CHAPTER 6

“I can’t believe you did that.”
“Did what, my sweet?” Baz props himself on one elbow to regard me from his side of the bed.
“Threaten a child. A baby.”
“Ah. That.” He rolls onto his back. “The point is, San Antonio did believe it.”
“He won’t let it drop. You do know that? He’ll be determined to find her — Rosie, that is. Especially now that he knows about Erin.”
“I’m sure you’re right. Still, he has to locate them first.”
“He’s not an idiot, and her father is a prominent businessman. He’ll track her down easily enough. What if he decides to snatch Erin because he believes he needs to protect her from you? Or even, just because he can. Who knows what he might do?”
“Yes. I thought of that.”
“And still you put her in danger? I thought you were better than that. Don’t you remember how we felt when our little girl went missing?”
“And don’t you remember that San Antonio kidnapped Lily? And you.”
“He let us go. Unharmed.”
“True, and that’s the only reason he’s still breathing. But, as I said, business is business. Still, you might like to take precautions to protect Rosie and Erin, if you feel so strongly about it.”
“Precautions? What precautions?”
“Have a word with Janey. She was a friend of Rosie’s as I recall.”
“Yes, she was. They shared a house once upon a time, when they were both at college.”
“Right, then. To my way of thinking, it would be a good idea if Rosie and Erin relocated to somewhere a bit safer for a while. Somewhere more secure. Like… Caraksay.”
“Caraksay? That island?” I vividly remember the tiny Hebridean stronghold where Mafia boss, Ethan Savage, lives with his family. It’s certainly secure, he’s not wrong there.
“They’d be safe there. Beyond San Antonio’s reach, even if he could work out where they were. Ethan Savage runs a tight ship, no one gets on or off his island without his say-so.”
“He’d never allow it. He doesn’t even know Rosie.” Ethan Savage guards his privacy fiercely, and the security of his family. He doesn’t encourage visitors.
“He knows of her. And that’s where Janey comes in. He’d agree if she asked him.”
“Would he?” I’m not convinced.
“You know he would. There’s not much he wouldn’t do for her.”
“Why don’t you ask her? Or Kris?”
“I suspect Ethan wouldn’t piss on Kris if he was on fire.” He grins. “He might, if he wasn’t. No, it needs to be Janey. I’ll leave that with you, shall I?”
“What? No…”
“Sweet dreams, my darling.” He rolls over and is asleep in seconds.
