shoulder as we pass through the doors.

Sadie’s shoving her purse in a cubby under the bar, grabbing two water bottles from the mini fridge in the space beside it. I watch her scanning the room, checking her surroundings, taking in every detail. I smile to myself. She may not like the MC, but she sure as shit listened when we were teaching her things.

“Hey, Sky.” Skyler turns from where she and Declan are talking at a table and nods.

“Hold on, hon. I’ll be right there. I need to talk to Declan for a minute. Leave my water on the bar top, would you?”

Sadie drops the bottle like she was asked, but Ethan snatches it up, walking over to his woman, he opens it and hands it to her. Skyler rolls her eyes and takes a drink.

The room’s filled will low rumbles of conversation as the other guys mill about shooting pool or lounging on the couches waiting for church to start.

Sadie leans against the bar and asks, “Where’s Gabe? What did Uncle Mack say I’m in trouble for now? Breathing ? ” She rolls her eyes dramatically, but there’s a slight tremor to her voice.

Is she’s nervous?

“Gabe’s in his office on the phone. He’ll be out shortly,” Blake answers while handing a beer off to Caleb at the other end of the bar.

After taking a pull from his beer, Caleb comes over and embraces Sadie. “Hey there, Short Stack.”

“Hey, Papa,” she smiles, settling into the hug.

“You staying out of trouble?” She looks up at his face and smirks. “No, huh?” He chuckles. “Worth a shot to ask.”

“I’m not purposefully in trouble, if that’s what you mean.”

“You know damn well what I’m talking about, little girl.” Caleb steps back, planting himself on a barstool. “You getting into shit you don’t have no business getting involved in?”

She smiles. “If I was, you wouldn’t know. I make it a point not to get caught.”

Sadie shrugs, avoiding Caleb’s unapproving glare. She turns my way and asks, “You got a couple quarters, Jake? I want to play Pacman while I wait.” She huffs, exaggerating her boredom with being here, placing her water bottle on the glass top of the game. It’s an old school tabletop machine Pres found and brought to the clubhouse back when I was a kid. The damn thing still works and has become a constant competition between the brothers and Sadie, but mostly with her and Hawk.

“I've got some change if you feel like getting your ass handed to you again,” Hawk teases, knocking her playfully on the shoulder.

“Whatever, asshole. Just dump the coins on the table and let's do this.”

“Really, you two? Again with this bullshit?” My eyes roll of their own volition. “This rivalry has gotten out of hand. Don’t you think?” They look at each other, then back to me, both shrugging me off.

They get lost in their game and shit-talking to each other and I decide it’s the perfect time to ask Sadie questions while she’s distracted.

“Why’d you leave your car here for so long?”

She doesn’t look up from the screen, her hand slapping the joystick around in a frenzy. “I had Jinx’s truck, figured I’d get Loretta after you guys got back. It wasn’t like she wasn’t going to be locked away and taken care of. Although, you better tell those jerks at the shop next time they service my baby, they need to make sure they wash their damn handprints off her body. No woman wants the evidence of her being manhandled to be seen by others.”

Hawk’s eyes snap up, and the game suddenly goes black. Sadie’s slamming on the tabletop, looking for the issue, when I notice Hawk dropping the power cord to the floor.

“What the hell, Nathaniel? I was winning!” She shrieks.

“The fuck did you just say?”

Ah shit.

“Uh, I said, Nathaniel. I. Was. Win-ning,” she draws the word out slowly. “Are you going deaf?”

“No,” he growls, standing up from his seat. “I heard you. What I want to know is who’s been manhandling you and leaving their marks behind?”

“Nunya.”

“ Sadie,” I warn. “Cut the bullshit.”

“You’re all a bunch of fucking hypocrites.” Sadie gets up, shoving her chair as she takes two steps back, completely forgetting about the game, glaring daggers from Hawk to me. “If I wasn’t Thomas’s daughter, but I dressed like a skank, sucked dick like a champ, and didn't mind being passed around by every brother in this place, it'd be okay with you. But because I have some asshole’s DNA linking me to the family tree, I’m not allowed to have a fucking life. You don’t want me to find the right guy, you don’t want me to find any guy,” she seethes. “If I wasn’t the President’s niece, but I was old enough and willing, even you would be open to taking your fill so long as I was a club whore, right? ”

“Jesus.” Scrubbing my hand down my face, I silently wish this crazy train would stop before it goes off the damn rails.

“Sadie,” Skyler calls out softly. I didn’t even see her making her approach. I expect Ethan to stop her since there’s a high probability of this conversation going nuclear between these two. Although, I trust Hawk wouldn’t swing on a woman, I also trust that Sadie doesn’t give a fuck who you are. She will swing.

“Sweetie, maybe we should save this argument for another day, huh? You just got back. We have a graduation party to plan. I’m sure the guys have some gossiping or boys’ club bullshit to get to.” The way Skyler says it, she makes it sound like we’re all here to shoot the shit. I don’t call her on it though, because somehow, she’s managed to talk Sadie down from her ledge.

“I don’t know how you dealt with them for the last six years, Sky. How did you put up with their constant double-standards?” Sadie asks, tears rimming the edge of her eyes.

“Well, for starters, I wasn’t with this group here. I was in Mountain Heights. Second, I never felt like a prisoner because I had Cash. He was my Mushu. You know? The little dragon in the story who seemed to always show up at just the right moment and make things easier. And third, I never hung out at the clubhouse. It was safer for the girls if I didn’t.”

