CHAPTER 14
Duke
His timing sucked, but boy, was I relieved to see a pizza delivery guy through the peephole.
I adjusted myself, paid him, and brought the food inside. “You’re safe,” I announced. “It was the pizza guy.”
Serena sidled up to me. “Put it down and let me take care of you.”
Juggling the boxes, I checked my watch. “We don’t have enough time. I’ll need time to savor you.”
She blushed and rubbed a tit against my arm. “I bet you could be fast…” Her voice was coy.
My phone rang with my sisters’ ringtone, killing the mood. “Raincheck? I have to take this.”
“You can answer it later,” she suggested, again rubbing my cock through my pants.
“It’s one of my sisters. She won’t stop,” I explained as the song kept playing.
Serena shrugged. “Later, I guess.”
I accepted the call. “Hello, gorgeous.”
Serena smiled and lifted her shirt to flash me her luscious tits. They looked even better than they felt.
“ You’re killing me ,” I mouthed silently.
“Got a minute?” Alice asked.
Serena, the minx, broke out in a full-faced smile. Torturing me was exactly her intention.
With a sigh, I turned away to keep from coming in my pants and set the pizza boxes on the island. “What’s up?”
“Checking in.” My youngest sister had the worst fucking timing.
“What kind did you get us?” Serena asked. She reached for the top box.
I swatted her hand away. “Wait.”
“I hear a woman. You’re with a woman,” Alice stated with obvious glee.
“And you’re a detective now,” I countered.
“I’m famished,” Serena announced, obviously intending my sister to hear.
I tapped the cardboard pile. “It should be a deluxe meat lover’s, a Hawaiian, a simple pepperoni, and a veggie.”
“Is she pretty?” Alice prodded.
Trapped by my long-ago promise, I answered. “Uh-huh.” Complete truth was a commitment I’d made to my sisters when they were young.
Serena pulled two plates from the cupboard.
Alice kept at me. “How pretty?”
“We should talk later,” I told my nosy sister.
“I’ll start with Hawaiian,” Serena announced. She opened the top box and closed it after finding the meat lover’s.
Alice was not one to give up easily. “After you tell me how pretty she is.”
“She’s a client,” I added.
Serena slid the top box off the pile and opened the second.
“So? Tell me… Now,” Alice said.
With no option, I spit it out. “Yes, my client is a very pretty woman.”
Serena’s head jerked up, and a blush formed. Pretty was an understatement.
“Put her on,” Alice demanded.
“No, Alice. Goodbye.” I hung up. “Nosy sister.”
“You think I’m pretty?” Serena sing-songed.
“Reporting the facts.”
She giggled. “Thank you. You’re not so bad yourself.”
Uncomfortable with where this was going, I separated the boxes and located the Hawaiian for her.
She smirked. “This is where you also say thank you.”
I didn’t look up as I slid a slice onto a plate. “Thanks.”
My phone sang the same infernal Shania Twain song as before, announcing a sister again. I glanced at the screen. It wasn’t Alice. “Hello, Emily,” I answered. She lived in Portland, and I didn’t see or hear from her that often.
“I hear you have a pretty girl as a client.” The grapevine had been activated.
“Women are allowed to be clients.” They made up the majority of people looking for protection.
“Does she get to boss you around?” She giggled. “I’d love to watch that.”
“It’s been super nice, Em. Bye now.” I hung up with attitude. “Sisters.”
Serena slid the second plate toward me. “How many of you are there?”
I surprised her with a quick kiss. “That’s for later.” Then, I opened the meat lover’s box. “Me, three brothers, and two sisters. My other brother, Brett, is on deployment.”
“I think big families are a blessing. I’ve got one sister and four brothers.”
Nodding, I picked up a slice of pizza and took a bite. But I almost spit it out when Shania’s “Man! I feel like a woman!” started up again. Every time I changed it to a George Strait song, one of them changed it back. I answered, “Alice, I don’t have time to talk.”
“I wanna talk to her,” my bossy sister demanded.
“We don’t have time for you to talk to her.”
“What are you doing right this second?”
“Eating pizza before a work meeting. Everybody from the company is due here any minute.
“Ah… Sharing a meal is a good first step. Is she really a client?”
“Yes. And we don’t have time right now.”
Serena held out her hand. “I’ll talk to her.”
Against my better judgment, I handed over my phone. Then I bit into the pizza and wished it was crispy potato chips so I wouldn’t hear what was said about me.
“Hi, Alice,” Serena started. “No, it’s not a date. I am a client… Yeah, I heard him say that, and I think he’s good-looking too. Actually, your brother is the very definition of hot.” She smiled, doing her best to make me uncomfortable.
I turned away, feeling a blush coming on.
“No, he wasn’t fibbing. We do have a meeting coming up. I’ll tell you what, how about we talk later in the week, and you can tell me all his secrets? Let me give you my number.” After reciting her cell number, she added, “Good talking to you, too.”
After a few seconds of silence, I composed myself and turned around, advancing on her. “The very definition of hot?”
A blush crept into her cheeks as she backed against the fridge, still holding a piece of pizza. “Merely reporting the facts.”
I narrowed the distance between us. “Is that right?”
“Is pretty the best you could come up with?” she asked, raising an eyebrow.
“As I recall, I called you very pretty.” A few inches closer, and I’d be tearing her clothes off. “And a woman, not a girl.”
Her eyelashes fluttered as her cheeks grew redder. “You’re just being kind because I’m paying for your time.”
“How can you say that after…” I sighed. “I meant every word. Long ago, I promised my sisters I would never lie to them.”
She slid to the side and brought the pizza slice up between us. “Good to know there’s somebody you won’t lie to.”
The spell broke, and I backed away. “Giving Alice your number was not a wise choice. You know they’re both going to call you.”
She shrugged and ate her pizza. “You can thank me later. It keeps you from having to talk to them,” she mumbled through her food. “They know how to push your buttons.”
“That they do.” It seemed Serena was in that club as well.
The front motion alert sounded again. “That would be the crew. You better grab a second slice of whatever you want before I let the vultures in. I slapped her ass as I went to the door.
She yelped and stuck her tongue out at me before reaching for the veggie box. “You’re going to pay for that.”
“We’ll see. The way I see it, you have to pay for talking to Alice.”
She nodded. But she only knew half the story.
