CHAPTER 6
“ W hy do I get the impression there’s more to all this? Did something else happen with James?”
Luanna knew Logan would ask. She’d always known Logan suspected there was more to her decision than she’d told him.
“Do you promise not to get mad?” she asked.
It was the wrong thing to say. His whole countenance took on a dark mien. “That implies you think I will. And if that’s the case, you can expect there to be a spanking sometime in your future for keeping something significant from me,” he ground out.
“You’re not helping me want to tell you this, you know,” she muttered, wondering just how much trouble she was going to be in.
“Sorry.” Logan stopped his agitated pacing and came to sit down next to her on their bed. They had spoken to Danny. Reassured him. Asked him to think about how he felt and what he wanted. He’d be eighteen soon and had his final exams coming up for school. James had already accepted, as part of their legal custody agreement, that no visits would interfere with Danny’s study time. And because of the distance, Danny only saw his father one weekend a month. They could get away with missing a few if Danny really didn’t want to go. After that, it would be up to him.
“I’m sorry too,” Luanna capitulated. “You’re right. I shouldn’t have kept this from you. But at the time… well, there was a lot going on.”
“You need to tell me what happened, Luanna,” Logan replied, his gaze serious as it captured hers.
She took a deep breath and told him.
“Motherfucker!” The curse reverberated around the room, and Luanna eyed the door cautiously, worried Danny would hear and come to find out what had happened. “I’ll fucking kill him.”
Logan stalked across the floor and back, his agitation apparent in every muscle of his body, every movement he made.
“Logan, it was only a kiss!” Luanna reasoned. She hadn’t kept it from him through guilt. James had surprised her, and she’d pushed him away. She knew Logan trusted her completely, but she’d also known he would get totally possessive about this.
“I can’t believe he had the nerve to put his hands on you. His mouth! He touched what’s mine! I’ll decimate that bloody company and ruin the lot of them.”
Luanna stood and stopped him in his tracks. “No! This is exactly why I didn’t tell you,” she argued. She’d always known what Logan’s default reaction was going to be. “I have enough guilt over all of this, without knowing my actions destroyed the lives of all the people who work for Fulfords. He’s the biggest employer for miles. There aren’t any other jobs for all those people to go out and find once you’ve finished demolishing their employment prospects.”
Logan, his eyes wild, stood there dragging his fingers through his shoulder-length hair. Luanna took a step closer and pressed her hand to his heaving chest. “Please?” she implored. “There must be another way.”
