ELIO

S tella fits perfectly in my arms…I just wish she wasn’t crying. Her distress shouldn’t bother me — this girl should be nothing to me, but seeing and hearing her cry wrecks me. I couldn’t just stand by.

Don’t tell me that I actually care about her? None of that matters right now.

“Stella,” I whisper softly into her ear, “tell me what’s wrong.”

She hesitates, her breath hitching between sobs, and I expect her to brush off my question. Apart from the obvious chemistry between us, it’s not like we really know each other. Sexting isn’t exactly about finding out someone’s favorite color. For a moment, I think she’s going to snap out of it and walk away from me without a word.

But instead, she looks up at me, her hazel eyes brimming with tears, and says in a broken voice, “It’s Owen… He was supposed to be paying for my brother’s care at a facility, before he left me, but I guess he figured it wasn’t worth it. And now I’m screwed because it costs more money than I have because I got a new apartment and maybe splurged too much, and…and I don’t know why I’m even telling you all of this, like you care.”

“Stella, I do care.” Why would you say that? Now, she’ll start thinking I have feelings for her or something dumb like that. Every time Stella tells me something, I feel more and more disappointed in my son. I feel responsible for the hole she’s in simply because my son doesn’t know how to be a man.

I’m not much of a relationship person myself, but I’d never leave a woman in such an easily avoidable situation.

“Stella,” I wipe a tear from her cheek, knowing I can fix this easily and then she won’t have to cry anymore. “I’m going to give you another check to cover Leo’s expenses. I won’t let him suffer because of my son’s selfishness.”

Her sobs subside slightly, and she looks up at me with tear-filled eyes. “Elio, I appreciate your concern, but I can’t accept money without earning it. It’s not right.”

I laugh. “Says the woman who tried to blackmail me the first time she met me.”

She looks at me, and even though she’s still crying and has a red nose, I don’t think she’s ever been more beautiful. “That was different! I earned that money taking care of Owen!”

The determination in her voice speaks volumes about her character – fiercely independent and unwilling to be seen as a charity case. I understand her reluctance, but the thought of leaving her in this situation is unbearable. An idea forms in my mind, one that will allow her to maintain her pride while accepting my help.

And if I get a little something out of this, that’s not horrible, right?

“Alright, Stella. Then let’s go back to the proposal I made and negotiate.” Her eyes narrow, but I keep talking. “One night together, here, in exchange for the money you need, and that way you would have earned it.”

For a moment, she seems taken aback, shock registering in her wide eyes. But then her gaze hardens, and she studies me intently, weighing the offer I’ve laid before her. I can see the wheels turning in her head. She stands up a little bit straighter and takes one small step away from me.

“Is that really what you want, Elio?” she asks, glaring at me. “Am I just a means to an end for you? I told you I can’t be bought.”

“Then don’t be,” I shrug. “But, I’m not going to stop pursuing you – not going to stop coming by until I’ve had you in my bed. I have this bad habit of getting everything I want, and I’m not willing to make an exception for you. So accept my money or don’t, but I’m going to get what I want, and what I want is you to be screaming my name as I slam into you from behind. You may as well use me too.”

I’ve never paid a woman to sleep with me before – why would I? Most of the time, I have them crawling all over me. But that kind of thing gets old. Stella is different. I know I don’t have to actually pay her to sleep with me. She melts every time I touch her, whether she wants to admit it or not. It wouldn’t take much longer to break her down, but if waving around my wallet will save me some time in courting her then so be it.

Besides, there’s nothing wrong with a woman having a little bit of a hero complex.

She hesitates for a moment longer, her eyes searching mine although I don’t have a clue what she’s looking for. I grab her chin and wipe away any leftover tears.

“Don’t look for a savior in me,” I tell her honestly, holding onto her tighter. “Just because I don’t like to see a woman cry doesn’t mean I’m suddenly a good man. This proposition is purely selfish because of my own desires. Don’t try to paint the picture differently. I’m not your knight in shining armor.”

I expect her to look shocked by my words, but this girl surprises me at every corner. Instead, she looks relieved.

“Nobody can find out.”

So, she’s agreeing?

“I’ll make sure of it.”

Stella bites her bottom lip, in thought, and it takes everything inside of me not to rip it from her teeth, so I can do it instead. “Okay.”

All of my waiting is paying off.

“Let me come for you after work,” I suggest.

She shakes her head, a hint of defiance igniting behind her eyes. “No, I’ll drive to your place instead. I’d rather maintain some semblance of control over this situation.”

“If it’s control you’re worried about baby girl, then you’re screwed.” I run the back of my finger down her cheek. “Literally and figuratively.”

My words make her shiver. I want to feel her do that more.

And I will. Tonight.

“I’ll send you my address,” I tell her.

“Okay.” She nods. “I should probably get back to work.”

“Probably.”

As she turns to leave, I watch her walk away, her hair swaying down her back and her ass nearly sticking out from underneath the skimpy clothes that she has on – the clothes I can’t wait to rip off of her.

“See you tonight,” I call after her.

“Tonight,” she echoes.
