Chapter 19

Chapter Nineteen

Maddie didn’t want to go into details on why she had another shitty day. It would just get her blood pressure spiking again. She tracked down Romeo so he could get her blood rushing, not that asshole Roger.

Her boss was such a dick, and she was tired of telling herself to hang on because doing so would pay off in the end.

If she only knew when that “end” would be, dealing with him might be a little easier. Only, it seemed too far off in the distance. Worse, there was no guarantee staying would ever pay off. The fingernails she was using to cling to the faith that it would were starting to rip off.

“Do you mind if I get some water?” She glanced over her shoulder to see him push away from the door and stalk toward where she stood by the kitchen.

She could really use a beer instead, but her stomach was still twisted in knots from dealing with Roger and his undeserved cruel insults.

“Only got shit from the tap,” he said. “Nothin’ fancy. ”

“That’s fine.” She hoped sipping some water would help settle her stomach.

With a single nod, he grabbed a glass out of the cabinet and filled it with ice and water from the refrigerator door dispenser. She hoped the glass was clean. She assumed he didn’t do his own dishes since he had sweet butts to do his bidding.

While she waited, she fingered a piece of mail sitting on the kitchen counter addressed to a Marvin.

Did Romeo get someone else’s mail by accident? “Who’s Marvin?”

When he didn’t respond, she glanced up. His expression said it all. “Hold on. Is that you? Is your real name Marvin?” She giggled, then leaned closer to read the rest of the name. “Marvin Lee Carter… The third?”

“Nothin’ wrong with that name. It’s a family name.”

“Of course there’s nothing wrong with it.” Only, it was hard to look at Romeo and see a Marvin. In fact, Romeo was as far from a Marvin as one could get. “Why don’t you use it?” She rolled her lips inward, trying not to grin like a lunatic.

“You know why,” he grumbled, placing the glass of ice water on the counter in front of her.

She danced away from him, still laughing. “I’m calling you Marvin from now on.”

“The fuck you will.”

“What will you do if I do?”

“Spank your ass.”

She slid to a stop and spun to face him keeping the kitchen island between them to stay out of his reach. “No, you won’t.”

“Wanna bet? ”

Her eyebrow rose. It had to be an empty threat. He wouldn’t dare. “I’ll bet.”

“It’s a bet you’re gonna lose.”

“We’ll see about that, Marvin.”

“Madison,” he growled.

“Oh, now I know you’re serious since you used my full first name.” She shivered with fake fear before sticking out her tongue at him. “So scared.”

“Should be.”

This was what she needed tonight. Some teasing and laughter. Someone who could take a joke without getting bent out of shape.

Romeo might act like he was annoyed with her learning his birth name but in truth, his eyes said otherwise.

“Do your brothers know your real name?”

He shrugged.

“So, they don’t? Holy shit, do I actually have something to use as blackmail against you?”

“Got something you want from me that I ain’t willin’ to give?”

She pursed her lips and considered him. “You’d give me anything I asked?” Of course not, she was only playing with him. She didn’t expect anything but sex from him. He owed her nothing and she owed him the same.

“Within reason. Can’t give you a fuckin’ million dollars or a Ferrari. But can give you a ride somewhere.” He tipped his head toward the full glass. “Or a drink. Maybe some free advice. Can’t guarantee that advice won’t suck ass. And if you want an orgasm or two, can give you that.”

That he could. “The last one is why I’m here.”

“No shit.” He jerked his chin toward the untouched water. “Can you manage to carry that upstairs? ”

If the stairs were normal, yes, but his were far from that. “I wouldn’t risk it.”

“Then drink your water ‘cause I’m about to make you thirsty all over again.”

“Promises, promises,” she murmured, snagging the glass off the counter. When she finished downing a third of it, she noticed him staring at her. “What?”

“Nothin’.”

She was lying when she gave him that exact answer earlier. Now he was doing the same.

When she licked her lips—on purpose—his eyes followed the path of her tongue. Despite the water, her throat quickly went dry. “I think we need to go upstairs now.”

“Good fuckin’ idea. Otherwise, gonna fuck you on that counter and you won’t gotta worry about climbin’ those fuckin’ stairs.”

Not only did a wildfire sweep through her and land between her legs, her cheeks even became heated. She couldn’t be blushing, could she? She pressed a hand to one.

She certainly was.

Why did this man turn her on so much? It didn’t make sense. He was everything she didn’t want. Mainly, a biker in an MC. Hell , not just a biker but an MC president and one with no filter at that.

A man with no fucks to give at all.

But for the next hour or two, she also would have zero fucks to give. Tomorrow was another day to worry about what waited for her at work.

After waking up alone, Romeo headed downstairs with disappointment weighing on him. Maddie must’ve slipped out after he drifted off. Somehow, she managed to leave without waking him. Not an easy feat.

Her stealthy escape proved she only wanted one thing from him.

She had said it, but most women said shit and either didn’t mean what they said, or the meaning went far deeper than their words. Of fucking course, men were just supposed to figure that shit out on their own. Like a mind reader.

