Clarissa
I twirled in my new dress and watched Sable’s pants tent with approval.
“You think it will do?”
“I think you should take it off. But if you insist on being clothed, then it will do.”
“It’s usually polite to go to public events clothed.”
“Do we really have to go, though?”
“It’s our engagement party!”
He grumbled, but I could tell he was trying not to smile. He’d put on some smart pants but had drawn the line at a shirt.
We arrived late to the party, as Sable had insisted on looking under the dress for some flimsy excuse or other and then made use of his tongue. There was a cheer when we walked in and friends and family surrounded us. After about 10 minutes, I thought I’d managed to hug everyone and had a glass of wine shoved in my hand. As I pretended to sip at it, Uncle Rez wandered over and nodded at it.
“Should you be drinking that?”
“I don’t know what you mean.”
He gave a pointed deep sniff and then pulled me into a hug and then shook Sable’s hand.
“Congratulations!”
“Thank you.”
I resisted the urge to pat my stomach where the small bump was forming.
“Is it a secret?”
“Yes, just for another couple of weeks.”
“I’m so happy for you. Your parents and Cat would have been so happy, too.”
We both teared up slightly. But before we could say anything else, Delly and Lyla appeared and pulled me to the dance floor. I waved at Sable, but he shook his head. Dancing wasn’t really his thing, but he did enjoy watching me. I knew he’d be storing up the memories for later, when he’d tell me which bits he liked the most while he tied me up with his belts.
It was a beautiful whirlwind of a night. Sable had moved to Graybury, setting up a separate branch of the Appalachian Bounty Hunters. But his colleagues had all traveled here for the party. The boisterous Sasquatch, Kiy, joined us dancing with a lot of enthusiasm. I suspected he was showing off for Delly, who he’d been watching all night. Sable’s parents even hit the dance floor after a couple of drinks. They were clearly still very much in love, and I hoped we could follow in their footsteps.
By the time we went home, I was exhausted but happy. My mate and I had our wedding to look forward to and a baby. Plus, we had the best friends and family in the world. A whole heap of people who would love us and our little one. And we had each other. What more could we have ever hoped for?
The End.
