Chapter four

Luz

T his was the tenth circle of hell.

Inconspicuous and bland, the La Quinta Inn I didn’t use social media much beyond the ghost account I had on TikTok that I used to watch fashion influencers. When your life involved the occasional murder, it was best not to leave a social media trail of your behavior.

Melody was easy to find. We both followed Autumn’s account.

Photos and videos of the pretty blonde filled my screen. Hot girl walks, iced coffees, peppered with the occasional night out. I scrolled back to October, Halloween night.

Sure enough, there was a video of her with Aaron, and several other people, taking shots in their costumes. A couple of them I recognized, and the one man I didn’t had been tagged as the mysterious Jason, Aaron’s roommate.

Coincidence?

I didn’t believe in them, so I added his name to the list of potential sheep.

Reading through the comments, it was the usual.

Looking stunning babe!

I got a fire you can put out.

Get your hot ass over here!!!!

Looking at the video, I spied the microwave in the background of the shot, and zoomed in.

8:59 p.m .

The wheels in my brain turned.

A party with lots of people was ideal for creating an alibi.

I would know. I did it with Aaron.

Aaron and Melody, assuming she was the other sheep, could have easily snuck out from wherever they were, slipped out of their costumes, and become the sheep.

Going through the comments again, one jumped out at me this time.

SciGuy_Aar0n: Cheers to happy hunting tonight!

It was innocuous really. Evidence that would never hold up in a court of law.

I, however, was wholly uninterested in the burden of proof.

As far as the sheep were concerned, I was prepared to act as judge, jury, and executioner, and in my eyes, Melody was damned.

I opened my messages and typed one out.

Luz: Hey Melody, just wanted to check in and see how you’re doing with the news about Aaron. Text me anytime.

I hit send, then paused for a second, thinking about everything I’d learned from Autumn.

Luz: XOXO

Maybe she was a sheep, maybe she wasn’t, but she knew enough that she wasn’t innocent .

I meant what I’d told Lucian, anyone who enabled rapists was just as bad as they were.

And if she were a killer too? Well, then Melody deserved everything she had coming to her.

Briefly, I considered texting Alister or Everest and telling them what I suspected, but I shut that thought down fast enough.

Everest would have Melody dismembered before I could get any information out of her, and while Alister was decidedly more patient, he was a still a Blackwell, and my death at their hands was still very much on the table.

Not to mention, Lucian’s deal was for me to find the Virgin Sacrifice Killer. Undoubtedly the arrogant man assumed one of the Blackwells would be doing the killing once I did.

That wasn’t going to happen.

I’d never needed a man to kill for me before, and I didn’t now.

Stretching, I cracked my back and reached for the list, adding one last item.
