Chapter Twelve
Heidi
M rs Bloater was sighing and blowing her breath out through a tiny hole in her mouth where her lips were pursed. Heidi thought there was more time but baby Bloater was on her way. It was supposed to be a check-up when Mrs Bloater waddled into the surgery but soon it was wailing and crying. They ushered her into the small room that was for emergency deliveries and called for the doctor. Heidi had helped birth numerous babies but none of them were six and a half months into the pregnancy.
“It’s all right, Mrs Bloater, we’ll get your baby out into the world. Try to relax.”
She received the usual glare whenever she uttered those words and tried not to laugh. The other nurse gave Mrs Bloater gas and air while Heidi assessed that the baby was coming but it would be a little while yet. The doctor was on his way and would arrive well before the baby would come.
She left Mrs Bloater in the capable hands of the nurse and went to the break room to grab a coffee. She thought she’d be in for a long day and possibly a long night waiting for the birth. She took her maternity duties seriously and as soon as she had a new mum come to her with news of pregnancy she was mother hen from that point on. All of her mums were taken care of. Living on a small island she was able to assist in all the births since she graduated from midwifery school.
She slouched in the chair. It had already been a day. Mrs Bloater’s appointment was at three o’clock and she was due to finish her shift at four. But looking at the clock it was already five. Freya chose that moment to come into the break room carrying her school bag.
“You ready?” Freya asked.
“Sadly not. Mrs Bloater has gone into labour. I’m going to have to skip movie night.”
“Oh, that’s all right. It’s babies. Everything can wait for babies,” Freya said taking Heidi’s mug and taking a sip.
“Thanks, babe. Not sure what time I’ll get in.”
Freya took a seat, knowing full well what Heidi was saying. They hadn’t had time to talk about her date with Jason a few nights ago and Freya had postponed the chat until movie night so they were relaxed in PJs and had popcorn.
“We can talk now. Did the date go okay?”
“It did.”
“Did he kiss you goodnight or good morning?”
“He kissed me goodnight after he gave me an orgasm in the flower fields.”
“Wow. Progress. Did you talk about why you guys broke up? Did he tell you why he dumped you?”
“No, and I didn’t ask. I didn’t want to break the spell we had.”
“I get that, babe, but you’re going to have to ask him if you have any chance of a relationship now.”
“What if he’s not staying and is only here to set up the wedding business and then goes off who knows where again? I don’t think my heart will take it twice.”
“You need to talk to him and soon. The sooner you get it out in the open the better so you don’t fall for him again.”
“It may be a little too late for that. I can’t stop thinking about him.”
“Talk to him. If he says its casual and short term, let me know. I’ll kick his arse and make you a martini.”
Heidi smiled and grabbed her best friend’s hand.
“I think I’ll need a few if he’s looking for casual.”
Freya didn’t say the words again. She kept hold of Heidi’s hand and kept on drinking her coffee. After a while when the mug was empty, she put it down on the table and looked towards the coffee pot.
“I can wait if you want. I can mark books while you perform miracles,” Freya said.
“Help yourself. The doctor had just arrived.”
“Go, do good things. I’ll wait.”
Heidi got up and kissed her friend on the top of her head and went to the delivery room at the end of the corridor.
