Chapter 7

HUNTER

Donovan smells like Omega.

But not just any Omega. He smells like…like someone I’ve only thought about in my dreams.

Which is why I eye him suspiciously when he comes into the kitchen in the morning.

I know he got home late last night, but I thought it was because he was looking at properties, not getting off with a ridiculously delicious smelling Omega.

“Morning, sunshine,” I say. “Have a nice trip?”

He gives me an unimpressed look as he opens the fridge. “Why do you ask?”

“Because you smell like an Omega,” Liam pipes up as he butters a piece of toast. He chews thoughtfully, an eyebrow raised as he looks at Donovan from the dining table.

“Ah. That.” Donovan pulls out a premade smoothie and unscrews the cap. I wince as he drinks the green sludge, wondering why the fuck he does the things he does.

To be fair, it is Donovan, though. There’s no explaining him half the time.

“Okay, so what? Did you finally stop being celibate?” I ask, leaning against the marble island. “What was she like? And why didn’t you share?”

He narrows his eyes at me. “First of all, I didn’t have sex with anybody.”

“You smell like you did,” Liam observes. “We can both smell her on you.”

“Yeah,” I mutter, annoyed. “You smell way too good. You’re lucky I don’t punch you in the face with my boner.”

Donovan holds up a hand. “Okay, stop . Don’t punch me in the face with anything. Can you really smell her that strongly on me? I barely touched her.”

An involuntary growl rumbles in my throat. “Yes. You smell like you’ve been rolling around in slick for hours.”

“It’s unpleasant,” Liam adds kindly. “I suggest you take a shower.”

To my surprise, Donovan smiles. “This is good,” he says. “I knew I was right.”

“You always think you’re right,” I say, rolling my eyes.

“And I usually am.”

“Right about what?” Liam asks.

“I found someone for us. For all the upcoming events, including the wedding,” Donovan says. “And now I know I made the right choice.”

My brain screeches to a halt. “Wait—what?”

“We have a date now for Kelly’s wedding. She’s agreed to meet with us, and if all goes well, she’ll act as our Omega for the next few events leading up to it.” Donovan looks at me, smoothie in hand. “We talked about this,” he says, as if I’m a child.

“No—no, you talked about this.” I look over at Liam, who meets my gaze. “ We never agreed to this. What the fuck ?”

“You just said she smells good,” Donovan mutters. “You threatened to punch me with your boner.”

“I don’t have a boner, asshole. It was a metaphorical boner.”

“I think there’s a better use of metaphors,” Liam says, and I glare at him.

“You’re okay with this?” I spit, irritated. “Donovan made this decision without us, and you’re just fine with it?”

It’s not that I don’t trust Donovan. I do. But the idea of someone new coming in when we haven’t had an Omega in years is equally terrifying and exhilarating.

But it should have been our choice, not just his.

“It would have been better if you had told us first,” Liam says gently, his green eyes. “I think that’s what Hunter is saying.”

“Nothing is set in stone,” Donovan huffs. “Like I said, if you had been listening ,” he pauses to give me a pointed look, “we’re meeting her later this week. I wouldn’t have made this decision unless I thought it was best for us.”

I scowl. “Yeah, but some of your decisions are fucking bullshit.”

A low growl emanates from Donovan’s throat, and I should know better than to challenge him, but I feel betrayed.

“Hunter,” Liam snaps. “We’re just meeting her. It will be fine.”

I will forever be grateful to Liam for playing peacekeeper and being logical, but sometimes it’s too much.

Donovan makes stupid decisions because he’s arrogant, but Liam keeps both of us in check.

They’re my best friends and packmates for a reason.

That doesn’t mean I can’t get annoyed, though.

“What’s she like?” I ask quietly.

“April?” Donovan asks, and my inner Alpha stirs.

April.

Even her name is perfect.

Springtime, flowers, and sunshine.

Mine.

“She’s intelligent and carries herself well,” Donovan says. “And she didn’t give two shits about who I was.”

I catch Liam smiling. “Really? She didn’t fawn all over you?” he asks, amused. “How did your poor ego handle that?”

Donovan’s eyes narrow. “Just fine. It was…refreshing.”

I snort. If I didn’t adore her before, I do now.

I would pay millions to see someone knock him down a few pegs.

“Refreshing, huh?” I smirk. “You mean she didn’t faint at the Axton name? She is perfect for us.”

Donovan scowls. “Do you always have to be a dick?”

I shrug. “Yup.”

“Did you tell her about the wedding?” Liam asks. “How much did you explain to her?”

The wedding.

The stupid ceremony none of us want to go to, yet it would be considered an insult if we didn’t.

The drama was years ago. All of that is behind us.

But that doesn’t mean we want to go .

“I didn’t go into detail,” Donovan says. “I just told her that there were a few events we needed her for. I took her to dinner and explained it.”

Irrational jealousy races through me.

Dinner. He had dinner with April , and Liam and I weren’t there.

A low growl sounds in my throat, and Donovan raises an eyebrow.

“Nothing happened,” he says. “It was a business dinner. You’re acting like a lunatic, Hunter. Chill the fuck out.”

“I am always chill.”

Liam coughs, and I shoot him a look.

“She’s coming over in a few days. Until then, get your shit together,” Donovan snaps.

“My shit is always together.”

Liam snickers.

“You know what? Fuck you too,” I snap at him.

Donovan sighs. “Look. I’ll shower, get her scent off me, then we’ll discuss more,” he mutters.

Liam nods. “That’s a good idea,” he says patiently. “I think what Hunter is trying to say is that he’s excited.”

I scoff.

Sure, I’m excited.

But it’s much more than that.

The sweetness emanating off Donovan is nothing I’ve ever sensed before.

Even when we had an Omega years ago, I didn’t react like this.

April might as well be a perfect scent match, because my mind is screaming mate.

I’m not just excited, I’m obsessed.
