CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE

AVERY

My phone buzzes in my bag on the floor and fills my heart with panic.

I gently slip out of Jake’s arms and slide myself out of bed. Grabbing the phone out of my bag, I answer Sadie’s text, letting her know I’m up and moving. I grab my clothes from my bag and fumble around as I try to throw them on without making any noise. I throw Jake’s hoodie on, grab my shoes, and I’m putting them on when I stumble into the table.

Shit.

He doesn’t even stir.

Thank God.

I guess three rounds of sex will tire a guy out.

Grabbing the rest of my things, I’m about to head out the door when I notice a notepad and a pen sitting on the table with the hotel logo on them. In case Jake wakes up before I return, I take a second to leave him a note. I know he’s going to be pissed no matter what, but maybe if I leave him a note telling him I’m not running, that I’ll be back, it won’t go over so badly.

Yeah, might as well prepare my ass now, because there will be nothing soft about what he does when he catches me.

The click of the lock is so loud, I drop to the floor and hide behind the entry table, praying Jake didn’t hear it. If he wakes up, there’s no way I can explain any of this away.

When I’m sure he’s not waking up, I crack the door open, slide out as quickly as I can, letting as little light in as possible from the hallway. I slide the do not disturb sign over the handle and very slowly close the door behind me. I take off running down the hall as fast as I can to the stairwell. Grabbing the key card from my back pocket, I use it to open the door.

The air must not circulate through the stairs because I’ve just stepped through the door and I’m already sweating. Or maybe it’s my nerves because I know I’m going to be in deep shit with Jake for this .

I find Sadie sitting on the steps on the second floor with her back leaned up against the wall.

“Took you long enough. It must’ve been another nice night, huh?” she teases. I feel my cheeks burn red, but we don’t have time for this right now.

“Shut up. How’d you get away from Hawk, anyway? We heard muffled moans and knocking sounds coming from your room earlier when we walked by. We figured he cuffed your ass to the bed. Jake bet Hawk shoved your head in a pillow so he wouldn’t have to hear your sassy ass for the rest of the night.” Cocking my head, I arch a brow at her. She's the one with the red face now.

That’s what I thought.

She clears her throat and goes back to business, typing away on her iPad. “He’s a heavy sleeper.” She shrugs with a smirk. “It helps that I gave him a little something in his beer before he fell asleep.”

“Jesus, Sadie. You’re going to kill someone doing that one of these days,” I whisper. Though scolding her in a whispered tone has almost the same effect as yelling at her does. None .

“Ok. Head down the stairs. When you get to the main floor, you’ll make a left. Go through the kitchen. At the back of the storage room, there’s a short hallway and a door that leads to the back alley. You’ll use the keycard to open it and Thomas will meet you there in his truck. When you get to where you’re going, text me, and then again on your way back. You’ll use the keycard to get you back in.”

It's a lot of instructions that I hope I can remember. My heart is racing, adrenaline is pumping.

“Oh, here!” she says, placing the sapphire daisy bracelet she gave me on my wrist. “You left it on the bathroom sink at Vincenzo’s when we were helping Antonio. I thought you might want it. You know, for good luck,” she says, giving me a quick hug. “Now, get the fuck out of here. You have two hours. Five a.m. That’s what time you need to be coming back in so we can get back to the rooms and into bed. Well, you’ll need to get naked first, so he doesn’t suspect anything.” She wiggles her brows and smiles at me.

“What about you? Won’t you need to strip down and get back into bed?”

“Nah, I’ve still got his shirt on under—” she stops, realizing what she’s just admitted. I point at her and laugh.

How does it feel?

“Just get here by five so we can get in before the guys notice we’re gone. Got me?” she snaps. I don’t bother to tell her it won’t matter what time I get back. If Jake finds my note, he’ll hand me my ass anyway.

I couldn’t leave without telling him I wasn’t running away. I want this with him. I want to be his and see where this will go.

It’s time to live my life happy.

“Yeah, I got you.” She smiles a big, cheesy grin at me.

“What?”

“You’re starting to sound like one of us now and I, for one, love it. You’re finally home, Aves.” I smile back because she’s right. I am home. I’ve found the place where I belong. The piece I was missing all this time.

My family.
