Chapter Thirty-Six

Wreck

L ife with Shadow is everything I ever dreamed it could be and so much more. Waking up to him every day is the best feeling in the world; knowing I can touch and kiss him as much as I want and need is freeing. Just knowing he’s mine makes getting through the moments we can’t be together so much easier. I always know that at the end of the day, no matter what, he’ll be coming home to me. That’s another thing; living with Shadow is as easy as breathing; we already know each other so well, so there’s no adjustment period needed. No adjusting to each other’s quirks because we already know and accept everything about each other. I might not have moved all my stuff in yet, but that doesn’t matter. At the end of the day, it’s all just stuff; I can live without things. Shadow, on the other hand, I couldn’t live without him. Not now I know what it’s really like to have him.

As much as I want to continue living in our happy bubble, that’s not going to happen. Today it’s time to face not only Megan but the place I was held and tortured. It’s weird; part of me is worried about how I’ll react to being there, but at the same time I feel relaxed too because I know it’s finally time to say my piece and get some answers before finally putting all this behind me for good.

Shadow’s been extra clingy since the moment we woke up this morning, and I know it’s because he’s worried. It’s his way of showing he’s here for me and cares. I don’t think I’d be as okay as I am about all this if I didn’t know he’d be with me the whole time. I can face anything as long as he’s by my side.

Pulling the SUV into the Knightlye’s driveway, I immediately spot Jake waiting next to his bike. I look over at Shadow, and he gives me a reassuring smile before turning off the engine and hopping out of the car. I follow suit and meet him at the front of the SUV, where he’s waiting, holding his hand out for me to take. I grab his hand, and we walk towards Jake, hand in hand.

Jake smiles at our joined hands before looking up at both of our faces and asking, “Are you ready for this?”

“Yeah, I want to do this and then forget she ever existed.” I answer.

Shadow doesn’t say a word; he just squeezes my hand in support. I already know he feels exactly the same; he’s only here and willing to face her because of me. He’d happily never see her again.

Jake nods his head before leading us around the side of the main house towards the back, where I know The Khaos Group’s holding facility is. Getting my first look at the building from the outside, I feel nothing. I was expecting something after what I went through within those walls, but it’s just a building. Maybe I’ll have a different reaction once inside; after all, I never saw the outside when I was held here. Just the room Rex held me in.

Jake places his hand on the scanner located on the outside of the building, and we hear a click before he pulls the door open and gestures for us to enter. Standing inside are the two men I remember from when I woke up in the hospital. I think their names are Seth and Austin, but I could be mistaken. Also standing with them is Mrs Knightlye.

“Good morning, boys.” Mrs Knightlye says in greeting. “Megan has been moved to a standard interrogation room. For obvious reasons, I thought it was best after what you experienced Wreck.”

“Thank you for that.”

“You’re very welcome, dear. Now if you’ll both follow me, I’ll take you to her. Seth and Austin here will stay and watch from the viewing room just as a precaution, but I don’t see Megan trying anything. I don’t think she’s quite that stupid.”

“You’re not staying?” Shadow asks as we follow her down the hallway.

“No, I need to deal with Rex. Apparently it’s time for his mother to kick his ass and snap him out of this mood he’s been in since he found out what happened. Everything his brother’s have tried has failed epically.”

“Did Jake mention I had an idea to help?” I ask.

“Yes, he did mention that, but he didn’t have any specifics. Do you mind telling me what your plan is? In case it’s something I can use while talking to him.”

“Of course. I had the thought that Rex might need to do something to earn my forgiveness, even though, if I’m being honest, I don’t have anything to forgive. He was a victim in this just as much as me. Anyway, my plan is to ask Rex to find my missing younger brother. I have searched and followed every lead I could find and have nothing. I figured maybe by asking Rex to look, he might find something I missed but also feel like he’s earned my forgiveness in the process.”

Mrs Knightlye stops walking and turns to face me. “You are something else, Wreck. Many men in your position would blame my son just as much as Megan, but not you. Not only do you see the cold, hard truth about what really happened, you want to help him too. I like your plan, and if it’s okay with you, I’m going to mention it when I speak to him.”

“That’s fine with me. If he chooses to follow through with finding Dre, I can meet with him in a few days and hand over everything I have.”

“We will meet with him,” Shadow says, interrupting me.

“Yes, we will.” I say, agreeing with him.

“Thank you both.” She says before carrying on walking.

At the end of the corridor, Mrs Knightlye stops outside of an unmarked door before saying, “We’re here.”

It’s time for me to face the woman who nearly cost me my life. It’s time for me to say what I need to and then forget she ever existed. She’s about to become a thing of the past, just a cautionary tale for all Devil’s Inferno members when picking a partner in the future. Other than that, she’ll become nothing to any of us. She’ll be left in the past and forgotten. Just like she deserves.
