Epilogue.

Warden

A fter the chaos of the graveyard, I ordered everyone back to the clubhouse and stayed to help fill the grave back in. Spice stayed while he sent the other two Old Timers back to the club.

“Why?” I asked as I wiped my brow.

“Because we lost the fun, kid. Iona and Rosalea were right, and we stopped celebrating holidays. This was a way of bringing fun back to the club and reminding everyone we used to have a good time,” Spice replied.

“Spice, you frightened half the club to death. Noble will never be the same. He certainly won’t be doing any body runs for a while,” I replied.

“That’s fine. But give it a day or two, and you’ll all be laughing and teasing the shit out of one another,” Spice retorted.

“They’re gonna get you back,” I warned.

“Great, I look forward to it. But this is a Halloween they’ll not forget.”

“Spice…”

“Listen, kid. You run the club well. Yeah, we’re one-percenters, and we’re into illegal stuff. We own the cops and the mayor. But we don’t do bad or evil. We’re dirty and hard, and when we need to, we take the trash out.

“But who says we can’t have fun while doing that? The club looks after its own, but we lost the joy of laughter along the way. The club can be more positive. Doom and gloom will find us on its own.

“The dark side of life will always be with us. But are you telling me Iona hasn’t brought beauty to your life? She has, and we all know it. That’s my wish for all of you. But if you don’t start remembering the good times, then darkness will blot your future.

“We needed to lighten up a little, and tonight helped. Lindy’s Thanksgiving meal and Iona’s Christmas will bring some light back into our lives. Let the old ladies do what they need to, and let happiness into our dark nights.”

I thought about Spice’s words. Damn, Spice was right. We had our cookouts and got together at the bar, but the talk was of club life and there wasn’t fun. Our lives were serious and controlled, and I sensed things were going to take a turn for the worse.

We were going to fight McKay and the Screaming Barons. And my family would need to let steam off.

I nodded at Spice as we finished filling the hole in.

“There’s a buffet at the clubhouse. Lindy organised it and a keg,” Spice said.

“Lead on, brother, I’ve well and truly earned a beer tonight,” I replied.

“You were the only one who remained calm. I was a bit disappointed,” Spice admitted.

“There’s always next year!” I offered as a balm.

Spice grinned. “There certainly is.”
