CHAPTER 6

“ A hem.” A discreet cough from the doorway pulled the two men away from each other. But his father didn’t turn towards the interruption immediately. Instead, he placed his hand on Connor’s shoulder and squeezed. “I love you, son. I’m sorry it took me so long to tell you that, and for us to have this talk. I guess all I can say is that both our women are a damn sight savvier than we are.”

Connor looked towards the door to find Laurel, and a trim, older, dark-haired woman standing there together.

“Why do I feel like you had something to do with this?” he asked, walking over to Laurel and pulling her into a hug. “Do you need to be spanked for meddling again?” he murmured in her ear so nobody else could hear, before kissing her forehead.

Laurel drew back and looked at him with wide eyes, shaking her head, but there was a pinch of guilt there, too.

Then the other woman stepped forward. “Hello, Connor. I’m so pleased to meet you finally,” she said, holding out her hand. “I’m Barbara.”

“My fiancée and my better half,” his father added, his features softening as he gazed at the woman.

Well damn. After all these years, it looked like Connor Griffin Senior had fallen, hook, line, and sinker. Connor was surprised to realise he was pleased; happy for his dad’s new-found happiness. Barbara wasn’t what he expected. She wasn’t some young dolly-bird or a trophy-wife after bagging a rich husband. She was tall, with a rather matronly build, and had a no-nonsense presence about her, and Connor could see how she would keep his father in line.

He found he liked her already. Even though they’d only just met, he had a good feeling about this.

It also didn’t escape his notice that Laurel seemed a lot more familiar with the woman than a first meeting would imply. But he’d get to the bottom of that.

Would it be bad form for her to walk down the aisle tomorrow with a thoroughly spanked ass?

No, Connor decided, a grin spreading over his face. He didn’t think it would.
