Chapter Eleven

Over the next several hours, he plowed snow while Christmas carols played over the tractor speakers. He never envisioned being a farmer, but with a setup as nice as this John Deer, he wouldn’t mind working long hours on the land. Seth was sure that was a na?ve view of the job, but he was enjoying his part in helping Mack get the farm and village ready for guests. The crisp air, the hum of the engine, the sight of freshly cleared paths—it all felt strangely satisfying.

It was almost 2:00 pm when he made the final pass down the small private road leading through the forest to the village’s designated parking area in an empty field. Shutting down the tractor, Seth hopped down, his feet crunching in the snow, feeling a twinge of pride at what they had accomplished so far. He went in search of Mack, eager to see how she was doing. The sight of a registration sign hammered into the frozen ground outside the first building, Cocoa’s Café, caught his eye. Peeking inside, he found a nicely decorated space with a large table littered with papers, pens, name tags, and a coffee and hot chocolate bar, but the room was empty.

He moved on to the next building down the boardwalk, sandwiched between two fake facades, and stepped inside Jolly she ain’t foolin’ me,” Mack burst out laughing.

“You did not just play “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” by Kenney Chesney!”

Seth turned his most charming grin on her but didn’t reply.

“It’s not even your tractor, you goof.”

“Exactly! When else will I be able to play this song to get the attention of a smoking hot girl?” Seth replied with a wink.

“Just drive, Romeo. You’ve got over half a million dollars’ worth of machinery under your control. My daddy and brothers will not take kindly to you wrecking it... or me,” Mack ordered, though her smile gave her away.

“Admit it. It worked. You’re thinking about it now, aren’t you,” Seth flirted, wiggling his eyebrows at her suggestively.

“Thinking about what exactly?” Mack asked with an arched brow.

“You tell me…”

Mack pushed his grinning face back toward the windshield. “I’m thinking about work! Pull around the back of the barn. I’ll go open the doors. Back in if you think you can handle that, Farmer Seth.”

As she hopped down into the snow, Seth watched her go, a smirk still on his lips. This playful back-and-forth was becoming second nature between them. But as he shifted the tractor into gear, a thought crossed his mind—this was more than just a holiday flirtation.
