Oooh you guys thought of everything!

I had grown up with a little brother. Someone I could count on to mess up my hair when he walked by, fight me over the last few chips in the bag (or eat the whole bag himself), surprise me with his tenderness right when I needed it most, or make me laugh so hard my abs got sore.

Now, I was about to have sisters. In a matter of hours.

I wasn’t sure what having sisters looked like. But, for today, it appeared sisters brought champagne and orange juice, fancy curling irons, and makeup to your house. They squeezed into my cramped bathroom with its tiny porcelain sink and lacy curtains to teach me the powers of a good face primer and how to properly curl my hair.

“I grew up in awe of your hair,” I said as Jenna twirled a strand of my hair around the curling iron. “Now, I get to see how the magic happens.”

“It’s taken years to hone my craft.” Jenna winked, her own blonde curls bouncy and shiny. “You can always give me a call if you’re in a real hair emergency. You know Sarah does.”

“I think I relied so long on Jenna’s skills that I never developed my own,” Sarah said. “I like your fluffy pink bathroom towels.” She patted one hanging on the towel rack beside her.

“Thanks,” I said, taking in the space. “I can’t believe everything is getting packed up.”

“We’ll be here to help when you get back,” Sarah promised, reaching out and giving my arm a squeeze.

“I think we need some music or something. Put on your Christmas playlist, Sarah?” Jenna said.

Sarah opened her phone and after a few clicks, Ella Fitzgerald’s “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve” crooned from the speakers. “This is totally your song with Jordan,” she said, returning to the outlay of makeup products.

I sipped my mimosa, listening along to the song, so grateful I hadn’t given up my one little chance.
