Chapter Eighty-Two
Sage
I felt the bed shift behind me at the same time I noticed the sunlight brightening the loft around us.
I clenched my eyes shut, prepared for the swell of pain in my head and the nausea in my gut from a night spent drinking far too much, but it never came.
My brows furrowed and I rolled to lay on my back, saw Dean sitting up and smiling down at me.
“Good morning,” he whispered.
I smiled. “It’s a better one than I thought it’d be, why don’t I feel sick?”
He chuckled, lifting a hand to move my hair out of my face.
“It takes an excessive amount of alcohol to make a Kova drunk, even more to be hungover, and an obscene amount to make them forget the night before.”
I nodded, lifting on my arm to scoot closer to him when we heard the sound of a raven flying into the greenhouse. His eyes flashed with worry as I knew he recalled the last time a raven flew bad news in, and he ran for it. I followed, only a step behind.
He looked at the seal. “It’s from Neomaeros,” he said softly, unraveling it. A second piece of parchment started to slide free, but he caught it.
“We received this from Kembertus and sent it to you immediately,” he read aloud, then looked to the second scroll, and his face paled. “Kembertus is under attack. Please send urgent help.”
This wasn’t like the last time. We didn’t call a whole meeting, or wait for Kovarrin’s approval.
We ran to get dressed, we portaled to tell all the others. I thanked the Gods I still had my magic because if Kembertus was being attacked by Vasi, I was the only one here who knew how to construct a ward to keep them out.
All of us gathered again, the same as before, except this time, James came with. We’d already told Wyott, and he ran to tell Cora, to tell Kovarrin, but the rest of us split up into groups.
I looked to Evaline, dressed in her battle leathers. But this time, instead of the long linen shirts she normally wore beneath her corseted abdomen protection, her arms were bare below the capped sleeves of her corset.
I’d never been to Kembertus.
Her eyes were clouded with worry, but she nodded, and stepped forward, hand reaching for mine.