Ethan chuckles behind her. “I’m sure the guys appreciated you staying away too, Sunshine. It can be rough when all the available pussy has their jaw wired shut.”

“Huh. I always thought they appreciated what I did for them.” She smiles. “Cash said it was cool as long as her pussy wasn’t sewn shut, then she was still somewhat useful.”

The men within earshot laugh. Ethan shakes his head and Skyler smiles, giving him a look that says he knows she’s right. Without missing a beat, she turns back to Sadie and says, “Do you really want to compare yourself to a club whore? It’s not a secret aspiration or anything, is it?”

“Fuck no,” Sadie spits in response. “I mean, Mason’s good-looking, so I might consider being his plaything for a night.”

“You'll be a club whore over my dead body,” Pres shouts from across the room. “And if you don’t want the prospect to die a long and painful death, you better not let Mack hear you say another fucking word about him or how you would do him. Got me?” He crooks a brow at her, daring Sadie to say another word about it.

“Agreed,” Hawk growls.

“Fuck you,” Sadie whispers, but we hear it.

“The hell did I ever do to you?” Mason whines from somewhere behind us. Sadie shrugs.

“Sadie Jay?” She turns into Gabe’s waiting arms, smiling from ear to ear. “Hey sweetheart.” He pulls her in tighter, lifting her slight frame off the ground, and kissing her temple. “I’m glad to see you’re alright. What’s this shit I hear about you leaving your car and ditching your phone at the shop for the weekend?” He glares down at her.

“I was with Jayde most of the time. I didn’t need my car. When I did, I borrowed Jinx’s truck. My stuff was too big to fit in Loretta’s trunk, anyway. I used Jinx’s truck to get the big stuff moved into my new house. Then I hung out with my friends after.” She twists her toe into the carpet, dropping her chin avoiding Gabe’s disapproving glare. Seems to be a lot of that going on around here. She lets out a long, dramatic sigh. “I wanted to do things for myself. If I told you guys what I was doing, you’d send prospects over to do all the work.”

Gabe nods. “Damn right we would.”

“You know damn well I can take care of myself. Why do I have to have people …” she snaps her head in Hawk’s direction. “Watching my every move and reporting back to Uncle Mack about it? I’m moving home, for shit’s sake!”

“Easy,” Gabe chides. “Remember who you’re talking to, girl.”

Sadie’s quick to apologize. “Sorry, I mean no disrespect. I just want to live my own life. I’m not in school anymore and I live down the road. Do you really need to have trackers on all my things?”

“That’s a conversation you’ll need to have with Mack. Those were his stipulations when you moved to Baron’s Edge.” Gabe lifts his hands.

“But I’m not in Baron’s Edge anymore,” Sadie huffs. Gabe doesn’t budge on the subject, and by the look of defeat on Sadie’s face, she knows it. “Is that all? Can I go now?”

“Yeah, sweetheart. You can go. But keep your phone on you.” He pulls her cell phone from his back pocket and hands it to her, then hugs her tight. He whispers, but I’m close enough I hear his words. “Quit trying to give Hawk a heart attack and get my prospects killed, yeah?”

She pulls back, placing the phone in her back pocket, smiling softly at him. “No promises.” Gabe chuckles, giving her one last kiss to the head.

Sadie runs to the bar, squatting down. “Where are my keys?”

“I put them on top of your bag,” I respond. We watch as she pulls out another phone from her bag and begins shooting off a text. She doesn’t even look up from her phone as she walks out the front door.

“Is that another phone?” Hawk whispers next to me. We both watch as she moves to the front door and spot the phone Gabe just handed her still firmly seated in her back pocket. “ Son of a bitch. ”

Skyler must hear us, her devilish smirk giving away to her pride. “Wait up, Sadie. I’ll head out with you,” Skyler calls out.

“Where are you ladies off to?” I have to smile at Ethan’s gruff tone. He really doesn’t like Skyler to be out of his sight for long. Skyler looks to Sadie for the answer.

“I need to run some errands, pick a few things up, and head to the mall,” Sadie provides.

Ethan drops a hard kiss on Skyler’s lips. It’s enough to get the guys in the room calling out and whistling at his antics. When he breaks the kiss, he leans into Skyler’s ear and says something to her, making her cheeks turn a bright shade of pink. She gives him a subtle nod, then leaves out the door with Sadie.

“Brother, you are pussy whipped,” Hawk teases Ethan.

“Maybe so, but you won’t hear me complaining.” Ethan smiles.

“Church in ten minutes,” Gabe bellows. “Mack has something he needs to talk to us about. Hawk,” Gabe calls. Hawk is busy tapping away at something on his own phone screen. I’d bet money he’s trying to see if he can get a track on the second phone she had on her.

“Sadie may or may not be in danger.” Both our heads snap in Gabe’s direction, ice running through my veins at his words. Gabe continues, “I don’t have the full story yet, but until we have answers, I need to know where she is at all times.” His brow creases as he glares at Hawk, still fucking with his phone.

“I’m on it, Pres.”

“Just be more discreet about it and save us both from her wrath, yeah?”

“You want a prospect on her?” I conclude. Pres nods. “Gotcha. Blake!”

Blake pops out from behind the bar and jogs to where we’re standing. “Tail her, but don’t let her see you. Take a cage.”

“On it, Pres.” Blake’s headed for the door, snagging a set of keys from behind the bar on his way out.

“Now, for the rest of you assholes, we have church,” Gabe shouts, and we all file after him.
