Chapter 3

Pry

"Are you even going to do any work today?"

Envy was rarely a happy demon, so I just ignored him. He wasn't going to do any work either, but Envy liked to keep on his high horse whenever he could. It was just his nature.

It might also have something to do with getting him to pour me a whiskey at 10am. Working was not one of his favorite things, and it was rather early. Not that I cared.

Club Midnight was doing well; better than any of us could have hoped. Not only did it give the chance to keep order amongst the supernaturals, but it also gave an easy spot to corrupt humans. If only the paperwork did itself, then I wouldn't have to spend so much time on the boring bits. It had been a week since the flyers had been distributed, but I was thinking I'd made a mistake to get Acedia to do it. They could be scatterbrained with the day-to-day things.

Finding someone to fill the position was going to be a long shot, no matter what. Club Midnight might be the hottest Kink club this side of the equator, but the backbone of it ran on a lot of luck.

Luck and favours. Demons loved to deal in favours. And my family and I were eternal masters at it. If I knew who my sire was, I was sure they would be proud. Another demon trait we had no issues in dealing with.

Even though I hadn’t asked for a second, Envy plonked a drink on the small table, splashing the scotch over the surface. Scowling at him did little to dissuade my shit of a brother, and he simply scowled back.

"If you're going to sit here, do your fucken job." Obviously just my presence in his domain had Envy on edge.

"Very well, little brother." I was not happy with the nagging and drew amusement from Envy's frustrated reaction. If he was going to be childish, I had no problems meeting him in the same space. Still, I was glad when Envy huffed and stomped, frustrated, back towards the bar. He disappeared into the space behind it, and I could go over the paperwork in peace.

That said, as I looked down at the sheets of bills, stock, and insurance, I was beyond bored. Dealing with Envy's antics had been a delightful distraction. But it just made me realise how important it was to find someone who could take on these responsibilities before they were forgotten.

Another problem with being a demon, and especially seven living in such close proximity; it was easy to forget about the day-to-day matters. While I didn't really want Club Midnight to fold, unless we could find someone, someone who wasn't a demon, I feared we would tear it apart. Just by the very nature of who we were and how we worked. Club Midnight would not last long and everything would just fold.

The flyers would attract someone useful, if Acedia had seen to their delivery. That was also a hard thing to gauge. Using the internet would have made things easier, but it would have also made it impossible to filter the people who would apply. Imbued with a bit of demon blood from each of them, plus the magic of a warlock who’d owed them a favour. Only those who might be worthy would see them.

Now that I thought of it, it was likely the reason no one had applied yet. Finding a human to match all seven of us might be an impossible feat. Just one more thing to be frustrated about.

When I was halfway through Envy's second, and watered down whisky, my mobile rang with some unknown number. I stared at it for a few seconds. I could almost see the swirl of fate coursing over the device. It made me smile; I was sure this was going to be our successful applicant. I couldn't wait to tell my siblings we might have found the one we needed.

"Welcome to Club Midnight, where all your pleasurable dreams become reality."
