LANDON

Freshman Year, Move-in day, Fall Semester

She came out of nowhere.

I’m not sure where the SUV came from, but it rear-ends me.

Tires screech, rubber burns against the asphalt, a loud thud echoes in my ears, and a sharp static grey tints my mind.

The force of the impact causes my seat belt to lock, holding my body in place, but my head jerks backward, hitting hard against the headrest, then it forcefully jerks forward.

“Fuck,” I groan, reaching for the button and pushing it to release the belt. Rubbing the back of my neck, I open the door and get out.

A throbbing, dull ache works its way around my skull as I trudge over to the person in the white Range Rover.

The front of her pristine—and what I’m assuming is a brand-new—SUV looks unscathed, not a single dent or scratch. My black 1970 Dodge Charger, on the other hand, has a sizeable dent on the back bumper, and the paint—fuck, I had just gotten a fresh coat.

Shifting away from the accident, I peer up at the blonde girl. She’s still sitting inside, clutching the steering wheel with both hands. She stares unblinking out the windshield in a catatonic state with her lips slightly parted.

“Hey.” I cautiously stand by the driver’s door, catching a glimpse inside to make sure she’s not hurt. Except for her blanched face and red-rimmed eyes, she looks okay. “Are you all right?”

That snaps her out of her daze. The colour surfaces back on her face, and shock morphs into anger.

“You!” she yells, removing her belt, and climbs out. “What the fuck did you do?”

Snowy white and electric sapphire swirl in my head.

I blink once, her outburst momentarily disconcerting me.

“Mate—”

“I’m not your fucking mate! Look at my car! Don’t you know how a stop sign works?” Her nostrils flare and electric sapphire eyes dilate, shot with adrenaline. “Or do you not know what it looks like? Red, shaped like an octagon!”

Her gaze carries over to my car, staring at it with a look I know too well. Entitlement and superiority exude from it, and a condescending sneer curls on her upper lip.

Breathing in deeply, I glide my tongue along my top teeth.

“You must not know how it works because I had the right of way. I was already going when you hit me.”

It’s common sense, but it seems she lost what little bit she had or never had any to begin with.

“I had the right of way!” she scoffs, pointing at her chest.

Fuck being nice. My neck is hurting, my head is painfully throbbing, and the car I spent too much money to restore is damaged.

“You incompetent fuck. I had the right of way. I was here first. Get your head out of your arse and pay attention to where you’re going.” I attempt to keep my voice calm and steady, but any second now, I know I’m going to lose my shit.

“Fuck you!” the blonde yells, standing in front of me, angling her chin up.

“Fuck me? Fuck you!” I echo back, staring down at her.

I swear once we get this sorted out, I hope I never see her again.
