Chapter 17

Ryan

I’m in a deep sleep in Blaze's bed when my phone rings. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I glance at the clock and it's 6:50 p.m. A shock washes over me when I see who's calling. Clicking answer, I bring the phone up to my ear.

“Hey, I need you to come get me asap.” Layla says hurriedly.

“Umm…Hi? You might need me to, but that doesn’t mean I have to.” I let out a scoff, because who does my step-sister think she is?

“Cut the shit and come get me. It's urgent. I'm at the diner across town. Okay? Thanks. Bye. The phone clicks and I'm dumbfounded. Blaze sits up next to me.

“Layla just told me to come get her at the diner across town,” I murmur as I turn to look at Blaze.

“Well, thank God there's only one diner around for miles…So, how are you getting her? You're here without your car...” Blaze says with his eyebrows raised, but freezes when he sees me giving him puppy dog eyes.

“Not…no. FUCK NO! Ry, I told you I don't want to be around that crazy bitch.”

“But if you don't take me, you'll have to take me back to the house and then I'll be forced to go alone…” I start. Blaze sighs loudly, scratching the back of his head.

“Fine...but, only because I don't trust her or your dad alone with you,” he says, but I already knew that.

“Is that because you don't want her to taste my pussy?” I tease. I probably shouldn’t at the moment, but I can't help myself. It's part of my natural instinct. Blaze crawls toward me.

“Baby, I don't want no one looking at you, much less tasting a single inch of you.”

“You shared me with Aaron,” I say, raising an eyebrow.

“That was an exception. Aaron has a great ass.” Blaze shrugs. He smirks and tackles me to the bed, covering his body with mine. While looking into his hazel eyes and thinking about how thankful I am for him, I press my mouth to his. Our kiss grows urgent before I snap out of it and push him back.

“We have to go! Layla said it was urgent.”

“Let's get this over with then.” Blaze looks at me and smiles.

The waitress tells us to sit anywhere, but I spot Layla's dark hair, sitting in the back corner booth by the window. Me and Blaze walk to the back and sit in the booth, facing her.

The first thing I notice is her eyes are dark. Not the instant black they were the other night, but pretty close. The hair on my arm raises and I get chill bumps everywhere. Something’s not right. Blaze lets out an awkward cough.

“So? What's so urgent you needed us to come get you?” I snark. Looking my step-sister over, a wide smirk slowly spreads across her face.

“Technically, sis,” she says putting her fingers into air quotes at the last word. “I asked you to come get me. Not you and your—” she looks at Blaze and scowls, “pet dog.”

I feel Blaze tense up and I squeeze his knee under the table to calm him down.“How about instead of being an ungrateful bitch, be happy we’re here. Now, tell us what the fuck is going on,” I growl.

“Tsk tsk…” Layla clicks her tongue. “Let's just go, shall we ?” Layla wink as she gets up from the booth and walks out. Blaze and I look at each other in confusion.

Layla is standing next to the front, passenger door of the Jeep waiting for Blaze to unlock it.

“Oh, hell fucking no! There's no way you're getting my seat.” I stand in front of her and bump her out of the way. Before I can get into the vehicle, I feel a sharp pain in the back of my head as Layla jerks it back. Her soft lips are pressed against my ear.

“Be careful, sis. I am not going to put up with this shit.” My step-sister growls. I snap out of it when I hear a door being shut. Scrambling into the front seat, Blaze squeezes my hand.

“Are you okay?”

“Take me home, please.”

I hear Layla giggle from the back and anger forms in the pit of my stomach. The more I think about her actions lately, the angrier I get. I need answers and come hell or high water, I'm going to get them…tonight.
