25. Amy Tattles on Herself

CHAPTER 25

AMY TATTLES ON HERSELF

A my couldn’t believe that Natasha was the only person who knew what she had done. She was used to being transparent with the people in her life, and it was starting to bother her that she had to bear this awful situation alone.

The first step to processing all of this is to tattle on myself.

She didn’t want to do it. She was in for a lecture from her friends—probably one in surround sound—but she had to tell Laura and Jake, at a minimum. They probably assumed something terrible had happened, and she hated admitting it was her doing. I’ll save them for last.

Belinda read her mind and texted to check on her. Amy had been quiet at work since the breakup, and Belinda had been kind enough not to ask her anything about Drew.

Belinda: How are you feeling?

Amy: I’m okay. It still hurts, but I’m working through it.

Belinda: And are you ready to talk about what happened?

Amy: Only if I can just give you the facts and not have to get too deep into it.

Belinda: Deal.

Amy’s phone buzzed with a call from Belinda. She doesn’t waste time. Amy got through her story with minimal tears and only basic input from Belinda. She was thankful that her friend could simply listen.

“Have you told Laura yet?”

“Nope. She’s going to be the worst one. I’m going to tell Katie and Brit next. They’re going to be bad enough. I might save Laura for another day.” Might? Definitely will.

“You know I’m here to listen if you need me. I’ve had enough past relationships go sideways to know how to shut up and listen,” Belinda said jokingly.

“That’s one of the many reasons why I love you. Thanks for being a good friend and putting up with me being mopey at work.”

One down. Though Belinda was the easiest person on her list to tell, Amy still felt a sense of accomplishment from the call. On to the next ones.

Amy: You guys free for a video chat sometime soon?

Brit: Now.

Katie: Yeah, now.

Yikes. I thought I had some time to get my thoughts together. Amy sighed and got her laptop. She curled up in her favorite spot on the couch and called the girls.

“Where have you been?” Katie demanded at the same time as Brit said, “Did something happen with Drew? ”

“Everyone, chill. The answer to both questions is that I broke up with Drew.”

Her friends' faces showed shock.

“So, did he go to jail?” Katie asked.

“Yep.”

Katie and Brit gasped.

“For what? How long?” Brit demanded.

“Was he mad you knew?” Katie pushed.

Their questions were fast and spoken over each other.

“Do we need a virtual talking stick? Quiet. I’ll tell you everything.” And she did. Down to the last detail, since the “detectives” would want closure on all open items from their investigation.

“But that’s not closure at all,” Brit whined. “You still don’t know the crime or why he said it was B.S.”

Katie looked conflicted.

“What?” Amy asked her.

“I don’t get why that wasn’t enough. Why didn’t you just ask him what happened? He made a good point about not lying to you.”

I don’t need this.

“Katie, you weren’t there. It wasn’t a situation that could be escalated. Unfortunately, I came in, guns blazing, and left the same way.

“Can’t you apologize?” Brit offered.

“There isn’t a chance he’d accept it.”

“How do you know?” Brit questioned.

Am I on trial? “I just do. Okay, thanks for listening to me. I need to get going,” Amy said brusquely.

The others nodded and said their goodbyes, which were partly cut off by Amy ending the call.

Amy hadn’t handled that well and felt a little bad about it. She was still feeling defensive and directing her anger at herself and others. Though she wasn’t ready for a lecture from her sister, Amy felt a little more confident with what had happened .

Part of living without Drew would be getting back to her life. She took a shower and got dressed in a casual outfit. She needed to get out of the apartment and get some groceries. Even if she had wanted all the delivery food in her fridge, it was long gone after her tantrum and subsequent cleanup.

Armed with her grocery totes, Amy walked to Whole Foods. She was a little nervous that she’d run into Drew while out, but she understood that it was bound to happen at some point since they lived in the same neighborhood. Every tall blonde man she saw made her gasp with fear. She heard a man with a soft Southern accent and ducked behind a display of coconut water. She probably looked suspicious to anyone watching her bob and weave throughout the store aisles as she kept having phantom Drew sightings.

To Amy’s relief, she made it back home without an encounter with the real Drew. I should have a plan for the possibility of bumping into him.

She was exhausted from the effort of going out in public but trusted Mystic Natasha’s advice to keep clearing her head and getting to a point where she could judge her situation objectively. And to do that, Amy needed her surroundings back in order.

While her sheets were drying, Amy dusted and vacuumed her apartment. I’ve been a pig the last few weeks. Who would’ve thought I had that in me? It was feeling better in there already. Amy’s mind was getting back in order as her home did.

With the apartment cleaned and feeling a sense of satisfaction, Amy finally sat down with a bowl of soup and some crackers, the only thing she could talk herself into eating, and got caught up on her social media and emails. She shook her head in wonder, seeing 33 unread emails. I wonder if that’s still my lucky number. She swiped away most of them and dealt with the few that weren’t spam. She opened her Instagram and saw that she had 33 notifications.

“Yeah, yeah. I notice you, Universe. What exactly do you want me to do?” she said aloud .

Oh, the Universe is being quiet now.

Amy made her bed and smiled slightly in satisfaction. It felt nice to have washed Drew out of her sheets. If only she could run her brain through the heavy-duty cycle, too.
