I hold on to Lilith’s hand as the ultrasound tech moves the probe. We’re officially at twenty-two weeks and out of the woods, so to speak.
The last two months have been a whirlwind of surprises.
Joao proposed to Eve, and she accepted.
Lilith graduated with her degree after finishing via online schooling.
The twins are thriving in kindergarten.
Isadora is walking.
Raquel is crawling all over the place.
I look at my wife’s stomach.
The biggest surprise has been this pregnancy. We found out at our last appointment that we’re expecting twins. Apparently, one of our little ones was hiding behind the other.
And today we find out the gender.
“Okay, here we go. Baby A is a boy.” She moves the probe. “And Baby B is also a boy. Congratulations.”
The tech helps Lilith wipe the gel from her stomach and then slips out of the room, giving us privacy.
I pull Lilith into my arms, kissing her. She grins up at me as tears fill her eyes.
“Clara is going to be so happy that Diego is going to have brothers to play with.”
“And how is Momma feeling?”
“So happy. You?”
“Happy.” I kiss her. “More in love with you than I thought possible.”
“Same.” She stands. “Let’s go home, Daddy, so I can show you just how happy I am.”
There was a time not too long ago when I thought that I didn’t deserve this kind of love. I thought I would be better off alone. I was wrong. And this wonderful woman showed me I could have it all with her at my side.
I bring her hand to my lips, kissing her wedding band that matches my own.
“You have it wrong, minha vida. ”
“I do?”
“Daddy wants to take you home so I can show you just how happy I am.” I lean in, brushing my lips against hers. “And practice making our next baby.”
She laughs. “We’re going for eight, aren’t we?”
“We’re going for as many as you want.”
I mean it. Her wish is my command.
My phone rings and I see it’s the hospital. They can wait.
For now, I’m taking my wife home. And we’re not leaving our bed for the rest of the day.
