Chapter 7

Evan

Holden walked out in a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt and approached the sofa. I was lying down and reading, but I immediately pulled my legs up to make room. “I can go read in the bedroom if you want some privacy.”

He shook his head and then sat at the far end of the couch. “No, I’m fine. I was gonna watch a show or start a movie before bed.” He looked over at me. “Will the TV disturb you?”

“Not at all.” I sat up and curled my body into a ball at the other end of the couch. “I love TV. I didn’t have a lot of time to watch it at home, but it’s my favorite way to pass time when I’m alone.”

“Yeah, it’s definitely a good time waster.” He smirked. “What’s your favorite way to pass time when you’re not alone?”

I wondered if his innuendo was intentional or not, but I decided to finally go with the truth. “Mostly I work, and there are always a bunch of elves in the woodshop around the clock. At home, I usually just make a light meal and then go to sleep. I don’t usually take weekends off, so I literally just build toys all day, every day.”

“Cool.” He picked up the remote and turned on the TV. “Have you seen Grimm?”

I felt my face scrunch up in disdain. “No, what’s that? It sounds scary.”

Holden smiled as he hit the play button. “It’s not too scary. It’s a series about fairy tale monsters coming to life in a little town in the Pacific Northwest. They’re usually up to no good, but it’s pretty entertaining.”

“Okay.” I tucked the blanket around my arms and legs, creating a little cocoon of safety while we watched what had to be one of the most terrifying shows to ever exist. “Sounds good.”

I was right, and Holden was wrong. The monsters were scary, and they liked to kill innocent beings. Probably beings like elves. I was brave for the first episode and agreed to a second one. But that one was worse, and I felt myself leaning closer and closer to Holden’s body with each passing scene. Fangs were bared, claws came out, and creatures I couldn’t ever imagine being in my nightmares appeared right on the screen in front of me.

“Ah!” I scrunched my eyes closed any time a Hexenbiest appeared, but when an eyeball exploded, I dove into Holden’s side and buried my face between his shoulder and the back of the couch.

He chuckled and lifted his arm all the way up so I kinda rolled into his lap. “I guess this can be a little on the scary side.”

I pressed my face into his firm chest, taking a whiff of his pine cone and campfire scent as his arm lowered across my back, and he held me in place. “Sorry. I’m not used to such dark entertainment.”

“No apologies needed.” He hit the remote and turned the TV off. “It’s getting pretty late. You ready for bed?”

“I should sleep.” I tried to hold back a yawn that came out anyway. “And if I wake up screaming, it’s probably because a Hexenbiest is chewing up my eyeballs in my sleep.”

Holden laughed and pulled me tighter to his side in a hug. “Sorry about that. If you get scared and need my wolf to guard you, just call out and we’ll be there.”

That was the best idea he’d had all night. “Don’t be surprised if I do.”

After saying good night, I took a quick shower and then slipped on my one-piece flannel pajama set. Holden was in his room right above me, and I could hear his heavy footsteps as he walked around before the creak of his bed announced he was now in it.

My eyelids were heavy, and underneath the thick quilts on the bed, I quickly drifted off to sleep. But instead of monster-filled dreams, I dreamt of a large brown wolf curled up beside me in the bed. Protecting me from any elf enforcers who might be looking to take me back to the North Pole or make me a doll forever.

The wind outside the cabin was howling, which made the dream shift to the wolf outside, howling up at a full moon before running down the driveway toward the road.

“Holden!” I called out to him, running as fast as my short legs could take me, but I was no match for the muscular wolf in pursuit of something. “Stay here.”

A warm tongue dragged up the side of my head and then a hundred pounds of fur and muscle landed right beside me on the bed. I opened my eyes and saw Holden’s wolf on top of the quilts, facing the door as if actually watching it for threats.

“You’re here to protect me?” I reached behind his ears and scratched.

He looked at me and whined.

As if I could speak wolf, I knew what he meant. “Thank you, Holden. For everything.”

Falling back to sleep was easy once I knew I was safe and protected.

When my eyes opened up again, Holden was back in his skin. All of his skin. And nothing else.

I’d gotten a peek of his naked body as he was walking away. This time, he was facing me and the large erection resting on the bed just inches from my hand was beautiful. I’d never seen a man’s body other than my own, and I couldn’t look away. It was at least twice the size of mine, and I didn’t consider myself to be particularly under-endowed. But size was relative, and on my small frame, four inches soft suddenly seemed tiny. I gained another inch when I was erect, but it was still nothing compared to the massive cock Holden had.

Afraid I’d get caught gawking at him, I closed my eyes and turned slightly into the pillow to keep me from being tempted to peek again. Besides, I didn’t need to open my eyes to see him in his naked glory. That vision was burned into my brain for all time. Even if I did get taken back to the village or turned into a figurine, it would be worth it to know I was so close to perfection. Anytime I needed inspiration in the shower or to relieve some of my stress, I now had a mind photo that would always be with me.

I slept for a while longer, and when I woke up, Holden and his wolf were gone.

That wasn’t surprising. He might not have even realized that his wolf brought him to me when we were sleeping. I should have expected him to be gone. What I didn’t expect was that having an alpha wolf physically so close to me all night would trigger a heat cycle. I’d only had one in the past because I wasn’t one of the mating elves who was expected to add to our population. My bloodline wasn’t pure enough for that. I wasn’t discouraged from mating, but I’d never had any suitors, and it was easier to just work all the time and not think too hard about the fact that I was a twenty-five-year-old virgin than to make an effort to meet someone.

Until now.

Until I left behind everything and everyone I’d ever known to potentially find a mate who would want me for the rest of his days.
