Chapter forty-seven

Raven

“ R aven. You have to channel your inner feelings.” Frankie adjusts her sweater and cocks out a hip. “A lot of your power is influenced by your emotions, which can be either good or bad.”

I cross my arms. We’d been out at the back of Locke’s property since this morning. Training. It was now nearing seven o’clock. Nothing has caught a flame. Nothing has lifted from its position, hovering in the air like in the movies. I haven’t even turned a random squirrel into prince charming.

“I’m a terrible witch,” I admit.

“With that attitude you will be.” She takes a step to me with a sigh.

“I figured this was the best time to tell you.”

A steady grin spreads over her face.

She stops in front of me. “You should know. I’ve slept with Locke.”

I drop my arms, my fist clenching. “Excuse me?”

“It was a year or so ago.” She tilts her head. “But I sure haven’t forgot.”

Fury licks up my spine. Of course she has. That’s why they’re so familiar.

“Those big hands.” She tilts her head the other way. “I can still practically feel the way his…”

“Stop,” I say, my voice low.

“Why? It’s just girl talk.” She shrugs. “Tell me I’m not right? He fucks hard.”

“Stop it!” I scream just as my arms push out to shove at her chest.

She steps away and I stumble forward, my hands balling tight. My neck burns. My heart aches.

“Let it out,” Frankie says. “Let it go, Raven.”

I stand up straight and scream. My lungs vibrating with rage. The rage of her having him. The rage of being lied to by my family. The truth of what I am. My lungs clench from the scream and when I stop, a circle of fire forms around Frankie. My eyes widen and I back up on instinct.

“Shit! Frankie!” I gasp.

The look on her face isn’t of fear, it’s of pride.

“Good.” She stands casually in the middle of the flames. “Now put it out.”

“What do you mean?” I reach up and tug at my roots. “I don’t have water!”

Panic soars, but she calmly lifts a hand. “Use your mind.”

I close my eyes and let the words stampede across my brain. Put it out. Put it out.

“Raven.”

I crack open an eye.

She stands on the dirt. No fire.

“Fucking hell,” I gasp. “What the….”

Frankie laughs. Full on laughs. “Told you. Anger.”

I glare at her and tug off my hoodie. I’m sweating profusely now.

“Oh, and Raven.” She lifts a brow. “Just so we’re clear. I’ve never slept with Locke. I just needed you pissed.”

“Well, you succeeded, “I deadpan. “I could have burned down the entire forest.”

She runs her fingers through her short strands. “Honestly the best way to practice is in the real world.”

“The real world?” I fan my face.

Why am I so damn hot? It’s fifty degrees outside.

“Yeah.” She shrugs. “My bar.”

“You own a bar?”

“The Brew House.”

I know I’ve heard Locke mention the place before. “Are you sure?”

“Absolutely. You put that fire out in record time. That’s excellent for a beginner. But you're strong, Raven. You got this.”

“Ok. You’re the teacher.”

She tosses an arm over my shoulder. “I think we’ll get along just fine.”

With my head spinning we walk back to the house, and I’m not even remotely prepared for what we walk into.