And if they didn’t, they got nothing but hell for it.

It was one reason why he had no intentions to have any woman wear his cut. They were too damn confusing.

Sometimes even annoying.

Someone needed to write an instruction manual. Though, if he had to be honest, he doubted men would read it.

While he should be happy about not having to kick her out of his bed for lingering too long, it also bugged him for a reason he didn’t want to dig into.

The sex with Maddie was fucking great. But he’d had plenty of great sex before and never cared if the woman left immediately after. Actually, if a woman didn’t leave on her own, he would encourage her departure. Even assist with it.

Bottom line, when he was done, they were done.

Once they were out of sight, they were out of mind. At least until they landed in his bed again.

But not all of them got that privilege, especially if the sex sucked.

Or they never shut the fuck up.

Or they were catching feelings.

Or made demands.

But none of that applied to the woman who snuck out last night. Maybe that was why it bugged him so damn much.

It also bugged the shit out of him that she was keeping the issues she was having at work so damn close to her chest. He even asked her again after her third orgasm what the problem was.

And again, she refused to say.

Maybe he needed to find out for himself.

That was what good allies did for each other, right? Sure it was.

Since Magnum was so damn dead-set about not fucking up their strong alliance with the Fury, he couldn’t possibly have a problem with Romeo helping them out.

He should find out where she worked and go scope out the situation. Because whenever he asked Maddie for details, she blew it off.

While he figured Magnum knew where she worked, Romeo couldn’t ask him. Not without starting a shitstorm. But he did have someone he could call. Someone with the expert skills to locate anyone anywhere.

Someone on a team capable of hacking into databases—even the government’s—and not get caught.

Hunter would have no problem finding out Maddie’s place of employment and her home address. He would also keep his mouth shut about Romeo’s request.

He would only owe one of Diesel’s Shadows a favor in exchange. Whatever that ended up being might be worth it.

“Maddie, your new patient is here,” she heard called out.

Her new patient? She should’ve looked at her schedule closer.

She weaved through the equipment on her way to the front of the building where the receptionist greeted anyone walking through the door. Maribeth also checked them in for their appointment and made sure they filled out their forms completely and correctly.

The second Maddie saw her new “patient,” she almost tripped over her own feet.

What the hell? Since when was Romeo an athlete needing physical therapy? His sport of choice was sex. And maybe drunken fist fights. He certainly didn’t suffer from tennis elbow or a torn Achilles tendon from running track.

The only running the Knights president probably did was from the law. And he wasn’t using his legs for that, she was damn sure he would have his powerful sled between his thighs.

So, why the hell was Romeo here at Smith’s?

She glanced over her shoulder to make sure Roger wasn’t lurking around. While she didn’t see him, that didn’t mean he wasn’t watching. He was a sneaky bastard. She had no doubt he watched the security cameras, waiting for someone to do something he didn’t like. He looked for any excuse to write someone up or degrade them verbally.

Because of that, she had to treat Romeo as she would any other patient. She gritted her teeth and kept going.

When she got to the front where he waited, she ignored the grinning man and asked Maribeth, “Did he get all the appropriate forms filled out?”

The receptionist held up a clipboard. She took it and glanced at the top sheet. “Old school, huh?” She lifted her gaze to meet Romeo’s.

The fucker was now smirking.

“You do know you could’ve filled these out online, right?” And saved a tree or two.

“Mr. Carter made a last-minute appointment,” Maribeth explained like Romeo couldn’t speak for himself .

Maddie turned enough to make sure Maribeth couldn’t see her eyes rolling. “Come with me, Mr. Carter.” Not waiting to see if he followed, she strode toward her “office.”

Truthfully, calling it an office was a joke since it was about the size of a linen closet. It barely fit a desk—half the size of a regular one—and two chairs. Luckily, they all used tablets to keep their patients’ files and notes. Fitting a file cabinet in her space would be impossible.

Not that she was in her office often. She tried to stay out on the floor as much as possible so Roger couldn’t catch her in there and be an asshole behind closed doors. If he was going to be a dick, Maddie wanted everyone to be a witness.

With Romeo’s bulk, as soon as they stepped into her office, it felt even tighter than it was in reality.

The biker was not a small man. Anywhere. He might not be quite as bulky as Magnum, or even Diesel, the DAMC’s enforcer, but he was damn close.

“Close the door,” she told him. After leaning back against her desk, she pointed to the chair in front of her. “Sit.”

No surprise that mischief filled his eyes as he took a seat. His fingers “accidentally” brushed against her thigh and caused a shiver to shoot through her.

She shook her head. “Really?” What was he up to?

He shrugged. “Kept askin’ what problems you’re havin’ here. Wouldn’t tell me, so came to see for myself.”

She sighed. “It’s not your problem, Rome. To be clear, I didn’t ask for your help.” At least help in any form other than a little sex.

Or, preferably, a lot of sex.

His nostrils flared and his expression turned serious. “Maddie, you belong to the Fury. The Fury’s our ally. That means if you got a problem, we all got a problem.”

She was tired of the ally excuse. “Bullshit.”
