EVA
Six months later
Livvy looks over at me with a wink. “How are things in the house? Feeling settled finally?”
I think back to last night and exactly how Anders and I celebrated the new bed that had been delivered. He had me screaming his name in pleasure more than once.
“It feels like home.” I have to blink a few times at the sudden tingle of tears as the truth of that washes over me. Because this place feels like home. The small town we live in, the people we work with, and of course, having Livvy and Max so close by.
We all do whatever it takes to help each other out. We take care of our own here.
I don’t have to explain that to Livvy. She understands me like the best friend she is. We’ve both lost a lot in our lives, but we’ve also gained so much.
“Good, I'm glad.” She grins and looks over her shoulder as she heads toward the office door. “Still on for dinner tonight?”
I nod. “Looking forward to it.”
She waves and steps out into the hall. I return my attention to the calendar of events I’m trying to plan, but the door opening again, makes me shake my head.
“Forget something?” I ask, expecting it to be Livvy.
“I could never forget you, sweetheart,” says the voice that still makes my stomach clench with excitement. “In fact, I’m here to take you to lunch.”
“Lunch? But we're having dinner with Livvy and Max tonight.”
“We are. But I need you all to myself for a bit first.”
I save the changes I’ve made and push back my chair. “Let me grab my purse and we'll go. But I can't be gone long. I’ve got to finish this planning for Livvy.”
“Whatever you want,” he says, hands in his pockets as he waits for me. The man is every bit as muscled now as he was living up on the mountain, and it’s still all hard earned. The man is always moving, working, building something we need. And I benefit every time he takes his clothes off.
I cross over to the closet and grab my purse, slipping the strap over my shoulder and turning around.
Only to find Anders down on one knee, a deep blue velvet ring box in the palm of his hand. My mouth falls open at the sight.
“Eva, my sweet little mountain rescue, you’ve saved me from what I thought my life was going to be. Lonely and isolated, hiding away from everyone. You showed me that with love, anything is possible, even getting a surly ex-soldier down off his mountain. Will you be my wife?”
My heart pounds in my chest and my hands are shaking. The tears I pushed back earlier swell again, and this time, I don’t try to hold them back. They slip free and roll down my cheeks as I cross the short distance between us and drop down to my knees in front of him.
“Yes, Anders. Yes. I will very happily be your wife!”
He kisses me and slips the ring onto my finger. I’m surprised that it fits, like it was sized for me.
Cheers and applause at the office door make us pull away from each other. Max and Livvy are standing at the open door, and Max raises his arms up like he’s celebrating a win. “Told you she’d say yes, man!”
“Congratulations, you two,” says Livvy, even as she pokes Max with her elbow. “We’ll leave you both for now, but I’ll be ready to start talking wedding plans at dinner tonight, Eva. This is going to be so much fun.”
They close the door and we’re alone, although I'm sure that the whole town will hear the news about our engagement within the next half hour.
“Still want to go to lunch?” Anders asks me as he stands and offers me his hand.
He pulls me up and wraps his arm around my waist as I lean my head against his chest. He’s solid and warm, and joy bubbles up in me. “I definitely want lunch, but I hope you’re prepared. Everyone’s going to want to look at this ring.”
I hold it out, admiring the way color spills from the facets as the sunlight from the window hits it. My voice catches as I say, “It’s so beautiful, Anders. Just perfect.”
“Of course it is, sweetheart. It was made for you.”
He takes my other hand and leads me out of the office, the first steps toward our new life together.
It hits me that I’ve never been happier.
