CHAPTER 33

SPIKE

“Welcome home!”

I grin as Ivory and I step off the elevator and are greeted by shouts of excitement from my family.

Our family.

“I wanna see Jack,” Skye announces, walking in our direction. She has her arms extended and is making cooing noises. “Gimme that baby.”

Ivory hands her the carrier gently, careful not to wake Jack. He slept the entire way home from the hospital, and if I remember correctly from when Harper, Soul and Cece’s daughter, was an infant, sleep doesn’t always come so easily.

“We’re so glad you’re home,” Soul says, slapping me on the back. “And we’re thrilled to have you here, too,” he tells Ivory.

“Thanks. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be,” she replies. Then her gaze wanders as if she’s looking for someone. “Where is she?”

No clarification is needed. “She’s in the Confessional,” I tell her. “Why don’t you and Jack get sett?—”

“Take me to her,” Ivory demands.

“Are you sure?” Soul asks. “Nothing has to be done right away.”

“I need to know that that bitch is dead before I touch my son again. I need to know that she can’t taint our lives with her evilness.” She takes a deep breath. “So… Take me to her. Now.”

Soul and I exchange a look, and then I lead her across the room and onto the second elevator that only goes down.

“This isn’t gonna be pretty,” I warn.

“Not looking for pretty, Spike. I’m looking for complete obliteration.”

When we step into the hallway just outside the Confessional, I link my fingers through hers and force her to face me.

“Ivory, once you take a person’s life, there’s no going back. That’s not something that can be undone, so I need you to be sure this is what you want. Because if you’re not, I can handle it on my own.”

She takes a deep breath, rage entering her brown eyes. “I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.”

“Anything?” I tease, tilting her chin up.

“Anything other than loving you and Jack,” she clarifies sweetly.

“Okay, then. Let’s do this.”

Ivory hesitates for a moment when the door to the Confessional opens, but she quickly squares her shoulders and strides inside. I follow.

“Oh, Spike, I’m glad you’re home.”

I see Glitter’s still delusional.

“What’s wrong, bitch?” Ivory snaps. “You sound a little weak.”

Glitter is hanging from chains connected to the ceiling. The tips of her toes barely touch the floor, and she’s emaciated. My brothers did a great job keeping her just at the brink between life and death.

“Who’re you?” Glitter asks, glaring at Ivory.

I can’t tell if she really doesn’t know or if she’s faking it, but I’ll play her game if she wants. Unfortunately, Ivory doesn’t give me the chance to play.

“I’m the woman you tried to kill. Remember cutting open my stomach, pulling my baby from my belly, and leaving me to die tied to my kitchen table? Do you really envy me that much?”

Glitter’s eyes light up. “Oh, yeah. I seem to recall something like that. And I wouldn’t call how I feel about you envy . It’s more like an intense hatred because you tried to take what’s mine.”

Close enough.

“Did Spike give you the good news?” Ivory asks as she stalks toward the wall of weapons.

“Good news?”

Ivory lifts a serrated knife from the hooks it rests on and turns back toward Glitter. “Yeah. The news that Jack survived.”

“Jack?”

“Our son,” I clarify.

“My baby lived?” she counters.

Ivory snaps, lunging forward and thrusting the knife into Glitter’s side. “He’s not your son,” she snarls.

Glitter howls in pain, and her eyes flutter as she fights unconsciousness. “I-is that a-all ya got?”

“Don’t tempt her,” I warn.

“Just kill me, and get it over with,” Glitter says, her voice barely loud enough to hear.

“Oh, don’t you worry,” Ivory says, flipping the knife over in her hand. “You’re gonna die. But first, you’re gonna suffer.”

“Do I get a turn?” I ask hopefully before she can deliver another stab.

Ivory shrugs. “Sure.”

I grab one of several railroad spikes off the wall, grinning with anticipation. When I turn back around to face Glitter, satisfaction rolls through me at her look of fear.

Finally, she gets it.

“Damn.” Ivory whistles. “And here I thought the knife was bad.”

Waving the spike in front of my face, I take in the rust covering the surface. “I find that old and dull works best for maximum pain.”

Without warning, I take two strides forward and jab the spike into Glitter’s thigh. Her mouth drops open, but no scream erupts as she passes out.

“Well, shit,” Ivory grumbles. “I wanted to do more.”

“She’s not dead, babe,” I assure her. “You can still have some fun.”

“Oh, goody.” Her tone gives way to the giddiness she’s feeling. “Any suggestions?”

“Try to avoid major arteries if you want her alive longer.”

“Right.”

Ivory walks in circles around a dangling Glitter for several long minutes. And then… BAM!

She delivers stab after stab after stab. Blood pours from each and every wound, slowly draining Glitter of her life force. I lose track of how many injuries Ivory inflicts, but that doesn’t stop the pride from welling inside of me.

She’s the one. No doubt about it.

Eventually, Ivory tires out and stumbles into my chest.

“I’m done,” she announces, her voice drowsy. “You finish her off.”

“With pleasure.”

I don’t let go of Ivory as I grip the spike in my hand and thrust it into Glitter’s jugular. A few minutes later, the bleeding stops.

“Go forth, sinners' souls, from this world. May you suffer in darkness, may your home be in Hell, and may the Devil fuck you with his horns.”

Ivory tips her head up to look at me. “What was that?”

“Just something we say when we purge something.”

“Can I say it?”

“Absolutely.”

I begin again, and Ivory repeats my words.

“...Devil fuck you with his horns.”

“I love you,” I say, spinning her around so I can lift her into my arms.

Ivory wraps her legs around my waist and kisses me passionately.

“I love you, too,” she says once the kiss ends. “Now, take me upstairs so I can shower and feed Jack.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Oooh, I think I like the sound of that.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.”
