CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

SADIE

“I’m going to the bank in the morning to go over finances, and when I get back, we can go over?—”

My brother walks in.

“Afternoon, ladies,” he greets us and then hugs me. I’m standing by the register with Brooke. “I think I’ll take a half dozen lemon bars, please.”

He grins, but it’s different from normal.

I cross my arms and lean my hip to the counter. “I made you a batch two days ago. Did you already eat them all?”

He makes a yikes face and hands Brooke his debit card.

I glare a little harder, but he has no reaction to it, and he doesn’t say a word.

“Later,” he finally says and heads for the door. “Oh,”—he snaps his fingers—“I almost forgot this.” He walks back to me and hands me a note, just like the one Miles brought me about twenty minutes ago. This one reads Brother’s Best Friend Brandy.

“Seriously, what is this?” I snap.

Linc just tosses his arms up and shrugs .

“I’m not the one you need to ask.”

“I’m not?—”

He’s gone before I can finish.

I march to the door and watch my brother duck into the space next door.

What the hell are they doing over there?

I’ll admit that I’m curious, but not enough to face Hudson.
